Oh, oh. Yellow, black, green, orange and gray. Where’s the red wire??
I had been posting caches in Superior and looking for new spots there since I work there (makes it easy to maintain them) and there aren’t a lot of them over there. I have a couple of new ones ready to go when I get a chance to drop them off.
Just remember, cut the red wire. It’s always the red wire.
Or was it the blue one…hmmmmm
Lets see…
rope….check
duct tape…check
flashlight…check
large vehicle…check
plastic bags…check
rubber boots…check
hatchet…checkI thought I accidentally went to the serial killer forum. 🙂
Seriously though, I wouldn’t have even bought a gps if a friend of mine hadn’t told me about this hobby/obsession. I couldn’t have justified the expense just to have it for hunting. I collect a lot of empty plastic jars and buy containers I would never have bought. I also have a list of wants that I wouldn’t have even been considered. I will be buying leg gaiters and snow shoes and I would never have had a need for them.
GC.com does give a free premium membership to law enforcement if they request it. I am in law enforcement and had that opportunity, but I paid for my membership on the principle of it (because I geocache). It’s a great service they provide. Clearly marking the container is the best remedy for this problem, but that’s the responsibility of each of us when we hide caches. An organization like this best serves it’s members by giving them a clear policy (with regards to marking caches) that is accessible to the public so everyone knows how you stand when one of these incidents happen. I would not publicly step out with any kind of a statement when one of these happens unless you want to be associated with it as an organization. No matter what you do there will be incidents. You are wrapping containers in camo of some kind and hiding them in public (rural and urban) places. How do you keep that from looking suspicious? The best you can do is make it as easy for law enforcement to identify it as a harmless object as quickly and safely as possible.
My 2 cents.
Here’s another great organization that’s extremely responsible with the money they’re given and they were also right there on the front line as quickly as they could get in Haiti.
I found some cool containers that are waterproof. You can get them in clear, colored or with a camo print already on them. Very cool and not too unreasonable in price.
I had the same question a little while ago so I e-mailed one of our experienced cache hiders. He told me it’s common to leave a $1 coin for the FTF prize so I’ve been buying the gold president dollars and even JFK half dollars when I can find them. Two dollar bills work great for small, log only caches too when you can find them. I found a couple big silver dollars but my kids wanted them so they never made it to a cache. No need to get too expensive or elaborate. It’s the bragging rights that people are after and the gift is a little bonus. I see the gifts getting regifted when people make a new cache so your gift will probably keep on giving.
I’m actually from Duluth but I work in Superior. I was just curious how many are from up here (originally or moved up for school and then fled afterward) since we’re kind of far north from most of you. Because Superior is so close to Duluth I would guess most people from there would be more active on the MnGCA site since you’re correct in Duluth being a lot more of an active geocaching area.
I ran and raced R/C cars and trucks for years. I always wanted to get a heli but they scare the bajeebers out of me. They are flying blades of death if you don’t know what you’re doing. I’ve also spent hours watching people on youtube crash their big investments on the first run. Very cool hobby and I am in awe of you guys who can actually fly those things.
I love the picture with the ducks silhouetted in the sky. Awesome. You should keep the high res versions to sell in the future. What camera do you use? I also loved how clear the picture of the girl was and how realistic the colors were. My cheap camera takes nice pictures but the colors aren’t as nice. Your pictures look like the person is standing in front of you.
There is a company up in northern WI called Shirts Unlimited. The owner, Tina Prior, does a fantastic job and has VERY reasonable prices on silk-screening and embroidery. She also does coffee mugs and other items you have on Cafepress. I have her phone number and info and can pass it along via pm if the board is interested. She has never charged me a set-up fee for embroidery and charges by the job, not by the stitch so it ends up a lot less expensive. She’s also very quick at getting orders done.
For the price I an afford to try them. I already used up my empty food jars and my kids don’t like trying to get the peanut butter out of a ziploc baggie. Good thing my wife doesn’t keep an inventory on her spices either. Shhhh, you didn’t hear that. 😉
P.S. Michael’s craft store has a ton of small containers that are meant for paint so they seal water tight. They’re a little pricey (about $1 each) but they have a pretty wide variety of small containers including ones about twice the size of a film canister to about half the size.
Sounds like a business expense for sure. Probably even tax deductible 😉
Doh! Oh well, that’s what I get for promoting a product before field testing. 🙂 Thanks for that heads-up. I’ll have to use them for lunch or find a dry place to hide them.
