Thanks for the nice words Rod – I’d better get some new stuff out for your next trek over to this part of the state. 😎

I tend to do most of my caching in the western part of WI and into MN, and have always enjoyed caches placed by zuma (esp. the YST caches over the years), Mutsley and Crew, Diehard, DB, mama kat (that Bjornson area is fabulous), knowschad, and many others. Depending on where Joe Cactus attends college this Fall, it may give us some opportunities to explore other parts of the state.

There are 15 new permanent caches placed in Interstate Park, most on the Silverbrook and Skyline trails. Also a couple down in the picnic area near the river. Hopefully they will provide a good tour of some of the lesser traveled areas of the park.

Many of the areas along the river and the bluffs are designated State Natural Areas. They are definitely worth hiking (even without caches on them) – some interesting terrain and some great scenic views.

I may get out there and place a couple more prior to the campout – the warm weather this weekend should go a long ways in clearing out all the snow! 😉

It’s great to see this is coming together. The WI State Park system is a real asset to our state, and this looks like another good way to get people out and exploring all the things the state parks have to offer.

I have a number of caches placed in Willow River SP and Kinnickinnic SP, with a few more coming soon for Interstate SP (in prep for the combined MN/WI Campout). I’ve had some very nice comments from geocachers from MN and WI saying how much they enjoyed visiting these parks, and that the geocaches were a nice way to help them explore the area.

I’m planning on placing a number of new permanent caches in the park prior to the event (once this snow, ice, and otherwise messy stuff clears out!). 😯 There are a few there now, but not many. There are also some other nice areas (including the Gandy Dancer Trail) nearby that might get some attention too. Will see how much time I get in April and early May. I believe scott543 will also be placing a few new caches in time for the joint event.

    Should be fun! 😮

in reply to: Bartrod reaches 2500 milestone #1956324

A big congrats on a great milestone bartrod! 😀 Looks like you picked a fine cache to make it on – fun stuff. Working on a few new caches on this side of the state for your next visit…… 8)

Thanks much!! The milestone cache (GC39CRK) was alot of fun and a good challenge. If you ever get over to the Cannon Falls, MN area, check out the Miesville Ravine Regional Park. Some fun hiking and great caching in the area. There are also a good number of caches on the Cannon Valley bike trail nearby and some fun kayak/canoe caches on the Cannon River.

I never expected to find 1000 caches, let alone 5000, so it’s been a real adventure. There have been so many cool places I’ve seen over the years, thanks to other geocachers out there finding them and putting a cache there.

Now it’s time to hide a few more. Gotta make sure Bartrod has something new to find the next time he’s over here visiting with his family. 🙂

in reply to: Kudos to our WI Reviewers #1954044

I heartily agree – our WI Reviewers are top-notch! Knowledgeable and helpful and very responsive. I recall more than one occasion where there was less than 10 minutes between submitting a new cache for review and getting it approved. 😮

Thanks for all you do – it’s appreciated!

Congrats on a great milestone Rod – well done! Looks like you picked a memorable cache to score the milestone. Always enjoy your logs when you visit the western part of the badger state – I’m sure there will be more visits soon. 😉 Keep having fun!

That’s amazing Brett – congratulations! I know a few of those finds have come in the western part of the state. 😉 You’ll have to come up and visit us again once the snow gets a bit more manageable.

    Well done!

Wow – a great milestone indeed – congrats Ralph! And, thanks for all those caches out there you place for us to find.

Can 20K be far off? 😉

Welcome to geocaching and the WGA! Nice to see new cachers in this neck of the woods. 🙂 I think you’ll find some nice places to explore in the Hudson area – also check out River Falls and New Richmond when you get the chance. Further east, Eau Claire and Menomonie offer up some great places to cache too.

Da Bloodhound and I will be hosting a geocaching intro session at the Hudson Hot Air Affair on Sat., Feb. 5th (probably around 10am at EP Rock Middle school). If you get a chance stop on by – we’d love to meet you and chat about geocaching.

Have fun! I think you’ll find geocaching a very rewarding experience.

in reply to: Waterfalls and winter? #1940544

Despite the significant snowfall up here (and there’s more coming today!), I think the caches around Willow River Falls north of Hudson should be ok. Like zuma mentions, most of them near the falls are in a beacon and the trails going to them are multi-use. (There are alot of xc ski trails too if you’re in the mood to ski, and they do a great job of grooming them.) There is a decent hill to go up and down, but it’s maintained pretty well in the winter. The falls are pretty in the winter – it’s a very different scene now versus July. 🙂

There’s also Cascase Falls in Osceola, but that’s another hour or so north of Hudson. There’s an EC there and a couple regulars. The steps going down to the falls there can be a bit slick this time of year.

    Have fun!

One good thing regarding the Vike’s game moving to Detroit was those of us in Vikingland got a chance to watch the Packers play on TV. Although, after watching the game, I’m not sure it was all that much of a good thing – yikes! 🙁 Looks like the craphas is now in Detroit – their roof looked pretty sturdy, however.

Qute a storm in the far western part of WI. I suppose we ended up with about 20″, but it’s hard to tell with all the wind we had. They closed I-94 from Hudson to Tomah last night at 6pm and was still closed this morning. (Probably open by now I imagine.) First time I recall that happening here.

Driveway is still drifted shut – until the plow lad gets here, I’m stuck shoveling steps and making cache containers. 😆 Those ground hides are gonna be pretty tough out here for awhile.

Oh yeah, and the Metrodome ceiling collapsed this morning about 5am too. Check the video on FOX – pretty amazing!
