Just taking a run around the post.

Cathunter, I would love to take you up on your offer, even though I am more likely to go for the 500 (my $10 Silva compass works just fine, thank you!) I probably don’t need to borrow it for 2 weeks. Just a couple days would let me determine how well the signal holds in the woods. I have to say that I was amazed at the difference of the 60CSx I had for a couple days. I could get 8 foot accuracy in the house in around a minute on a cold boot. Unfortunately, that unit was defective and scared me away from Garmin. It sounds like they have gotten their act together on these units now (on the gc forums). So now I just have to decide what is best for me. I will send you an email through gc.com.

If you are buying software, it probably doesn’t matter, but if you are buying another GPSr, you need to make sure that you are buying from an “authorized dealer”. I made the mistake of buying a 60CSx on Ebay, which turned out to be defective, and almost ended up eating it when I found that Garmin will not honor a warranty for units not bought from authorized dealers. If they are authorized it will usually say on the website.

Thanks for the replies, folks. I wasn’t trying to start a flame war, however. I should have stated that I was looking for commentary from people who have used both brands (or other brands as well). Summarizing, it sounds like Magellan’s standard unit can get about the same reception as the Garmin x units at a lower cost, but they also appear to have some significant quality issues and poor customer service, which is NOT a good combination. I still have to think about it some more. Thanks again for all the input.

I also agree with Hogrod’s comment. A hidden advantage to this is that only one side of the coin will need to be redesigned for the next edition. (I’m hoping for a Greyhounder badger on the next one!)

I doubt that you will need that many temps. The class we attended last fall only had 8 temps, including a virtual. As far as I know, we were the only newbies to attempt all eight. Remember that many of these people will have never found a cache, and that we will only have about 2 hours of daylight to work with. Also, you probably should have at least one two-stage multi and one virtual, so that they understand the concepts. I have had to explain the multi concept to several people trying to find “Sticks and Stones”. All of them had actually found the first waypoint, but ignored it because they were looking for the final at the WP1 location. (I know this isn’t my cache, but it is one of several abandoned caches on my babysitting list.)

Maybe we should take this to email if we want to get into specifics.

How about ; ? Conveniently located on the right side of the keyboard for easy access

If you want, I can place the temps, which I would intend to list as permanents just before the event (Bong is my “homefield”.) How many do you have in mind? Is the seminar in the nature center building just inside the gate?

We will be there. Are we going to use the caches already in the park or will this be temps?

Assuming you are using GSAK (I seem to remember that you were), there is a nice macro for displaying the current filter/database in Google Earth, which is way more useful than displaying the entire world, IMHO. Here is a link to the macro

    link.

Email me if you need help installing the macro or running it. It is very easy once you get the hang of it.

I have this macro assigned to a button in GSAK, so my process is build the filter list (usually caches along a route or a cache raid), display in Google Earth, order the list using the Usersort field, download to GPS, download to Palm (defining waypoint name as the concatenation of usersort and smart name so that it sorts properly in the palm), hit the trail.

All depends on the date, but if it works, Mr. Deejay will be there. I’ve got a lot of weekends committed, however, so we will just have to see.
