    Don’t forget that there are also several good permanent caches in Governor Dodge (and room for more, by the way!) as well as many in the surrounding countryside. Even if you choose to only hunt the temps you “happen to be walking by”, you will still have plenty of caches to find.

    Excellent work, Jeremy!

    Just a reminder that the attribute is actually “Available in Winter”, not “Winter Friendly”. Many interpret this to mean “The Park is not closed in the winter, so come and try to find my film can lying on the ground in the middle of a field under 3 feet of snow and ice.” (I know, I have the DNFs to prove it!)

    You can use both. In fact, my broker’s website just sucks wind on Firefox, but works great in IE, so I am often running both browsers at the same time. Also, with Firefox, you can install an add-in that lets you use IE to display certain websites within Firefox. I don’t bother with this for the brokerage, but Microsoft Mappoint links point to Live Local when accessed by IE, so I have that website set up as an “IE display site” within Firefox. Once you are running Firefox, you can get the “IE Tab” extension here.

    Actually I did a test and it is not locking up on IE7. It just takes roughly 24 minutes to load all the stuff from Google. By contrast, Firefox takes around 10 seconds. Of course, speed isn’t everything. With IE, you get all the advanced security features missing in those other browsers….

    For all you IE users, since you refuse to use a decent browser, I put together a reduced bandwidth version for you. Actually it has all the same info as the other map, but it uses icons loaded from my server instead of Google’s server and uses something called clusters to reduce the amount of graphics on any given page. When you load this map, cache dense areas will have a large compass rose symbol instead of the individual caches. As you zoom in, the individual caches will be displayed. This reduces the overall amount of graphic data transported over the network on any given view.

    Before I give you the link, note that this page will take a MINIMUM of 4 minutes to load using an IE browser (approximately 5 seconds using Firefox.) Do not attempt to load this in IE while running Outlook or other mail clients, other browsers, front ends for external databases, or any other program which regularly polls your network. (All this is ok when loading it with Firefox.) Start the download and then WAIT. Do not touch anything until it finally loads. DO NOT attempt to use this with a dial up connection and IE. (Even Firefox doesn’t handle this real well; it is just too much data.)

    The new file is located at this site.

    Note that users of other browsers may like this version better as well. The cluster concept is pretty neat and reduces map clutter, plus the homebrew icons are bigger and a little more informative.

    One other thing for you GSAK users: if you want to make maps like this, you need the MyGME3.0 macro for GSAK. You can get it here. If you don’t know how to use macros in GSAK, PM or email me and I will walk you through it.

    I just fixed the Stay and Play coordinates based on your log. I wouldn’t expect these tourist bureau types to be keeping a close eye on things like this, so I’ll give them a bit of help. I’m sure the Minocqua subdivision crowd will appreciate it.

    Actually, it works well on every browser I have tested except IE 6.0. (Even IE 5 and 7 seem to work.) Of course, on dialup, there is a whole lot of data being pumped from Google Maps, so it will take a while. If you have IE 6.0, I have one suggestion: GET THE FREE UPGRADE! (or switch to Firefox, much faster, more extensible, and generally more robust!) Of course, if you are downloading IE on dialup, you probably need to start it and then come back the next day to install it.

    If you are running Inept Explorer, it will take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time to load.

    OK, for those waiting for a map with baited breath, here it is:

    Lonely Cache Map

    I’m glad I reused the same filename!

    OK, OK, Here is your map:

    Lonely Cache Map

    Note that two caches (There’s No Place Like H.O.M.E. and WSQ Winchester 175) were deleted from the list as they were found right at the end of February.

    #41? Is there an indication somewhere in the profile of how old your ID is? If so, I never knew this.

    Ken, if you have cachers on your Friends list, it orders them by date of registration with GC.com. It gives their start dates, but not their numbers. The numbers you can find thru a listing on GSAK (Owner ID field).

    Or, if you don’t like GSAK, just go to the persons profile and “hover” the mouse pointer over the link called “See the forum posts of this user” and read the link in the status bar. The id number is at the end of the link, reading something like:

    http://forums.groundspeak.com/gc/index.php?act=Search&CODE=getalluser&mid=4841

    kbraband = 4841
    Active2gether = 125484
    IowaAdmin = 185806

    Also, if you go by the “listed” dates, Ken has one of the oldest events in the database. It appears he was going to have a Fourth of July 2002 Picnic at his home in West Allis(?), but somehow he changed the date to take it off the calendar and it is now listed as occurring on 1/1/2000, well before the start of the website. How do I know this? The archived listing pops up on my list every time I review a cache in this area.

    Uh, Dave, isn’t the event on FRIDAY, as indicated on the cache page? (he says with fingers crossed…..)

    After getting more feedback than I could have hoped for, I added modified the rules slightly to make them more clear and correct the situation with “unnecessary” revisits. I simply modified the clarification (section 12d) to read as follows:

    d. A cache cannot be confirmed (either way) after a find, a confirmation note, an enable note, or an owner maintenance visit log is posted during the 2 month period, unless there is a subsequent DNF. If the last log on a cache is an confirmation note, it cannot be confirmed again, regardless of how long ago it was found.

    I received mixed feedback with regard to counting both DNFs and finds from the same person, so I left that as it was, meaning you can log both a DNF and a find on the same cache.

    They might have meant 500 “oldest” as in haven’t been found in the longest amount of time. Not oldest as in placed the earliest. A better word could be “lonliest”

    At least that is how I interpreted the comment…

    This would qualify a cache as being “lonely” and allow you to keep the returned list to 500 or whatever specific number you choose.

    That’s right, I meant the 500 loneliest caches. If a cache has been lonely for longer than the time frame looked at will it be in the list?

    I wish it were easy but it’s not. The easiest way (for YOU) is to use my bookmark list for the lonely cache game, which will show you all the caches not found since 8/31/07 as of January 1.

    What I am doing is running pocket queries of all the caches in the state and then sorting by last found date, then creating a bookmark list for the loneliest caches. Right now, this is 17 pocket queries and only includes caches placed before 11/12/07. Usually I have to tweak a few where none of the last 5 logs are “founds” (I have a macro to do most of the “tweaking”.) I also try to look for obviously missing caches (this is not so easy to determine) and “reviewer disable” them before making the final list.

    And right now, its looking like the date will be 9/16/07, so if a cache hadn’t been found since then, it will be on the March/April list. Like I said, there is no easy way to get this list, but I hope to have it public tomorrow.

    As an aside, if anyone owns a cache that they do NOT want on the list, even though it meets the criteria, please let me know and I will exclude it.
