WA has the right idea. It is commendable to try to touch base with neighbors, but you won’t get them all. This “Be Stealthy” nonsense has to go when you are in a residential or commercial area, even in a city park. If there are people around, either give up or get them involved. Whenever I run into people (especially hunters and children) near a geocache, I always make sure they know what is going on and what the cache looks like. They are more likely to leave it alone if they are “in on the joke”.

Hopefully, I will not be reviewing caches when you submit that one.

Basically, this is supposed to be a straight, competitive site, not some sort of meta-site. Think opencaching.us except sponsored by Garmin. They will have to persuade people to relist on their site, unless they license data from Groundspeak, Terracaching, etc, which isn’t likely to happen. Quite frankly, Jay’s approach (providing a single point of contact for all things GPS/hide oriented) would be more likely to be successful. Stealing the URL from opencaching.xxx doesn’t seem like a real good way to attract the small number of users looking for an alternative.

The ALR rule doesn’t apply to old virtuals, especially when it is part of the verifications. Just add the photo requirement (and maybe add a bunch of text to the cache page, as no one will understand what it is all about without the sign.)

They are planning on a competing site. I’m betting it will go live (again) on Friday, just in time for Christmas…

I find it particularly cynical that Garmin chose to take the opencaching.com name, rather than developing their own brand. I’m guessing that those involved in the opencaching program might choose to buy a different GPS brand the next time they are in the market.

Could you create a multi-cache where:
    – if you know calc you will be sent to another wp then the final
    – if you know trig you get sent to the final after two wp’s
    – if you know geometry you get sent to the final after three wp’s
    – if you know basic math it will take four wp’s
    – if you know nothing, well too bad…

Of course you could do this. You just need to list all the waypoints and when you submit the cache.

I voted Calculus, but that doesn’t mean I think it is appropriate. Unless you are placing a cache at the home of Isaac Newton, I fail to see how such a puzzle would serve to highlight the location. Remember that this game is all about location. I don’t need to drive across the state to solve a crossword puzzle. They are in the paper every day.

Hmmm, 53167 looks to be right. In fact, it appears to center right on the post office.

He asked me to wait until the end of the month to approve is entries, so that everyone else has (false) hope.

OK, the submission form is all set. Post away.

I think you are misinterpreting GR’s comments. He isn’t saying that you need to somehow guarantee that finders won’t act disrespectfully in a cemetery. There will always be knuckleheads. But we do need to avoid encouraging people to act disrespectfully, by hiding caches in a reasonable fashion in respectful locations. Some of the caches in my area have you tripping over gravestones as you make your search. That is just too close. Another one was a nano attached to a small piece of gravel hidden in a landscaped area with similar gravel used as groundcover. This sort of hide is pretty much unacceptable anywhere except your own yard (due to expected damage to surrounding decorative plants and shrubs) and completely wrong in a cemetery.

For Milwaukee County, http://maps.milwaukeecounty.org/Geocortex/Essentials/Web/Viewer.aspx?Site=PUBLIC will help a lot. While Milwaukee County used to have one of the worst systems for land records, they have upgraded to one of the best. This particular spot is owned by the state.

CodeJunkie’s idea of the cemetery puzzle is a very good idea. I always cringe when I see a cemetery cache where the description is just “plain vanilla”. The idea is to highlight the history contained within the cemeteries, not just to find another spot to drop a pill bottle.

And thanks to everyone for the positive feedback. I sent back my first two cemetery caches tonight, and I’m sure I will be thoroughly trashed in the forums, but that’s ok. I enjoy getting abused.
