I, too, am constantly surprised to find Park and Ride / Guardrail / Lamppost caches getting 10-100 times more visits than the many excellent caches in the state. I think this is a result of the focus people put on find statistics. I have come to the conclusion that a majority of geocachers actually prefer spending time in parking lots to spending time in the woods, prairies and marshes around the state. That’s OK, though. It just leaves more space in the woods for us!

As the oldest oldtimer geocacher in the WGA, I thought I was one of the few who held this “outdated” perception of what geocaching is all about. Thanks for posting this viewpoint.

This must make it much more difficult to be a reviewer than if you enjoyed park and grabs and other similar caches. I know I would have a hard time approving a wal-mart parking lot cache myself, but I guess you don’t really have much choice in the matter right now.

Hehe, its not difficult at all. I’ve probably approved 3 parking lot/guardrail micros for every “quality” hide. I’ve even found a couple guardrail micros that were notable. At least here the ratio is only 3:1. If you head south to Kentucky or Tennessee, you will find the ratio to be more like 20:1.

But, like Zuma, we try to find everything in our path, and find the guardrails along with the great caches. Monday is a great example. We were caching in Racine, trying to recover from a day of KM hiking. We did a three short fun hikes, a very nice cemetery cache, and DNFed a cache in a remediated chemical dump (my poor ankle wasn’t up to the terrain). But we also found a cache in a playground, which I would never have actively sought out, nor would I recommend it, except that it was “in our way”. Its just what we do. I’m just amazed when I open the log on a park and grab and find 200 sigs, where when I open the log on an Ice Age Trail cache active for the same period, I find 20 sigs. Just doesn’t make sense to me.

Maybe I just think differently than everyone else, but isn’t it easier just to go the main cache page and click “Bookmark this listing”?

It is outside of an extremely small town in north-western WI.

Those of us who live up here would still consider this southwest wisconsin. North doesn’t really start until Highway 29, and our friends to the north would say not until Highway 8 😉 .

We plan on hitting this one this weekend. But being a Bandits cache it’s bound to be good.

I understand that Cheezehead considers Northern Wisconsin to be anything north of Highway 2! 😆

I just did a test. When you save a GPX with Easy GPS, it loses the description, hint, state, and some other data. The issue is NOT your handheld. It appears to be a builtin limitation of EasyGPS.
Whadayawant for nothing?……..rubber biscuit! (Please ignore obscure cultural reference)

Based on this, I’d say stick with GSAK. Its well supported, extendable, and basically the gold standard. I only keep Easy GPS on my drive to help the newbies who aren’t sure they want to spend the money for GSAK. I never use it for anything for myself.

Another option might be ExpertGPS (EasyGPS’s big brother), but I can’t recommend this myself.

We’re thinking of going, but if you give yourself an hour to eat and then 15 minutes to drive to the park and get organized, that only gives you a half hour before sunset. I can tell you that, even if you find all the stages immediately (you won’t!), you can’t do Snake Bite in 1/2 hour. I would suggest that the 3rd and 5th stages would be very difficult to find after dark. My recommendation would be to find the Venturing cache and then drive over to the starting point for GITD2 (also the Snake Bite starting point) and go from there.

I suspect the earthcache people might be confused. I will check with Tie.

in reply to: Earth cache advice? #1877735

If you are placing an earthcache in an SNA, they contact Tie before approving the cache. Did you tell them you were placing a cache in an SNA? Otherwise, there should be no contact with us.

Is the fee for park entrance, or for “playing along”? Couldn’t we use those free passes we’ve gotten from the Fox 6 geocaches?… ❓

    Yes, and yes.

Just so you know, I don’t believe those caches such as “Four Windows” ever met the guidelines. The review process was pretty loose back then, but how someone missed that the cache was located at a latitude of 90°N with Germany as the country is beyond me. Now, the Maine cache, on the other hand, did meet the guidelines. It just suffered from the same issue as T&B’s adopted cache, that being that the question was too easy to answer without visiting the site. Apparently the owner decided to go with the flow and allow the armchair logging.

The only issue I can see with logging these is your own conscience.

in reply to: Geocaching maps #1878285

Well, it wasn’t exactly a test, at least not in the conventional sense. The new maps were part of a big upgrade. While there were no problems with the maps that I know of, there were other issues which cause the entire upgrade to be rolled back. Once they get all the problems fixed, I’m sure you will see those maps again.

As much as I like to promote GSAK myself, you can do this same thing with Easy GPS. Just load all the files into the program and then save as a GPX.

    Great job, John!

in reply to: New feature for additional waypoints #1878056

You can’t use a PQ. It only works when you download the individual GPX files. (I didn’t say it was useful, just trying to keep my mailbox from overflowing!)

Fortunately, state residency is not a legally protected class. Please understand that the issue is NOT Brett or any other individual. The organization was chartered and designed as an organization for the geocachers residing in the state of Wisconsin. Both Minnesota and Michigan have similar organizations designed to serve the residents of those states. Having this structure has worked remarkably well, as most of our dealing with the government have been at the state level, and local governments seem to have significant respect for a state-based organization as well. Anything we would do to diminish the state based “focus” of our organization will just serve to make things more difficult.
