Regarding wherigo, there is also an Iphone app which works pretty well. It is called wherigo and was formerly called PiGo, and before that was called wherigo. The story is that Groundspeak sent them a cease and desist when it was called wherigo, so they changed the name. Then, they improved the program to eliminate most of the bugs, so Groundspeak bought it and changed the name back.

in reply to: Price of premium memberships going up? #1954069

This is just typical of marketing done on surveys. Like any company, they want to charge the “correct” price for their product. What is “correct”?, you might ask. The correct price is where Sales x Profit per item is the maximized. My guess is that the price isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Just to save us all a lot of trouble, Groundspeak does not allow linking to this particular website on cache pages. (There are a few still out there, but none in Wisconsin that I have found.) You can indicate on your cache page that you will allow people to maintain your cache page for you if you like, but I can also tell you that such a note will NOT buy you any favor with the people looking at caches which have needed maintenance for an extended period.

FYI, I decided to give up on the Dakota and buy a PN-60. We shall see how this goes.

in reply to: New Geocache – How long before posted? #1953903

I am one of your reviewers, and what Ken says is correct. That said, if you are going to place geocaches, you need to have an active email account and monitor this email account regularly to see what is happening with your cache. Additionally, you need to make sure that emails from geocaching.com are not ending up in your spam folder. Note that you received a response (from the other reviewer) the day after you listed your cache. If you have used a “throwaway” email account to register on geocaching.com, you need to change it to an account you actually use. Otherwise, you should not be placing caches as you will not receive the necessary communications.

in reply to: What excites you about geocaching? #1954004

For me, it is the sense of adventure and exploration, combined with the social aspect of the shared experiences. I suppose this is why I don’t like power trails, LPCs, etc. I want adventure, not boring stops for numbers.

Thanks for the replies. I took out my Dakota caching Sunday and was even more disappointed. It did the road routing fine, but then, to switch to off road you had to:

1 Get out of the map view to the main menu.
    2. Enter setup. (I have already modified the menu to have Setup on the front page).
    3. Scroll twice to get to the routing setup.
    4. Select Routing.
    5. Select Routing Method.
    6. Choose Off-road.
    7. Back out of Routing.
    8. Back out of setup.
    9. Select Compass (or Map).

Compared to doing the same operation on the 76Cx:

    1. Hit the menu button.
    2. Scroll one space to Recalculate.
    3. Press enter.
    4. Scroll one space to Off road.
    5. Press enter.

For a unit allegedly designed with geocachers in mind, this sucks. As usual with touchscreens, some of the 11 button pushes have to be repeated due to “misses”. It is just very cumbersome. I’m convinced I need to take this back to the store and probably get a PN-60. If I don’t like that one, I can always bite the bullet and upgrade to the 62S.

in reply to: What is your experience with school groups? #1953822

From my perspective, what I hate to see are school groups HIDING caches. Now, I’m not talking about them hiding one cache either at the school or at a nearby park. I’m talking about case where they each hide and submit caches, with the maximum distance between them being about 30 feet.

in reply to: Caches on private property? #1953650

This is all correct information. Of course, that makes it doubly important to secure permission for any hides on private property. By giving permission, the property owner effectively protects himself from lawsuits due to random injuries. Of course, this does not mean that the property owner can actively seek to harm those visiting his property (by setting traps or attacking them, for instance). It just means that if someone slips on ice, falls out of a tree, or whatever, they can’t sue the property owner.

Note that if you place a cache on someone’s property without their permission, it is very possible that YOU will be the target of a suit. There are plenty of places out there that welcome our game. No need to encourage trespassing or other illegal activity.

in reply to: GSAK wont send gsk file #1953645

Try just using Windows to copy the file to the Colorado “drive”. If it doesn’t work, you can be sure there is something wrong with the GPS or the driver. If it does work, the problem is your GSAK setup. Assuming nothing changed in GSAK, be sure to check your Garmin driver. It is possible that it got corrupted somewhere along the way.

in reply to: Elevation Reset #1953568

Non-altimeter GPS units like this use your location to determine your altitude based on the internal map. How can you prove this? Try climbing a tree and watch your altitude NOT change. You might get a bit better results if you load a set of topo maps (instead of base or road maps), but when you are in steep terrain, near cliffs, on bridges, etc. If you really need an accurate altitude, you can either buy a unit with an altimeter or buy a separate device. Personally, I don’t need one.

I had thought that this status occurred when emails “bounced”, but I have been assured that this is not the case.

Note that some of the “Not Validated” members are old timers who joined prior to validation and then never responded to the validation email.

This partially makes sense, but why would someone place caches and less than 2 months later want to be inactive. Shouldn’t groundspeak archive rather than disable the caches?

Long ago, I stopped trying to figure out why people do the nonsense that they do. I believe they don’t archive them right away to give the person a chance to change their mind. These caches are still subject to being archived for being disabled too long.
