Is there any way to just grab the oldest 500 regardless of how long they have been lonely?

Sure, just run a pocket query for all caches in Wisconsin placed before 8/25/03. Of course, this date will change as older caches are archived, but you can play with the Pocket Queries to find the exact date at any given time.

Perhaps some day you could throw together a list for a month that is not in fact lonely but fits some other characteristic but still have “the game” applied to it… like for instance, make a list of all puzzle caches with a difficulty rating greater than 3.

While tar and feathers are somewhat hard to come by these days, I suspect that many of your fellow cachers would go out of their way to obtain some if I implemented your suggestion, cheeto.

Your questions are opposite ends of the spectrum. For boat launches, most have signage of some kind, and are USUALLY owned by either the DNR or County Parks boards. If there is no sign, you probably will need to check a plat book/GIS site or talk to the county parks commissioner who almost certainly knows.

Guardrails/dead ends are more difficult. Some are DOT, some are county road departments, city road departments, private property, you name it. If you want to get permission for these, start with the group responsible for the road.

Incidentally, in case you were confused by the cache page (like I was), the event is NOT in the middle of Michigan Avenue, regardless of where the coordinates are. A bit to the east of the listed coordinates is the Chicago Garmin Store. That is location for the event!

Nope, I go to where my Garmin GPS takes me. I will be standing proudly in the middle of Michigan Avenue. 😆

Well the good news is that the location appears to be in a crosswalk, so you are a little less likely to get run over by a bus. Say only a 99% chance instead of the 100% chance in the middle of the block. By the way, I think you should buy your new GPS and then hand it to me while you go to “attend” the event. 😈

    Why, yes it is!

I can assure you that they asked Groundspeak for permission before they submitted it to the site!

    Hi there!

You are on the right track, asking for permission first. Here are the requirements.

First, if you just want to place caches, this is not considered an “event” in geocaching terms. It is just a bunch of caches. This is not a problem, just a matter of definition. If you want to have a barbecue or other gathering to “launch” your new caches, THAT would be an event. The key is that an event has to be a “gathering of geocachers”.

Second, if you want to have caches/events to promote some specific charity, such as the volunteer fire department, you just need to get permission from geocaching.com. You can reach them at [email protected]. Be sure to discuss the merits of your plans and how it benefits the community and puts geocaching in a positive light in your area. Also be sure to explain what you are doing to solicit donations/fees so that they can judge whether they will allow it to be promoted on their site. I am assuming that you want to mention on the cache pages where your map can be purchased, that the proceeds go to the FD, all the good they do for the community, etc. Just tell them all that. If you want, you can build a sample cache page on the site to show them what you have in mind. Just be sure to uncheck the box saying that your cache is in place and ready for review.

Assuming they give you permission (I believe they will authorize this), then just submit your caches using the normal process, and include a note copying the email from Groundspeak, so that we know you have organized the permission. Becky or I will review your caches for the other guidelines, and, assuming everything is ok, publish them right away. If you need time to print up maps, brochures, etc., be sure to tell us so that we don’t publish the caches before you are ready.

As an aside, I’m not sure the map idea will work as a very good fundraiser, as people will not really need your map to find the caches. Instead, you might think of having a series of caches with a mystery final located at your fire station. You could put up a poster near the final soliciting donations for the FD, maybe with an ammo can or a boot to collect the donations. Alternatively, you might try linking up with your local chamber of commerce. They did a geocache promotion last summer, and might be willing to pay your group to organize the promotion for them this year.

Yes to the comments about middle schoolers as well!

This may or may not be the case, but if you have downloaded your waypoints from the computer to the GPSr, aren’t the waypoints already on the computer?

I suspect they are talking about waypoints they have measured in the field, and need to save so they don’t have to go out and measure them again. Just a guess….

    Mine is in.

in reply to: Opinions on difficulty ratings, please… #1884203

Because of the multi nature of the hide, you probably should give it a 2. Otherwise, the difficulty of the hide is just that. The terrain doesn’t matter. This is why MOST 5/5s which are not puzzles are not really 5/5. They are usually 1/5s, and occasionally 5/2s.

Congrats, but before you set your target on that particular knucklehead, just remember that quality trumps quantity every time.

When Geocaching.com barred Buxley’s from publishing their data, they started publishing their own similar maps. They eliminated these a few months ago due to lack of interest.

in reply to: How many caches in WI? #1884063

I do have a database of all caches placed on or before 9/23/07, so it is a little out of date. I show 1275 caches north of 44° 56′, which is roughly where 29 runs west of Wausau. I’m sure there are a quite few north of 29, but south this line in the eastern part of the state, particularly in Green Bay.
