That’s great — In your typical vehicle I’m so tall that the rearview mirror partially blocks my view of the right side of the road. I have to duck down a tad when checking for traffic when crossing lanes or pulling out from a stop at an intersection. If that the case all the rearview mirrors placed by manufacture are against the law. I’m only 6 feet tall which is becoming far more standard in height.

I understand that cars sold in Minnesota have the rear view mirror mounted on the back window to avoid violating the law.

You really wonder who thinks up some of these laws. Do they really think it is safer to drive around with the GPS on the seat, looking away from the road to read it? How about holding it in one hand while you drive, especially with a manual transmission (my personal technique)? Of course, the people of Minnesota and California elected these nitwits, so I guess they are getting what they deserve.

I just heard on the news yesterday that the Milwaukee project is not going forward, at least with the vendor previously selected. It seems that there was concern about the “no-bid” process used to select the vendor and certain alderman having received contributions from said vendor. Hmmm, sounds familiar…..

in reply to: Question on Travel Bugs #1765706

When we first started, we would write down all the bugs in the cache and “grab and put back” the ones we didn’t move. In short order, this became too much work, so now we just log the ones we move.

in reply to: Rabble Rousing…to post or not to post? #1765632

One problem about message boards is that the postings are made without vocal inflection or facial expressions, so that something posted in jest can be interpreted as an attack and something posted as a suggestion can be interpreted as a demand. There are several types of posts that can start firestorms (I think all of them are displayed in the thread in question).

    • Sarcasm (This almost never has the effect the writer expects)
    • Statements implying a person’s motives are “less than pure”
    • Statements expressing disrespect for another person
    • Statements implying that someones volunteer efforts “are not good enough”

Typically, it is not the content of peoples argument, but the tone of the commentary that causes the problems.

They appear to be using the name “ChinaMommy” for their caching name, in case you want to check them out. I have to believe that these people have many of these blog “carnivals” under their wing. Kind of a strange concept. You “own” the blog, so you get to sell adspace to Google, Yahoos, etc., but you get someone else to write all the content. Nice work if you can get it!

I don’t know if I can link to a pocket query, but I’ll try.

Uh, this isn’t going to work. You can do this:

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?lat=45.6714&lon=-90.390533

Or you can create a bookmark list, and link that, but not a pocket query.

I just acquired a companion. His name …yes HIS name is “Maverick” Problem.. I don’t think he’s gonna be any help. Hmmm sound familiar??!! LOL Have not found out how to download any WPTs to him, so I guess He’ll have to stop at gas stations and ask directs, since he can at least get us there.

Uh, Bunny, maybe it has a given name, other than Maverick, that one of us could use to help you?

in reply to: WHO KNOWS THE WGA BOD? (just a FUN little poll) #1765417

7, but 2 only by their caching names and 1 I wouldn’t recognize if I was standing next to her.

But since it;s being talked about, Like every thing in Wisconsin, everything deals with the south. It’s like everything above Eau Claire doesn’t count. Yes I understand the majority of members are from the southern part of the state. Here is an example. How many Caches of the month have been nominated from the north part of the state? How many members have actually gone caching in Sawyer, Washburn,Bayfield, Douglas, Burnette and Price counties? When was the last Geo-caching event in any one of those counties. How many board members are there from those counties?

First, don’t feel you are being left out on purpose. People will naturally work on issues closest to home. There are quite a few caches nominated that are north of Eau Claire, and even more that are right at the same latitude as Eau Claire. There are (I believe, working from memory) that there are 5 COTM winners north of Eau Claire, and somewhere around 25 nominees. The Adventure Begins (in Superior) almost won a couple months ago. (I assume Superior still counts as north of Eau Claire.) If you want more nominees, then nominate the great caches that you find up there. A lot of people use the nominees as a kind of “to do” list.

With regard to the other stuff, that is up to you. You can host an event, you can run for the board, you can vote for board candidates from your area, and you can be as involved as you like. You can also encourage others in your area to get more involved. You can place more caches, which is sounds like you are already doing, to bring people into the area to find them. The more you put into the sport, the more you will get out of it. You can’t expect someone from Kenosha to drive up to Hayward to host an event for you to attend, but you would be surprised how many people would come up to a Hayward event if you hosted it (even from Kenosha).

I would suggest that, if you really want to start a discussion on this topic, you should start a new thread entitled “How can we get more geocaching involvement in Northern Wisconsin.” If you want help hosting an event, ask on the boards. If you want to run for the board, get out to every event you can and meet people. And, most importantly, don’t take this too seriously. Enjoy the sport for what it is, an enjoyable activity for sharing time in nature with friends and family. Everything else is just window dressing.

in reply to: should paces be used as a measurement? #1765369

Of course, everyone’s pace is different, plus, more importantly, there is disagreement whether a pace is 1 step or 2 steps. If you assume a pace is 3 feet (or 6 feet in the two step version), you will be close enough to start a search.

in reply to: Cache Rescue System Beta Test #1765293

We completed the first cache rescue this morning (Lyons State Forest). When we posted the report the system worked correctly to remove the mission from the list of available mission. Nothing else happened, but I am assuming that the rest of the system will update when the reviewers approve the rescue.

I think that in virtually *all* cases of caches needing rescue, the owners are no longer involved in Geocaching so most of the time this isn’t going to be an issue.

The cache I am referring to is Stop and Cache – Fire. The owner currently has 18 active caches, placed as recently as April, and has logged finds as recently as August 20. I suppose he could have suddenly quit geocaching. Just seems strange….

Anyway, we are heading out to pickup Lyons State Forest tomorrow.

in reply to: Cache Rescue System Beta Test #1765288

One other question on this. I noticed one cache on the list belonged to a active cacher in SE Wisconsin, who has 18 caches still active. I won’t mention the name of the cache or owner, but if you cache in SE Wisconsin, you will know which one it is. Doesn’t this person respond to emails at all? I would think the owner should be the person to “rescue” if they are at all active.

As I wrote that, I thought of another question. Will there be any restrictions on new placements from people whose caches have to be rescued? I would think that they would at least have to convince an approver that they understand their responsibilities before they could place another cache. In most cases, these folks are no longer involved, but not all cases, as above.
