The following packages will upload tracks or waypoints from a GPS, print maps, and retain the information:
Garmin Mapsource (requires at least one map package)
Delorme Street Atlas and Delorme Topo
USA Photomaps (Free, but takes a bit to learn and LOT of disk space)Google Earth will take waypoints if you go through some file conversions, but if you have to ask this question, GE is probably not a good choice.
I am virtually certain that the Magellan map package (the name escapes me) will allow track uploads as well.
Someone else will have to comment on Microsoft Streets and Trips.
I’ll add to Ken’s and PCFrog’s points.
With a non-profit corporation (I’m assuming we are incorporated), especially one that does not have much in the way of ongoing expenses, it is somewhat risky to raise money without a plan for spending it. I am on the board of another organization that almost lost its non-profit status due to such activity. I think that, rather than a one-time fee, the board should determine what our “normal” expenses are, then, if desired, have “premium” membership fees set to cover this cost. I suspect that most active members would be more than happy to pay their share. Alternatively, we could just have an annual Geo-coin project and price the coins such that sales will generate enough profit to cover our annual expenses.
Similarly, if we want to do a bench or other charitable donation, rather than taking it from existing funds (although that is certainly ok), we could do a one-time (or annual) “raise money for a bench” program, maybe with kickoff and closing events. The key is that you cannot just keep raising money without spending it and stay non-profit.
All this stuff is true, but if you don’t want to become an HTML expert, there is a much easier way (if you use Microsoft Word).
1. Create the text for your page in Word, formatting it however you like. (One exception is spacing. HTML will insert space between paragraphs automatically, so don’t put in extra lines or you will have 3 lines between paragraphs.)
2. Do a Save As and save as an HTML file.
3. On the View menu, select HTML Source.
4. Skip past all the Microsoft garbage (in green on my computer) at the beginning, scrolling until you find the token .
5. Copy all text from down to the bottom.
6. Paste the copied text into GC.com web page. This works for both the short and long descriptions. You may still want to tweak it by inserting
and the like. Also, remember that you have to have any photos/picture out on the web (rather than on your private hard drive) to use them on your page. The coordinates are off by 2 miles, yet they still found it! We want to team up with them.
Yes, the formerly missing section was between 68th and 76th. The road does appear to be fairly new (less than 10 years old).
Wow, Marc, that is a BIG number. Congrats!
Give me a call at home tonight, after 7, and I can walk you through it. It is really very easy once you understand how it works. Phone is 262-534-9087.
If you only want some of the databases, you can just copy the folders between computers. the path is Program Files/GSAK/data/ Just move the entire folder (the folders have the same name as the database) onto a flashdrive. Then on your new computer, move them into the program files/gsak/data directory. Two drag and drops is all it takes.
I’d second Sean Connery’s comments. Also, pay attention to sales and rebates. I ended up buying a 76Cx for less than the best price I could get on a 60CSx. These two are basically the same unit except the 76 is buoyant and has a different case/layout/form factor. The functionality is identical and I believe the screen size is identical as well.
I don’t know if this is a credit class or not, but my recollection of college classes is that they have no qualms about requiring supplies for classes, regardless of costs. I would think you could make the purchase of a GPS a prerequisite for the class without causing significant issues.
That said, I have an etrex yellow you can borrow.
Does anyone know if there is a similar project/company for trails? The only trails I ever find in my topo maps are in National Parks (not counting railroads which have been converted to trails). I would love to “track” the trails in my favorite parks and upload them to the USGS map database, but so far, I haven’t found anyone who has started this as a project. Of course, there is nothing stopping me from contacting the USGS myself, but I am thinking I am just not finding the project.
And Tyedyeskyguy, the closest missing road I have found to us is Puetz Road in western Milwaukee County. The map database stops at the Root River, but the road actually runs all the way to 76th Street. (But then again, I am using Topo maps. Maybe the road is actually there in the Navteq DB.)
Thanks everyone. We have to say that geocaching might be the only activity/sport/hobby that we have participated in where virtually everyone is friendly, supportive and welcoming. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to make us feel like part of the family.
Thanks, Marc!
Not a bad idea, but, unfortunately, you picked the wrong forum to suggest it.
Go to the geocaching com forums. They have a forum for suggestions for website improvements. I don’t know if you frequent other online message boards normally, but you will find the GC.com boards to on the “snippy” side. Be sure to have a thick skin when you post.
Now you tell me! Actually I forgot them anyway. You know, I’ve been to 6 events now, but this was the first one that provided maps. Nice job on the picnic, everyone.
