In my opinion, you should have posted a DNF. The sole purpose of purple frowny faces is to alert other cachers and the owner that there may be a problem with the cache. If the area of the cache is blocked by a raging river, that’s a problem that I’d certainly like to know about before heading out after the cache myself. Your note may get the message across, but a DNF log is much more likely to get my attention.

I’d never thought about the liability issue. The little disclaimer on each cache page about hunting caches at your own risk may not cover situations such as this, I suppose. Maybe that’s another reason to have cachers email you first. That way, you could verify that no minors are going out on their own. Maybe you could even have us sign a waiver, somehow?? I don’t know… I just love the idea!!

Wow, that’s great. Thanks for your effort!

Add my name to the list of Legend users. The Legend is a feature-rich unit that has an affordable price (you should be able to find a new one for about $150 online). I really only have one complaint… it doesn’t have external antennae capabilities.
One other point: the cheapest prices will be found on eBay, but if you don’t buy from a regular store (some eBay sellers are regular stores, though) and get a store receipt, you may not be able to use Garmin’s warranty.

I love the idea of providing a canoe for cachers!!! I don’t have a canoe or a vehicle to transport one with, but love to canoe. I would certainly rush out to do a cache like that… and after finding the final, I’d undoubtedly spend the rest of the day paddling around!
Is there any way that the paddles and floatation devices could be locked up as well? Also, in an effort to prevent theft, you could make the multi very difficult… maybe even make us do a few other difficult caches before we can email you for the coordinates for this canoe cache (like wzbt’s six-pack idea).
I’m looking forward to learning what you decide to do.

Great topic!! I’ve wanted to hunt for benchmarks. The only thing that has kept me from doing so is that they are not all located on public land. What would be the best way to determine which are on private land and which are on public land??? Any general advice would be appreciated.

Though it’s true that there’s something to be said about inexpensiveness, quality and features may also be worth considering.
I strongly recommend Motorola radios. I have a pair of the t5950 radios and the sound quality is excellent. This model also has a built in weather radio… perfect for geocachers!! Though they are a little more expensive (about $65 a pair), having both FRS and GMRS capabilities plus the NOAA weather radio makes them a great choice.
