Team Sloughfoot would be disabling caches if we had any way to check on them. Our caches in the Portage area are for the most part underwater or unapproachable due to road closures. Our cottage between Portage and the Dells is flooded, again. 2nd time in 4 years. The floor is ripped up in the lower level and all the furniture is in the garage. Sorry to anyone who makes a wasted trip to one of our caches but we are too busy with water issues and elderly mother rescues to do the computer work . Pray for a drought. 😥

what a cutie!! He looks like a real asset to the team. No more looking like a lurker on those playground hides. Just a matter of time before he can crawl into all those tiny spaces and come up with the hootie.

in reply to: Do you use the WGA logo in your cache page? #1887104

I haven’t used it until now. I just used tyedyeskyguy’s code and it works great. I guess I haven’t put anything like this on my caches because it won’t show up on a Palm if you are doing paperless anyhow. But it looks cool if you are on the computer. I will probably add it from now on because I know how now. Thanks

Do you have to change your name now?

Does this leave Mrs Sloughfoot to carry the Miata banner by her self?

Mr Sloughfoot is a computer dinosaur having been in the business since April 1967, yes that really is 1967! I have always been on the hardware end of things including fixing the hardware, network wiring , installing fiber optic and all of the gizmos that hook it all together such as hubs, routers, switches, modems etc. I started working for Honeywell and even though they aren’t in the computer business anymore I have all 41 years of my seniority which doesn’t mean much other then bragging rights. We have been through 10 name changes in that time. Today I might be John from Dell , IBM, Apple (Yes Marc if you had bought the AppleCare program I would be your local support if that iMac broke), Sony or Canon at any particular time even though my paycheck doesn’t come from any of those companies. Honeywell sold a computer called the “Kitchen computer” through Nieman Marcus back in 1969. It was probably the first “home” computer ever. If they had ever sold any I would have worked on it because the computer down in the guts was a nice little 16 bit system that was sold by the thousands. I have supplied a link to an ad for it.

I have a lot of obsolete skills such as:
Being able to count in binary, octal, hexadecimal and ASCII
Hold a punch card up to the light and read the hollerith code.
I know what bits, bytes, nibbles, and words all are.
Program in Easycoder and GMAP ( and I know a macro is not a fish)
Use an oscilloscope. (can’t even spell it anymore)
Clean a drum storage unit. (a fore runner to the disk drive)
Scout out a computer room just by the hum of the fans.
World Traveler ( I have fixed computers in 9 countries)
I know why a floppy drive is called a floppy drive!
I can type the word “start” very fast.
I once spent a couple of days locked in a bunker while the
Middle East was at war and we thought we might be too.
I could order a beer in several languages before I quit drinking.

Mrs Sloughfoot worked for 20 years in the Library at Hortonville H.S. before retiring. She now volunteers at the Appleton Library.

in reply to: Decent deal or no deal at all? #1885000

We have had a 60CSx since 3/06 (bought it off of the Internet for $400) and added the City Nav N. America micro SD chip (from Garmin about $130 ) about 3 mo. ago. Part Number 010-10679-50.

We have been real impressed with the routing features. It doesn’t talk to you but beeps and displays in large letters exactly when a turn is coming up. It works just as well in the countryside as it does in the city. It also contains other things such as gas stations.

The only complaint that I can think of is how it affects the compass page. When I make my final approach to a cache I like to use the compass screen and it seems like the compass is always pointing at the next turn instead of the cache so when I get close to the final I will do another “find” and select “off road” to get the compass to point directly at the cache.

I have been in email contact with Garmin trying to solve this minor little problem but we haven’t come up with a setting that works . I would like the compass to always point at the final location rather then down the road. But I know how to get around the problem so now it’s not really a big deal.

The 60csx is a great unit and is also good on batteries and I would highly recommend it. Be a little careful buying the mapping CD’s off of ebay because there are some licensing issues that might make the CD useless. Also the chip used in the 60CSX is not a standard SD. It is a micro SD, max size of 2GB. The micro SD is only about 1/2″ square and you can’t buy them just anywhere. These issues are why I decided to buy the preloaded City Nav chip direct from Garmin.

    Happy hunting

in reply to: Lonely caches? #1882197

Team Sloughfoot will play the game. I’m not sure I will ever be able to figure out my score. I’m not smart enough to be a duck hunter any more because of all the rules and this seems to be quite complicated with a lot of manual intervention required by the owner. But lets go for it and see how it works.

Nice looking IMac. What’s the $20 bill for the start of your repair fund? or do you just give it a little money when you want it to go? Must be a bluetooth keyboard and mouse I don’t see any wires, cool.

in reply to: Brag a bit: What is your best cache? #1880710

It’s hard to pick a favorite when they are all special in their own way. The “Trail of the serpent” series is 29 caches long and it is fun to read the logs from cachers doing that series as they discover the special points of interest at each spot. Some have the view, some are historic and some are spots that we have discovered growing up along the Fox River.

We have several in the French Creek area in the triangle made up of Pardeeville, Portage and Montello. This is the area that Sloughfoot grew up in so they are all special in that they are an invitation to see the spots that me and my brothers and friends spent our time in. Going to these places will give you an idea about what I mean when I say “Its a Sloughfoot kind of place”

But the favorite of all would be GCW5R4 “French Creek Kelly’s Island.” This one has what Team Sloughfoot thinks caching is all about. It’s not particularly hard to get to but requires a .8 mi walk each way. It is on public land with a view to die for. WP1 gets you to the parking area and the final is an ammo can. There is a small water hazard which varies with the water level of the marsh and draws funny comments in the logs. To see what other cachers think about this cache go read the logs from PeaceB_W/U from Oct 24.2006 and Seekers8711 from Dec24,06

    Thanks for asking….Sloughfoot

exactly, the questions just keep coming. If everyone offered 10 questions to be considered you would have quite a list.

    Gail

Love the idea Bandits and I think I may have a way around the numbers stuff. For one of our class reunions (nevermind which one) we had a paper scavenger hunt.

What we came up with was a list of questions that we printed out on sheets. It asked questions of classmates so we all could learn about some of the life experiences we had had in the years since we left school.

This method would work as it would only involve the people able to attend the gathering, would not require a lot of searching for stats and could really bring out some good stories.

Some examples of questions could be: Who has the oldest vehicle used for caching. Have you ever had Lymes disease as a result of caching. Who has found the most caches in one 24 hr period. All these answers would be worth one point. Add em up, Make anyone who claims a point tell their story and 12 hours later you have a winner or winners. The questions are easy to come up with once you get going and are a lot of fun to think up. I think this would accomplish the goal of getting a group together and all sharing experiences.

    Mrs Sloughfoot.
