    7. Its on the cache listing, not the forum.

I don’t know the website software you are using, but here is an idea. What if we use one of the databases (like the milestones or States/counties/countries) to hold this and provide a way to download a text file or similar of the data? Someone could then periodically get the text file, run it through GPS Babel, and then upload the corresponding GPX and LOC files. I wouldn’t have an issue with doing the upload/conversion/downloads if the data was available.

in reply to: Cache Names #1764586

One other tip… While you want to avoid duplicate names in the immediate area, don’t worry about duplicates more than 100 miles away, even if they are in Wisconsin. There are two caches called “The Island”, one near Delafield and one near Wausau, and I don’t believe anyone is confused by this.

On the other hand, be very careful to avoid names similar to those of caches that are very close. Example: If you are placing a cache in Mukwonago, don’t name your cache Place of a Bear, which is technically different from the nearby Place of the “Bear”, an existing area cache. Many people use software which strips out the “a”s, “of”s, “the”s, etc. from the name, so this will confuse some people.

OK, I assume you want the finals to mystery caches and all stages of multis. Do you need the “Answer to a question” or virtual locations as well?

Brian, will it help you for us to add the hidden locations for existing caches or do you just want this for new ones?

in reply to: DNR Geocaching policy is now in effect ! #1764346

I have to say that the response from the land manager at Bong was very positive. I offered to give them a tour of all the caches, but they said they would rather find them “the regular way”. A face-to-face is always best if you can swing it. Now I am working on figuring out who the land manager is for Dover Waterfowl Refuge. (If you look at the DNR mapping facility, this is one of those little “scattered wildlife areas”. I have driven by this place everyday for 12 years and have never seen anyone there ever.) I will be calling the service center on Monday.

I really would like to thank all the board members for being proactive on this. This really was the right thing to do for the long term health of geocaching. I hope that, after some of the dust shakes out, we can revisit the concept of requiring some reason beyond “because I say so” for rejecting a cache, if that is indeed what is happening.

One question I just thought of: I know of at least one cache in Bong that is owned by non-WGA members (GCJ8EA). I’m sure there are other around. Is there any process to notify these guys of the new policy?

Actually, fantasysailing states in their auctions that they are authorized. (i.e. item 170016344644)

OK, I stated that incorrectly. I should have said no one selling on Ebay using an auction is authorized. The “Buy it now only” vendors are basically regular online merchants who don’t have their own website. I didn’t see on that listing that they were authorized, but they are promising a “dealer receipt” so it is certainly possible that they are authorized or serving as a front for an authorized dealer.

On the other hand, here is a quote from the Garmin FAQ: http://www.garmin.com/support/faqs/faq.jsp?faq=607

    Q. Does Garmin have any authorized dealers on eBay or any other online auction site?
    A. Garmin does not have any authorized dealers that sell new products directly on online auction sites. Any purchases made through online auction sites are on a ?buyer beware? basis. A copy of the original sales receipt is required as the proof of purchase for warranty repairs. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification and Garmin will not replace any missing components from any package purchased through an online auction.

Also, do not include your tags in the same paragraph as your text. In this example, you have the following code:

It does not matter which one you find first. Though I think the new
conatiner will be the easiest to find. <a href=
    "http://www.kicktheoilhabit.org" target="_blank"><img src=
    "http://www.kicktheoilhabit.org/img/links/150x200.gif" alt=""
    height="200" width="150" border="0">

    Change it to be:

It does not matter which one you find first. Though I think the new
conatiner will be the easiest to find. <a href=
    "http://www.kicktheoilhabit.org" target="_blank"><img src=
    "http://www.kicktheoilhabit.org/img/links/150x200.gif" alt=""
    height="200" width="150" border="0">

Notice the /span and /p tags are moved from the bottom to the end of the text.

One other tip: While all the online sellers mentioned above (and many others) are authorized Garmin dealers, no one selling on Ebay is authorized. That means that you will not be able to use the rebate coupon, and quite possibly there may be some issues with your warranty. While I do buy all sorts of stuff on Ebay (especially GPS cables), I would be careful buying a new GPS from there. Garmin’s stated policy is that “grey market” and “online auction” units are not covered under warranty. I almost had a chance to test this policy, but fortunately the Ebay guy took the defective unit back (and I was out the shipping costs).

I have had good luck with http://www.GPSDiscount.com. Their current price on the 60CSx is $399. Before you buy this, you should also consider the 60Cx, which does all the good things of the CSx without the internal compass (or barometric altimeter). Usually this is around $50 cheaper. I tried a CSx and decided the internal compass was too finicky for me, requiring that the GPS be held at a specific angle and requiring frequent recalibrations (if you ever see anyone spinning in circles while holding a GPS parallel to the ground, they are calibrating their compass). I have found the regular GPS altitude readings to be within 20 feet of posted altitudes, so I don’t really see the point of the barometric altimeter for any application.

Additionally, no matter where you buy it, Garmin is offering a $50 rebate on the 60CSx and 60Cx (as well as the etrex Xs). here is a link to the coupon:

in reply to: Repeat Caches #1764260

Last fall, I dropped a WJTB in a series cache final with the intent of increasing interest in that particular series. Someone who had found the cache a week before, went and took the Jeep the very next day. When I last checked, this person had yet to put the jeep into another cache. To be sure, I found this to be very annoying. I can only imagine the frustration when this happens to someones personal coin.

in reply to: GSAK to PQs? #1764323

If you want to generate a bookmark list from GSAK, there is a prewritten macro out there at

    http://gsak.net/board/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=8877

Unfortunately, this macro can only execute one line at a time, because it is necessary to hit a button on the GC.com website for each bookmark (the Save Bookmark button), so it is slow going. Add to this the fact that bookmark lists are limited to 200 entries (I think, this has changed recently) and you have not a very good solution.

My recommendation is to rebuild your KML and recreate the caches along a route PQ. In case you didn’t realize, you can specify a Lat/Long to Google Earth to create the route, not just a city. This allows you to create very specific routings. Note that you probably will need at least 2 PQs.

Once you have the PQs, if you only want to update the caches in the list, not bring in new ones, be sure to select Database Update Options | Existing Only in the Advanced options.

Sorry for the bad news. Next time, keep the KMLs. They are only relatively small text files.

in reply to: Wisconsin State Fair Grounds – caches? #1764297

There were a couple there that have been archived for various reasons. Here is a list of caches near the Fairgrounds.

    http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=8331cecc-69f6-4b95-8851-04f108f52434

I have done both Cornered and 500 and Counting. Both of these were fun to find.

Edit: Oops, picked the wrong list for the link.

in reply to: State Park vehicle sticker needed at picnic #1764152

Alternatively, if you are coming on highway 12, you can stop at the LaGrange General Store (12 & H) to get a permit. They also have free parking if you want to walk/run/bike/hitchhike/CARPOOL (with someone who already has an annual sticker) the 1.5 miles from the store to the picnic area. The parking is directly across highway H from the store. Note that if it doesn’t rain, you will be competing for parking with the mountain bikers.

OK, we’re bringing 80 lbs of charcoal, just to be safe. Whatever we don’t use will be donated to the organizers (we use a gas grill).
