For me, the ultimate bad hint was on a rockpile hide in Racine, with the wonderful hint “Across the street from Lee’s Deli.”

For you semi technical folks who can enter a macro, here is one to try:

    $updated = GetCounty("2b")
msgok msg=Number of county records updated: $updated
    $data = GetPolygon("ub","gsak_Delorme_WI")
msgok msg=Number of Delorme records updated: $data

(Yes, it is really that simple.)

This macro will put the county in the User Data 2 field and the Delorme page (for caches in Wisconsin) in the User Data field for all caches in the current filter. Note that only blank fields will be updated (that is what the “b” in the “2b” and “ub” mean). You can change (or add lines) the WI to another state abbreviation if you like. You can also delete the 2nd and 4th lines if you don’t want to get the message box.

We weren’t even paying attention to the numbers. We were out doing a Delorme run on our anniversary, which I guess is still numbers, just a different kind. The good news is that this was a pretty nice cache, and the one we DNFed immediately before it was a nano on a tank (with the coordinates posted no less than 100 feet from the tank….grrrrrr), so we managed to get a much better milestone. On the way home, we stopped at our favorite Madison dive (Great Dane BrewPub, we recommend the Drunken Jerk Pork with fried plantains), had a late supper, navigated our way back home and collapsed. Last night, when I finally got back to the review queue, I found 79 caches waiting. YIKES!

Curious about something, I have never been to an event (or any other “social” gathering for that matter) that requires signing a disclaimer. What’s up with that? 😯

Every WGA event requires that participants sign a disclaimer. Because our events are typically more than a simple social gathering… i.e. we encourage seeking temporary and permanent geocaches… the disclaimer is to protect the WGA and event organizers from lawsuits in the event you get injured looking for the caches.

The disclaimer used at the Cache Ba$h is based on the WGA disclaimer. The disclaimer text was examined and improved by a lawyer last year at the West Bend Chamber’s expense, and now the WGA uses this more airtight wording at its events too.

Disclaimers would be unnecessary in a world without lawyers… at least without the ambulance-chasing, con man type lawyers.

I have to agree about the lawyer thing but putting a complete disclaimer on the event page would suffice. We have been to several WGA sponsored events and have not signed anything. Has there ever been an issue where someone sued?

Actually, Wisconsin statute 895.52 makes it nearly impossible to SUCCESSFULLY sue someone for injuries incurred while participating in a recreational activity. Essentially you have to prove that the other party intentionally injured you (with an exception for contact sports, where intentional injury is also exempted!) That said, they could still file a lawsuit and waste people’s time and money defending it. Most organizations require a waiver to allow for a quick quashing of these frivolous lawsuits.

in reply to: Spinning off……tech person or outdoors person? #1911758

I’m from the other (dark) side. I’ve always been a techie, and loved gaming of all sorts. I knew I enjoyed hiking as a kid, but never could get my wife to see the merits of walking 5 miles only to end up right where you started. Geocaching gave me the chance to use technology and gaming to explore the world and see all the places that you outdoor types were keeping to yourselves. It also made the outdoors more fun for my wife (mostly laughing at me climbing trees, fording rivers, and other strange activities). Add to that the social aspect (in my opinion, geocachers are, as a group, the friendliest people I have ever met) and I was hooked.

I recall a cache in the Milwaukee area (name withheld to protect the gulity) which featured a glass jar hidden in a rockpile. One day, it became a plastic bag hidden in a rockpile with lots of broken glass.

in reply to: gsak – pilotsnipes – nuvi macro not working #1911468

The latest version of GSAK defaults to a new macro directory, so that may be the problem. That said, usually we need more than “its broke” to diagnose the problem, especially for obscure macros.

Nice job! We knew you could do it!

in reply to: The map is up! #1910710

I only create the map because certain people who shall remain nameless (but their initials are LRWR) 😉 whine when I don’t.

Seriously, I think it helps people visualize where the caches are. Of course, it is easy enough to dump the query into any mapping program or even GSAK to see the same picture.

    Uhhhh, too late.

in reply to: Delorme Map Pages #1910327

I’d suggest you start at delorme.ikrug.com.

If you are a GSAK user, I have a 4 line macro which places the county in one user data field and the Delorme page in another. If you want it, I can send it to you.

Not to be a pain in the neck, but this process you need was discussed almost exactly one month ago in this same forum. Look here.

Bumping this one up after seeing all the LCG postings approved recently. Wow! All that work by Dave is exceeded only by all the work of those seeking out the Lonelies.

And in a bit of preemptive action, let’s give Dave a bit of a breather to finish up June before getting on his case about the new LCG list.

Another big “THANK YOU!” for all of the LCG work.

in total agreement on this with one request…..
If Dave could give a ballpark idea of the cutoff date for the new list, those who have interest can research the list themselves.

Based on preliminary estimates, I’m guessing around the beginning of March, but I still need 12 more PQs to know for sure. I can guarantee that it won’t be any later than 11/30/08. I know there are at least 153 caches that have not been found since then that were placed before 6/30/07 (a little peek behind the curtain of how this all works…) and, amazingly, none of them were placed by Marc!

Try opening the GPX file with Mapsource first. Odds are, the file is corrupted. GPX files should work with POI Loader.

Also, make sure you have version 2.1.0 for the Mac.
