Each cache page has the option of listing “Hunting” as an attribute. Common sense should tell you to stay away during the hunting season.

I’m with you, but if this is the case, then why do people keep looking for caches that we have disabled for hunting season. I had 4 or 5 found it logs this weekend on caches I had disabled for hunting season. One person that logged several of these caches said in their cache logs that they were taking a break from hunting to do some caching. 🙄

I guess you can never take common sense for granted.

I disabled the caches we own that are in hunting areas for the rifle hunting season up here. I don’t worry about doing that for bow, small game, or black powder though, just the two week rifle deer season.

Wow, that looks like it was nasty, I am glad that you and the other driver were both ok.

in reply to: Logging DNFs #1881039

We always post DNF’s on caches we search for and cannot find. When we first started caching we would log a dnf and then delete that log if we found the cache later on. Usually if we did that we would state that we couldn’t find the cache at whatever the previous dnf date was. The reason we did this was to keep track of the caches we had attempted to find but couldn’t locate by clicking on the couldn’t find log section of our gc.com page. We have since abandoned deleting dnf logs when we find a cache that we previously couldn’t find because I like having that bit of history of our caching experience.

We will post a note instead of a dnf if we get to a cache location and don’t look for it because there are too many people around.

Well done WGA! What an excellent way to represent geocachers in your state.

Sorry to hear that. Lynn and I both wish you the best of luck for a successful surgery and a quick recovery.

Thank you Jim, I will check into this.

I, too, am constantly surprised to find Park and Ride / Guardrail / Lamppost caches getting 10-100 times more visits than the many excellent caches in the state. I think this is a result of the focus people put on find statistics. I have come to the conclusion that a majority of geocachers actually prefer spending time in parking lots to spending time in the woods, prairies and marshes around the state. That’s OK, though. It just leaves more space in the woods for us!

As the oldest oldtimer geocacher in the WGA, I thought I was one of the few who held this “outdated” perception of what geocaching is all about. Thanks for posting this viewpoint.

This must make it much more difficult to be a reviewer than if you enjoyed park and grabs and other similar caches. I know I would have a hard time approving a wal-mart parking lot cache myself, but I guess you don’t really have much choice in the matter right now.

in reply to: Anyone else underwater? #1878210

Wow, I wish we could have got a little bit (but not all) of that rain up here. We haven’t had any real rainfall in a couple of months up here. It is as dry as a bone up here (in fact there is a burning ban for the entire UP and most of MI right now), and I sat and watched the Packers game Saturday night and it rained almost the whole game. 🙄

Sorry to hear about all the flooding and trouble the rain has caused in your area. I hope that you all come out of it alright.

Then again, that title could easily be changed. But are MANY people unhappy with being Friends?

Not me, I am not worried about it. Personally, I don’t think that the WGA should allow me to be a voting member. On the flip side of that, I don’t think anyone from outside Michigan should be able to vote in a MiGO election, even though we have people from Wisconsin, Ohio, and Ontario, Canada who participate in our discussions more than most Michigan cachers.

I am in a little bit different position than lagrac in that I strongly identify myself with Michigan caching and MiGO. Although I grew up in the UP (about 45 minutes from Marinette and Niagra) and live here now, when we started caching we lived in the lower peninsula near Lansing, which has caused me to identify myself as a Michigan cacher. With that being said, I am now and will always be a die hard Packer fan, so please don’t kick me out. 😆

I would even recommend expanding it beyond Delorme challenge completion (e.g. fulfilling several of the following requirements – 10 counties or DeLorme pages, or 50 Wisconsin caches on more than a single trip, or perhaps even 10 posts in the forums).

We do a fair amount of caching in Wisconsin, I just checked and we have completed 21 of the DeLorme pages, cached in 24 of the 72 Wisconsin counties, currently have 257 Wisconsin finds, and this is my 146th post. Again, we do not even come close to lagrac’s Wisconsin caching accomplishments.

in reply to: Phone a Friend #1877996

In Michigan, we have an actual phone a friend list that is maintained by a cacher. It is publicized through the MiGO forums, but it is NOT maintained by MiGO. The way it works is that every month or two, an email is sent out to each person that is on the phone a friend list with an excel file, pdf, and a file to put it on your palm if you so desire.

If you are not on the phone a friend list you don’t get the email. To get on that list you have to provide your real first name(s), caching name, home, cell, or work #’s (not all are necessary), what time would be appropriate to call, home town, zip code, and email to the person that maintains the list.

By having this list we are able to call people for help if needed, even if we are traveling downstate where we don’t know a lot of people (and hence wouldn’t have their #’s). On the flip side, we get a few calls from people visiting the UP that we haven’t met, and in a few instances, we have ended up meeting people because of talking to people off this list. We have only used if for help a couple of times (when stages were missing of a multi, etc), but we have found it a great help since we have been on it.

I was just looking at our list and their are 161 people on it, and even one team from Wisconsin! 😯

If someone were to do something like this for Wisconsin we would be happy to participate in it as we cache pretty frequently in Wisconsin and I know that a lot of you Cheeseheads come caching up here in Yooper country!

We really liked the Million Marbles cache. This cache will take you on an approx .4 mile hike along the south side of a large ravine. On the way back you will get a very nice overlook view of Torch Lake which would meet your overlook requirement. Once you get back near the cache, there are several waterfalls with (I would have to guess) at least a 100 foot drop. There is another cache in the same area Hungaria

I have not been there in the summer, only in the spring, but the falls were absolutely amazing at that time of year. There are trails on both sides of the ravine, but we only walked the south side. The north trail is an easier hike from what I understand, and we did see a few other people out there.

There are several pictures on each cache page to help you decide if this cache would meet your criteria. Good luck finding your milestone cache!
