It would be nice if people would log in a find period! I archived a few caches thinking there was no action, only to get home and read the book and find there were at least double, sometimes triple the amount of people going to it than shows on-line. I dont get it… people must be going to the site to get the stats of the caches to begin with… why not log in the find. Unless they want to stay incognito when they do something stupid to the cache or items therein.
I think you could maybe add another on your list. More and more younger geocachers are popping up. I have tried to make some simple enough for the younger generation to find without too much difficulty so they do not lose that enthusiam and want to find more… which they build up to the harder ones. I have met up with some people with the under 10 age along and it is so cool to see that enthusiam on thier face when they find the cache and open it up to see the treasures inside! I go for the hike, to try and lose some weight… I also for the hunt, the intrigue, how different some caches can be. I have also helped my nieces hide “easy” caches, for the young people, the new to the sport, and nice hikes along with it. Not everyone wants a hard find. I have a grandson on the way, some day I hope to introduce him to geocaching and hope there is “easy” finds for him to build his enjoyment to the sport.
Here is another site worth checking out: http://www.americanhiking.org
Found out that there is a big difference in GPS’s! I picked up a Magellan GPS300. it only has two numbers after the period on both lat and long… and goes to zero after .01…. not much good when you need to go into feet. Oh well… guess it was a learning lesson. Gets me close, just have to use more brains… I can use it for other things and save up for one that works the way I want to.
Yayy… I went against my previous statement and went back to Ebay… even though I got ripped off twice form them… tried again. Sat and watched the bids, placed one just minutes before it finished and snagged a GPS. It is an older model, but still have one to go out on my own now! Now I just have to wait for it to come in the mail! Woo Hoo!
I agree. I seem to be having the same track record… but, fortunately I only have two out there and my husband has one. One said he was taking it to a big event… said this 2 months ago and still waiting! The other one my husband had suggested to put Ireland as a destination since he is a leprechaun. Well, someone took him to Holland and he moved a bit in the beginning, now has been sitting. Yesterday I get a notification that he moved… woo hoo… I get to the bug site and the person logged that they found him. Then logged that they put him back in the same cache! I dont understand that one! I guess TB’s are the same as caches… ya gotta roll with the punches because there are jerks out there that dont abide by rules and dont care! Still waiting for my husband’s to move also… I sent a note to the person and received no reply.
Another one that irritated me was that we put someone else’s TB that wanted to go to Germany at a cache next to the EAA fly in figuring they would most likely take it there. Someone pulls it out a week before the fly in and says he is going to put it at a Chicago airport cache and it would most likely go off to Germany. Well, that person still hasnt placed the bug and I looked at the Osh Stash… and there were lots of people there during the fly in.
We have fun doing it… unless it is a stinker of a day and you go to a few caches and never find any of them. I find when you get some sleep, some food, and new bearings you can head out the next day and find it…. sometimes it takes a little begging to the owner of the cache also!
But, I mean physically… Sheesh… bushwhacking on some of these really can take alot out of ya! And we go with our dog alot of the time and the heat gets to her or you have to take more water for her. I try to find some easy ones, but then feel like I am taking the easy road and need more “adventure”. Then I think… am I wasting my weekend… so much to be done at home… like cooking, cleaning, washing… yuck! Would rather be GeoCaching!! (RPaske… you crack me up! You remind me of my husband and too many electronic gadgets to play with!)
Guess I just have to hang in there and some day I can hack it like the rest of youse. BTW… anyone lose weight caching? I have been trying to use the hiking to caches as a way of exercise… seems to work.
Are you a paid member? I wonder if that would make a difference… maybe I have to become an actual member to get better connection (service?)… I even tried at work (shhhhh!) and I have the same problem there. I was able to send an email to [email protected]… but no one else.
I went to the location you said to check the explanation… but, he says… all fixed. No, dont think so, still having problems this morning. Cant log on, once I finally log in I cant change to a different page, still cant send email through system. This is becoming very frustrating.
The cache is not actually in the park persay… it is behind the park. It appears to be an abandoned farm or something like that. We went out twice to find the cache. First time we just encountered the trashed cars and tires. The second time was when we got caught with the barbed wire. We were glad that our dog tried to start a fight the day before with another dog and this day we left her at home. All I was curious about was should something be said if a cache is too dangerous. I have put a few caches one more dangerous we pulled it. Now we found out another has bees by it. Guess you just cant win and have to play the game as is! I went out last weekend to place a cache, my husband stepped on a ground hive and I got the bees chasing me. My legs look like a dot to dot with all the stings… thank goodness I am not allergic! Anyway… we backed out of that area and walked away with the cache in hand.
So, to answer your first question… no, I am not a soccer mom… my kids hated it. I do not drive a Volvo… a CRX is more my fancy. Helmets and pads? Naw… only if they wanted to… my daughter thought they looked cool… but that was when she was in grade school… she is now in the ARMY and wear all sorts of gear and does all sorts of things.
I dont think my question warranted such anger. The cache I am referring to takes you into an area that is loaded with rusting out cars, tons of old rotted tires, broken whiskey bottles, abandoned antifreeze bottles and barbed wire hidden in the tall grass. No, I didnt make my kids wear elbow pads… my one daughter is proud to be a soldier btw. I just think there should be more description in the context so you can make a choice before getting out there, especially if you have kids and/or pets along.
Tetanus! Thanks for the reminder… I have to get that taken care of! They should offer a discount to Geocachers!!
Well, we did sort of do that. It wasnt the terrain or the difficulty of the hunt that bothered me. It was walking through rusted out abandoned cars, tires, trucks, whiskey bottles, antifreeze bottles broken beer bottles… that sort of stuff that turned us away. It was in a dog park and tells you to bring your dog along. Well, when we ran across the hidden barbed wired in the brush I am glad my dog was at home… although my husband got the brunt of the wire! Fortunately it was only his pants that got ripped. I agree… not all should be kid-friendly… but, I think this one goes a little beyond where a cache should be placed… or at least a little warning that you are going to be traveling through a car cemetary where drunks hang out.
If you watch the cache real good, monitor logs, and check on the box itself once in awhile… I dont see why you couldnt do that. Make sure and advertise that you have that in there… like on the message boards. I am sure you will have a ton of people coming out for them… although I dont know why anyone would want to watch the Vikings unless it was to watch the Packers beat them!
I sent a message to you last night about the coordinates and replied to Dale’s message today. I did send it to the address you sent to Team Dew.
