Note that scaling walls is required for every Madison event, particularly those held in pizza joints.
If you are using the phone app, I believe this uses a 35 mile “radius”, but the way this seems to work is that you get all the challenges in a square bounded by 4 points 35 miles from the location at 45°, 135°, 225°, and 315°. Trigonometry will tell you that this will be only 24.7 miles at the cardinal compass points. (I believe they also neglect the curvature of the earth and measure the distance like we used to do on UTM maps.) Note that the “Get geocaches” function in the API works this same way (and is also limited to a 35 mile “radius”), so if you use the get geocaches functionality in GSAK to get caches you will see similar behavior. I’m sure this was done for programming ease, as it is simpler to define a “square” in longitude and latitude than a circle. It sure is confusing for the users, though.
The COTM poll has been fixed. Thanks for letting us know.
Seriously, Ralph, don’t waste time on it. Just take it back to the store. They will either fix it or exchange it.
All the BCCC people must be asleep. The Racine group meets every Saturday at Wilson’s Coffee Shop, 3306 Washington Ave, Racine. They usually start arriving around 7 or 730 AM and people usually hang around for a few hours. You will recognize them as the only large group in there at that time (or any other time really), along with the presence of GPSs, travel bugs and geocoins on the table (and usually lots of sweets, we are geocachers after all.) Just stop by and you will be sure to meet some people who are planning to go out caching that day.
Just click on Your Account on the top bar, click the Change Info button, and change the address. Don’t forget to hit the Save changes button at the bottom.
In that area, there is a county park, a section of the Ice Age Trail, and the Loews Lake unit of the KM state forest. As I recall, there is a very difficult multi in the county park with a small number of other caches wedged in, a handful of caches along the IAT, and a whole bunch of puzzle caches in the Loews Lake area. In May, the Loews Lake area will be pretty wet still, so bring your boots. Could you do this all in one day? Maybe… Does it matter? Just find the ones you want and enjoy the day.
The permanence guideline implies that all caches should be placed with an expected life of 3 months or more. That said, if someone places a cache which turns out to be a bad placement, they can, of course, archive the listing without waiting the 3 months. This guideline is all about intent.
As far as churning goes, putting a new cache in exactly the same spot as an old cache, owned by the same person, would generally not be allowed if we notice it. We would, as Ken did, just offer to reinstate the old listing. But, assuming they change the location or change the nature of the container or the cache, we would go ahead an publish a new listing. After all, our goal is to publish the caches submitted. If it meets the guidelines, we try to hit the PUBLISH button. Sometimes, this bites us when people place caches in folk’s driveway, place caches with very bad coordinates that turn out to be in people’s yards (and not near the street where they originally claimed), or just sneak through caches which involved defacement of public property or outright vandalism. The reality is that we can’t catch this sort of problem unless finders let us know.
Incidentally, I would say that this particular hider doesn’t hold a monopoly on this sort of “near-churning” behavior. I see it all over the state.
And you didn’t even invite me??? Have fun, guys!
Sorry for your loss, guys.
There are three real close in Minooka Park. Just search for Glow in the Dark.

GSAK definately has a nitch market and like geocaching (the game), gc.com, etc. it will need to evolve in order to stay competitive.
The one thing I’d like to see within GSAK is a gc.com style map. If it had the ability to show in interactive map it would be the ultimate piece of cache software.
It’s filtering is far superior to GC.com. It’s macros make it way more extensible than GC.com. All around it just provides way more flexibility than GC.com does. And I haven’t seen any support in GSAK for “challenges” (thank goodness).
Do you mean you want a map with all the caches in the filter on it in a separate window? Or do you mean you want the gc.com map in split screen?

This assumes you have retrieved all the logs for your caches.
Version 8 is pretty awesome. The biggest improvement is ability to connect directly to geocaching.com. This means that you can do things like:
1. Update all the caches in your database automatically (even if they are archived). No more manually going through your database to decide whether a cache is disabled or just no longer in the closest 500 caches.
2. Get a set of caches for a particular area, just like doing a pocket query, but instantly. Also, you can filter by “caches not found by” a list of up to 5 other players, use a “bounding rectangle”, choose to exclude certain peoples hides, and a few other neat choices. Unfortunately, you can’t filter by state, which makes it a little less useful for me as a reviewer and LCG admin. Note that both 1 and 2 are limited to 6000 caches per 24 hours for premium members (2 per day for nonpremium members), and item 2 is limited to a 50km radius.
3. Take a filtered database and automatically upload it to a bookmark list. (You can’t imagine how much time this is going to save me.)
4. Update just the logs of the caches in your database, or status check the caches in your database without limit.
5. Greatly improved automatic logging functionality, for you number hounds.
6. Download your pocket query directly through GSAK, without bothering to open a web browser. (Ok, this isn’t so wonderful, but I do use it.)
7. Favorites support – Whenever you download caches directly from gc.com (instead of using a PQ), the Favorites field in the database is filled with the current favorite rating. Note that this information is NOT in the pocket query yet. (It will also populate the County field automatically if you want. So far, you still have to use a macro to get the Delorme page, but I suspect this will be added soon. )
For me, I would pay for this just to get the Favorites support. Note that if you are a user of version 7, you are eligible for a discount. The discount depends on when you purchased it. The upgrade cost me $20, and I have been using V7 since it came out, so your price should be $20 or less. If you are still on V6, you can get a $5 discount. This is only for a limited time.
