I think for SE Wisconsin, your two best choices are Richard Bong SRA (for pure numbers) and the Southern Unit of Kettle Moraine SF (not as many but but a bit more adventurous.)

Disappointed isn’t the word. The base maps essentially have the interstate system ONLY. They are useless. If you want autorouting, City Navigator NT is basically your only choice. If you don’t care about autorouting, you can either get the TOPO maps, find a discontinued map package on Ebay, or try the user created maps available at in the links section. We navigated with the topo maps for a long time. Eventually we decided the autorouting was worth the extra cost (something about the fifteenth time we tried to navigate down a “power line” or railroad on the topo maps…)

You have to do more than ask here. This file is not transferable through IM. Send me your email.

Rather than screwing with your main database, try setting up a database with one or two caches and see if the program runs. My guess is that it will. I found this macro to be verrrrrry sloooooow, so you might be getting timeout issues, operating system issues, etc. Also, when macros work on one system and not another, it is often the case where “special” characters included in cache names or descriptions are causing the problem. (Not special characters like / ~ and ], but characters like £ Ø and þ) Try to make your starting database with very simple caches that aren’t likely to cause the problem. Then run it. If it fails on this, it is probably an install issue (firewall, VP, etc.). If it works, it is probably a data issue where the program can’t handle ONE cache in your DB. In that case, just keep adding them a few at a time until you locate the bad actor. Then, you get to yell at the macro owner for not supporting international characters (and of course, edit your version of the cache page to eliminate the problem and lock it so it doesn’t get changed by new queries.)

Incidentally, I do have version 7.5.1 if anyone wants a copy.

Well, I downloaded it and ran it. Works as far as I can tell, but I don’t have any way to test the quality of the file produced. Try running the macro from the menu to see if the works correctly. If it does, you need to reprogram the macro button.

To be honest, this is NOT a piece of software I would depend on. I’m sure the guy is a nice guy, but since he is choosing not to house his program with the rest of the macro community, so I do wonder what he is up to. This sort of thing runs up all sorts of red flags for me (secret data collection, spyware, etc.)

Guys, one of the problems with using “user developed” addon is that the “user” is responsible for updating the macro. You need to first try contacting the author of the macro, pilotsnipes. In theory, people are SUPPOSED to delete their macros out of the database if they stop supporting them, but…. Odds are that this guy used some sort of coding “shortcut” when writing this macro which was closed with the new version.

While you are waiting (possibly forever), you might want to try the other Nuvi macro that is available. You can find it at this link.

I’ll take a look at the other macro and see if I can hack it.

Well, it is actually NOT on the list, because it was disabled when I ran the query. Since this was enabled before May 1, I will go ahead and add it for you.

So, what you are saying is that I have been wasting my time maintaining a bookmark list of all the caches in the Recommended forum?

I’m certainly biased toward my own caches, but only 1 S|S cache on a recommended list of almost 500 alongside a whole bunch of others that I have done, which I wouldn’t recommend to others, tells me this method too is subject to cache owner bias and regional emphasis.

Like some other “must do” bookmark lists, I wouldn’t trust this one to be a good representation of the best ones out there either. And I certainly wouldn’t use it…

The list is what it is, an unedited (well, almost) list of all the caches recommended by people on the recommended caches forum. The edited part is that I don’t add caches recommended by their owners (unless they slip it by me). And no, I don’t understand why someone recommended a webcam in Cleveland, certain “just ok” virtuals, plain film cans in cemeteries, and many other questionable choices, but they would probably think I was crazy to recommend some of the extreme caches I liked. Also, remember that caches that were groundbreaking in 2003 might seem a little average in 2009. But others might consider those classics.

That said, I don’t understand your comment. There is absolutely nothing to suggest that there is a regional bias, since any one from any area can contribute to the list without restriction. Cache owner bias doesn’t make sense as cache owners don’t get to recommend their own caches.

You can find it here. It is also listed in the sticky post at the top of the recommended caches forum.

You will note that I generally include a note as to who recommended a particular cache, which, of course, would not be included in a pocket query.

To clarify, it is not necessary to wait for a reply. Assuming they have an issue, they will contact you and ask you to make changes.

I’d suggest you just paint it camo green. All art (well, all good art) expresses some point of view, and I’m guessing that no railroad wants to be involved in anything like that, no matter what the agenda is.

Besides you can just get a bunch of knuckleheads like us to paint over the graffiti. No artistic talent needed.

With GC.COM now getting rid of the Additional Logging Requirements, I wonder if Mystery Caches will be next. I think that would Make Benny Happy!!!! Even though, he has a few puzzles out himself!!!!

    Ummm, nope, not gonna happen.

Folks, from a reviewer perspective, it is essential that you log your DNFs as well as any maintenance issues. When I get an NM, NA, or just an email complaint about a cache being missing, I look at the number of DNFs. If there are two DNFs on a 3 star hide, well, I’m not touching it. Maybe 40 people really DNFed it, but if they don’t log their DNFs it won’t get cleaned up in a timely fashion.

The same applies to caches not being maintained. If I see a NM log claiming a wet log, but the prior finder didn’t mention it, I’m forced to assume that the owner fixed the cache, and then it got wet again. I always try to give owners a month or more to fix any maintenance problems, so posting finds without indicating problems will keep resetting that monthly clock.

By the way, I may be the only person to log a DNF on a 1/1 virtual! I use my logs to make a record of my geocaching (mis)adventures, so I wouldn’t want to miss logging a DNF any more than i would want to miss logging a find.

    Woohoo! Congrats, guys!
