But I’ve seen caches on public lists like “My solved puzzles” lists.

Who cares besides you that you’ve solved these puzzles? Is this just an extension of the “I’ve solved the puzzle so now I feel compelled to post a note to the cache page so everyone knows how smart I am?”

    Am I missing something?

I made my bookmark list of solved puzzles public so that cache owners could see that I have solved the puzzle in hopes that it they may consider not archiving it prematurely (or at least I have a chance to hunt for the cache). IMO, too many puzzles come and go too quickly. As a puzzle owner I have no problem with people posting bookmarks that they have solved it or notes that they have solved it, at least then I know someone has been looking at it.

I also keep a public bookmark in the same fashion of puzzles that have me stumped, again so that the cache owner can see that I have been working on it. I also keep a bookmark list of all my unsolved puzzles in Green Bay & Appleton (and Grand Rapids, MI), but I do keep that one private since I haven’t actually looked at the puzzles yet.

in reply to: GC.com email notifications? #1901476

I got this notice from the geocaching.com announcements RSS feed yesterday…

Email Server Issue February 1, 2009
    from Geocaching Announcements
Sometime early this morning, some minor filesystem corruption on our mail server caused outbound delivery performance to be severely reduced and a large backlog of email accumulated on the server.

The filesystem has been repaired and delivery performance has returned to normal levels. Due to the large backlog of email, it will probably take most of the day to fully deliver all queued mail.

I’ll continue to monitor the server’s health closely over the next several hours but I don’t anticipate any further issues.

in reply to: "Stacked" caches – good idea or no? #1901260

I have looked at areas for puzzles and missed puzzles because of this as others have mentioned. One area that stands out was a while back when I was planning a trip to Green Bay there were a bunch of them that were stacked up on the southeast side of the city that I missed (and were solvable for me) because they were stacked. I only found out they were there after I got serious about trying to solve puzzles and ran a pq for the area. I was disappointed to find I missed them.

Stacking doesn’t seem like a problem when it is in an area you regularly cache in close to home, but to me I really think it causes problems when you are traveling to an area and using the google maps feature to create a pocket query for the trip.

in reply to: What kind of GPS do you have? #1901119

We have 2 Lowrance IFinders that we cache with.

I also have a Trimble unit that I have used to hide caches, but that is a work GPS.

Yes, all MiGO members get a 10% discount card for Dunhams.

One issue would be that it may not be possible to place an EC in Menonomie County, since the entire county is reservation land.

I am not familiar with this particular tribe, but it may be worth trying to contact them about doing something like this as they may be open to it. I have a few (physical) caches that are hidden on a reservation up here. I approached the tribal chair and he thought it was a great way to bring people out to the reservation and was very open to it. As long as you aren’t trying to do something near any cultural areas that particular tribe may be approachable on it. Now, I must admit that I do work for the tribe up here (Hannahville Potowatomi), but I have found that a lot of our tribal members enjoy having visitors to the reservation and are looking ways to get people to come visit the main reservation (ie, off the highway and not just the casino).

I love the new forum as well. I am always hoping to learn something new and this forum may very well help me to gain insight on some puzzles that I am struggling with.

in reply to: How many unfound but solved puzzles do you have? #1898228

I keep a list of Solved Puzzle Caches that we need to get out and find. Most of the solved puzzles are either in Mathatopia, Selzzup, or Grand Rapids, Michigan (near Lynn’s hometown). Currently we have 83 on the list, but over Thanksgiving break when we were in Lower Michigan I was able to knock about 40 off this list.

    in reply to: Multiphobia! #1898336

I guess it depends. When we are travelling and there is time constraints, it makes multi’s more difficult to do because of the greater time involved. That being said, many of the caches that we have done that I would consider the best we have ever been have been multis, so they can be hard to pass up as well.

“Specifically, she asked me about, “State Plane NAD83, Zone 4803 South coordinates”.

I will take a stab at this…I work in GIS in the UP and have a master’s in the field. I will try to put it into everyday terms as best I can, but it is difficult since I am what is referred to as a “map geek”.

State Plane NAD83, Zone 4803 South coordinates refers to what is known as the projected coordinate system. Basically, what this means is that in order to get everything to overlay (line up) correctly on a map, everything has to be projected in the same manner, or things will not line up correctly. Think about all the different world maps that you have seen in your lifetime, there are many different types with distortions that occur at different places depending on what type of map it is. These distortions also happen while working with maps at a state or a regional level because of the curvature of the earth (you are mapping a curved surface to a flat picture).

So getting back to the State Plane NAD 83, Zone 4803 South, that is the method that the county uses to project their data (image). I am not familiar with the software that they mentioned, but basically you should be able to plot your lat-long coords into the software they cited, and convert it to to the projected coordinate system that they mentioned above. This will allow your gps points to correctly line up with the aerial imagery the county has for mapping purposes because they will both be projected in exactly the same manner.

Most GIS software will have the above mentioned coordinate system built in as it is a national standard for that particular part of Wisconsin. Every state in the country has these coordinate systems standardized for different regions of their state, this system is known as the State Plane coordinate system.

    @Gram&Gramps wrote:

” If you’d like me to register your image we could try to do that. Just attach it to an email along with the waypoints and I’ll see what I can do.”

In this statement registering an image refers to tying an image into the projected coordinate system based upon known points so that it can be used in conjunction with other data layers for display purposes (basically you could look at it in mapping software and the latitude and longitudes will be known).

Hopefully this helps a little bit to answer your question in layman’s terms. If not please let me know and I can try to do a little bit better for you.

in reply to: MIGO cachers #1896373

I guess I should check here more often. I know that Team LaLonde (new UP RVP) was working with them as best they could. Unfortunately the state park called MiGO very late (too late to set up an actual event) for help.

Now if we could get Lycoperdon to go thru all the caches that have lots of dnf’s in a row and it pretty much looks like it is missing and mark them as needs archiving too that would be great. Since it looks like most of us are afraid to do it our selves.

Yeah, that would be wonderful if he/she did that 🙄 . Just like the person from Texas (not a sock puppet) that polices all the UP caches for us did for one of my caches that hadn’t been found for a long time. I knew it was still there, but that wasn’t good enough for him. So, I drove out and checked on it and it was still there all safe and sound. Just because there is a dnf or two doesn’t mean that it is gone for sure. People sometimes get lazy looking after a seeing a previous dnf log because they assume it is gone and don’t look as hard as they should, which can lead to a series of dnf logs. Even though I don’t care for the guy from Texas, at least he has the integrity to post all these logs under his account instead of hiding under a sock puppet.

I didn’t see that one before. I have been spending so much time on all your puzzles that I haven’t even had time to look at any of your traditionals! (I am not complaining, keep the puzzles coming, I love em, now I just have to figure them out!)
