You don’t. I think the idea is to encourage you to use your Geocaching App on your phone whenever you search. Given how fast GPS drains a cell phone battery, I’m not likely to be so encouraged.

I am wondering what kind of weather should I pack for?

Any awesome hike in the wood caches that are not to far of a drive?

Weather…think cold with light snow or rain. You are really close to the lake, so temps will be on the warmer side as Milwaukee goes. Figure 30-60° during the day, 20-40° at night.

As far as caches in hiking areas go, the closest is Grant Park (slide south along Lake Drive to South Milwaukee, which is a nice spot but perhaps a bit urban for your tastes. If so, you can go a little farther south to Cliffside Park in Caledonia, which is a bit more primitive. If you use up those two spots, center yourself on Whitnall Park in Hales Corners, which has both a nature center and an arboretum.

How about a double cookoff? One winner for “cooked at home” and one winner for “cooked on the campfire”? We might need a bigger wood budget though!

All these are good suggestions, but this is a case where the best thing you can do is rely on the terrain ratings for the caches in your list. Just look for caches with 2.5 – 3.5 star terrain and you will be brought to all sorts of intersting places to hike (including most of those listed above.) Of course, you will want to visit the lower terrain rated caches in the same areas, but aiming for the higher terrains is a good way to start.

I have 396 DNFs. DNF challenges are explicitly prohibited by the challenge cache guideline. LINKY

I forgot to add that I really appreciate everyone’s DNF postings when I get notice of caches needing to be archived. If people don’t post their DNFs, it is not reasonable to expect the owner to know the cache is missing. I get a lot of “This cache hasn’t been found in 3 months. It must be missing.” on 3 star difficulty caches with 2 DNFs by one finder. It will surprise no one that we would not take action in a case like this. Maybe there were really 20 DNFs during that 3 month period, but if they aren’t logged, they don’t count.

Actually, what you don’t see is for every “dedicated” hider like Sandman who runs into this in the Green Bay / Fox Cities area, there are 10 newbies who walk away from the game because it is too hard to find a spot for their first cache. To be honest, it is a lot less crowded up there than it used to be, but it is still very difficult for beginners. Part of me would like to see a rule where you need to place 5 traditionals or multis for each mystery cache, but I know that this would just lead to a bunch of throwaway caches that no one likes.

If you are going to deface or alter someone’s property in any way, you need to have the permission of the property owner / land manager. I can tell you that most land managers do not welcome people putting hardware into the items on their property.

OK, then your problem is the other direction. You have a cache in your database which you have marked as found, but you didn’t actually log a find on it. Filter your list for found caches, then filter for cache with no found logs by you. See if anything comes up.

    in reply to: GSAK #1937261

Extra “find counts” in GSAK represent caches which you have logged more than once. Do a filter on the database to look for caches where there is more than one log by you. (There will probably several if you used notes for droping bugs, etc.) Then examine each of those for a multiple find. I had this happen to me when I logged one cache in a series twice and missed another one in the same series.

    To Copy caches between databases:

    1. Open the database to be copied.
    2. Filter the list to only get the caches you want to copy. You can use the user select checkbox if nothing else will work.
    3. On the top menu, Database | Move/Copy Waypoints. Pick the destination database. Hit go.

I’d second a vote for the Garmin 62 or the classic 60CSx or 60Cx. Tried and true technology, outstanding customer service, and lots of locals to give assistance if needed.

The Delormes are probably technically superior (at least for the price) but I have been very happy with my Garmins, so I am not likely to switch. Sometimes a company earns your loyalty through good customer service and support, along with quality devices.

I can’t speak for the quality of the new Magellans, but I have not heard about any improvements on their technical support/customer service (which is somewhat below the customer service you will receive from the IRS or an HMO.) You can talk to anyone who currently owns a Magellan. They might love their device, but if they ever have to deal with a company for service, they swear they will never deal with them again. This is a deal breaker for me.

This is the kind of ad I like to see. Now, if it said “100 nanos” or “10000 film cans”, I would be much less happy.

I find it most useful for quickly finding event listings.

What you are seeing is a conflict between the people who want to keep a certain radius around their home clear and the people who want some extra motivation to travel around the state/country/world. To be honest, I don’t really see the point of “Find 10 multicaches” type challenges. I wish we could still publish the “list of difficult caches” type challenges, but certain people ruined that for the group.
