Cathunter, thanks a million for pointing this out. Genius Loci, thanks a million for your your wonderful logs!

I guess I should have poked around first… this article about a bird launced earlier last year indicates that the mission cost was approx $90MM including the bird. Extrapolating…the answer to my question is likely that $45MM is the actual cost of the satellite. Yikes!

I’ve created queries destined for both roadrunner and non-roadrunner accounts. I’m having extremely poor success rates. (I’ve received only one loc file over the past two weeks). I tend to agree this is most likely a resource issue and I share your frustration with the lack of communication from Groundspeak.

Congratulations! Any hints about which park you’re working on?

    Cathunter,

Thanks for your thoughts. They’re in line with where I’m at but I wanted to see if there are other opinions that I haven’t yet considered before I snatch a TB or two and help them to a warmer climate.

    Ray & Helen,

Although we’ve not met, my family has enjoyed your caches in the Manitowoc area. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your loss.

    Peace,

Just read both articles (2001 and 2003). Both do a nice job introducing the sport and the interviewees. Great job to all who were interviewed.

I’ve also got to log a strong agreement with CacheCows on the friendly and civil nature of the discussion boards here as opposed to the geocaching.com boards. I’m a veteran BBSer and participate in about a dozen Yahoo discussion groups and have survived quite a few Usenet flame wars and I haven’t found many places friendlier or easier than right here. Thanks everyone!

PS…if anyone plants a cache in one of the Wilderness shores areas, please let me know and I’ll get the web page changed to add Geocaching as one of the activities that can be enjoyed there and provide a link to wi-geocaching.com and/or the specific cache page on geocaching.com.

    Dear Johnny U Boat,

Having read the other responses to your question I wanted to share a different perspective. I work for We Energies and we have a resource you may wish to consider. Good luck, lots of DAM neat places to visit out there!

I like the way you think. It had been a while since I’ve been in the area so I was surprised to see all the emergency sirens when we went to Point Beach State Forest for some biking and hiking last month. I’m sure the sirens have been there for many years…I just didn’t remember them.

No we didn’t get down to the far south end of the forest to seek “The Gang’s All Here”.

Last time I was at “the beach” it was for a tour of the storage pool and reactor 1 during a refueling outage. The hair on the back of my neck stood up the whole time I was inside the containment vessel. I’ll never forget the electric blueish color of the pool…

in reply to: Dangerous caches? #1745570

Personally, I’d try to contact the cache hider via email. It is possible that conditions have changed since the cache was first placed. It is also possible that the hider took a different route in and didn’t encounter the dangers you found. It is also possible the hider didn’t consider them to be as dangerous as you. Of course it is also possible the cache hider is out to get us…

    Hey Steve,

Wake up and pay attention where you’re posting! You should have put the battery thing in the “General” board, not the “picnic” board!

OK Steve, I’ll go move it now. Thanks for bringing the goof to my attention.

    Dear beast,

Thanks for your efforts in this area. It is neat to see mentions of progress and “milestones”. I’m not sure how you do your daily updates but just in case you’re not aware, I wanted to point out a potentially helpful feature:
    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?ul=the%20lil%20otter

    or
    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?ul=jthorson

or any other user name can be used on the Geocaching.com site to bring up that user’s log. Near the top is the text “Total Records:” followed by the number of logged “found” caches for that user. An enterprising individual could make a web page with a link for each of the Wisconsin cachers with a significant number of finds and quickly click through the links to see each cacher’s total. A smarter individual (don’t look to me) would write a perl or javascript to do it and capture the results then you could import them into your Excel spreadsheet directly. It is also possible that the results could be read directly into Excel using MS Visual Basic for Applications. This is the kind of stuff I used to do for fun before I bought a house and had kids 😉

Of course, too much automation would take away your ability to actually read the logs and keep track of things…not necessarily a good thing.

    Thanks again,
    Steve K

in reply to: Entrance coordinates? #1741874

As a penalty post, here are two “must visit” coordinates near Devils’ Lake:

    N43 21.939 W89 37.264 – Merrimac Ferry

    N43 24.856 W89 38.240 – Parfrey’s Glen

If you take the Ferry, the park entrance closest to the south shore picnic area is at N43 24.553 W89 40.498 where State Hy 113 meets South Lake Road.

Sincere apologies for not reading well enough the first time.
