Woohoo! You made it! (Now, you have 3 days to get to 5000. Go!)
Well, Vegas Gamblers is correct that you cannot have two maps of the same area with a preloaded chip, but I don’t know that you would ever want to do that. The preloaded cards have the entire US on them, so changing areas where you are caching isn’t going to be much of a problem. If you are going out of the US, just buy the chip for the country you are going to and swap it when you get there.
The limitation of swapping map types comes into play if you want to have a combination of road, topo, and lake maps of the same area at the same time. Your GPS will allow you to switch between map types on the fly if you have all the maps loaded. If you can foresee a need for this, you should probably stick with the CDs. If you are only going to use the road maps, the chip is probably your best choice. I personally use only the Topo maps (autorouting is for sissies!) If I could have purchased the Topo maps on a chip, I would have done it. Unless you want to load the entire set of maps from the CD into the SD card (possible if you have a big enough card), it is very easy to get to a location and find that you didn’t load the proper maps (happened to me in Chicago–NOT GOOD!) Using the preloaded maps means you ALWAYS have the road map you need, without the need to move maps in and out.
Incidentally, the list price on the City Navigator NT CD is $139. The price for the preloaded MicroSD card is $200. You can find both cheaper at various internet outlets.
Did Charter recently set up an “anti-spam” filter? If so, did you set up gc.com as an acceptable email source?
Well, sticking with Jeremy’s thought, I’d have to go with “Tree Branches Bent”, but I think “Three Film Cans” is better.
How about 2 Double As
Great job! Wish we could say we had that few DNFs, but about 1/2 of our DNFs were archived soon after we reported the DNF. Such is life!
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…Beer! (Oh wait, thats a DIFFERENT version)
Good seeing you on the trails! Congrats on the milestone! (You still have 8 days to get 2000 before yearend).
As I’m sure you have discovered, the base maps on Garmin’s are pretty pathetic. If you want a true road map, the only package compatible with the Vista Cx is City Navigator. This also allows you to do PC based routing and download the routes to the GPS. (This GPS does not do “on the fly” autorouting.) If you are cheap (like me) and willing to put up with an occasional out of date street you can get the TOPO USA package for about half the price. This also provides topographic data and other geographic features useful for off road navigation (like powerlines, USGS marsh data, and the like. It doesn’t do autorouting (at least not very well!) on the PC, but you can use other software for that (MS S&T, Street Atlas USA, Google Earth, etc.)
Here is an example of the TOPO USA Map:
Notice the contour lines as the Highway Y climbs the hill to the NW, and the marsh information around Big Muskego Lake.
Here is an example of City Navigator:
Similar, but no geographic data and this one does a better job with the park boundaries (at least around Muskego.)
Finally, while not “technically” compatible, I think the Metroguide maps will work as well. They look similar to the city navigator maps. If you are leaning this way, I would borrow a disk from someone who already has it to ensure that it will actually work.
The advantage to the Metroguide maps is that they are not “Locked” (nor are the TOPO maps.) City Navigator uses a copy protection system where the initial CD contains permissions for uploading to two different GPSs. If you have more than two GPSs, or you get a new GPS, you will need to buy a new license for the new GPS. Metroguide and TOPO US maps can be used on as many GPSs as you like. This means that you have to be VERY careful buying used copies of City Navigator, as you could end up buying a copy without a working license. No such worries exist for the other two packages.
You can find TOPO US and Metroguide from http://www.gpsdiscount.com for under $80. The cheapest I’ve seen City Navigator for is $120, but you can probably do a little better if you try.Marc, I am getting ready to go to Indy for Christmas and I can tell you that Indy is THE place for puzzle cache density. Out of 800 caches in the PQs (two geographic centers), there were over 150 mystery caches, most of which were puzzles. I’ve been working steganography, picture puzzles, puzzles involving brazilian gambling games, chemistry puzzles (apparently lots of chemist cachers down there), biological puzzles (involving a first order decay function of the blood serum levels of LSD admistered to a dog by the CIA (Cat Intelligence Agency) of all things) along with the normal math puzzles, language puzzles, regular codes, quizzes, etc. So far there are two that have really stood out.
First, this one (GCKJBG). I’ve worked out the first part and really want to finish it to see how it progresses. This looks like a really unique one. I think I will try to do a similar one up here.
On the other hand, this one (GCTNJT) is almost breathtakingly ridiculous. Its like the puzzle cache equivalent of a park and ride cache. Probably a lampost hide as well.
Actually, if you look at these “negative” lists (travel bug jails, armchair caches, “injured reserve” 😀 , etc.), you will see that they almost always have a positive rating. You would think that peoples whose caches are on those lists would vote “not useful” but that doesn’t seem to happen.
I think you have to go recover the number from the cache, but you try emailing the “owner”. No idea if anyone is watching that account.

I agree with Team DEEJay (sorry if I spelled it wrong!) and where is Rochester,wi?
Rochester is 5 miles NE of Burlington, about 25 miles SW of Milwaukee. Just over 1000 people.
What if they made use of some of the more scenic traditional caches already in place? I’m sure most of the owners would welcome the opportunity. After all, why place a temporary right next to an existing cache? Any punches/stamps/coupons/etc. could be put into any cache sized small or bigger. Just a thought.
There is already the blue ring, which is supposed to be the “attachment”. I will be adding a goal tag, however, so people finding it in the field will know if they can help it on its journey or not.
