Next year, I am lobbying for a 52 stage multi to cut down on my workload!

Uh, Zuma, THAT was not the kind of surprise John was talking about.

I also have caches that require you to “find” the logbook. In fact, my whole Riddler series is this way. Every cache is a puzzle you must solve, if you want to even get to the log. Simply finding the container on any of these caches, is not good enough to claim the find. I’ve had to delete a few logs on this series of caches, and none of those cachers have ever complained. Sort of like admitting guilt I suppose.

Don’t forget putting it back together (properly) too! I won’t mention any names here. I think that was the hardest part! 😳

Which is why I carry a toolkit, including screwdrivers, cold chisels, and a cutting/welding torch whenever I cache in Kenosha. Without the welder, I could never get them back together!

After an ill-fated caching trip where we had two groups miss each other at the meeting point, we now have a “You must provide your cell phone number to the other team members” rule for group caching trips. This way, you have a way to contact folks if you are running late, lost, changing starting point due to the initial target coming up missing, etc. This has the added benefits of “phone-a-friend”, social contacts, and ease of putting together THE NEXT caching trip.

I would say that most phone a friends happen at the point of giving up. 70% of the time, the result is that you find the cache isn’t there anymore, 20% you find you are completely at the wrong place (copied the coordinates wrong, solved the puzzle wrong, etc.), and 10% of the time, you discover just how bad of a geocacher you are.

Are you planning this for a Thursday or is this a typo?

    Woohoo! Great job, Dave!

I wouldn’t count on it. Mine has been dropped off a cliff (about 80 feet) onto rocks, slid down a sledding hill with the battery cover removed, sunk under 4 feet of water in Lake Michigan, and went flying off the roof of the car, not to mention being dropped about 100 times. Still works like a champ! Admittedly the Legends are a little more fragile with that “stick thingie”, but they are still pretty bulletproof.

We do not currently check for permits in Milwaukee County Parks. I hope to never have to check, but that is probably wishful thinking.

That said, if you want to get on their good side, take the time to complete and submit a permit request for your caches.

For us, geocaching is all about the place and the journey to the place, not the hide or the container. Micro, small, regular, large, regular, multi, mystery, virtual, pine tree, rock pile, hollow log, thorn thicket, knot hole or pile of sticks….its all good! The more interesting the place and the journey is, the better we like it. On the other hand, caches showcasing nothing but a dead end or a parking lot are quickly forgotten as a waste of time. Caches taking us to obnoxious places, such as dumps, piles of grass clippings, trash cans, dumpsters, and outhouses, are remembered with disdain for the hiders.

Just 2 for us. We found about 700 caches with our little yellow etrex before we upgraded to a 76Cx (at the time it was cheaper than the 60Cx on sale). We still have the etrex as a backup or for use as a training unit.

The reality is that they are too busy this time of year to do much of anything other than their normal role. The biggest issue seemed to be that they didn’t know how many caches were in their parks or where they were. They now receive weekly updates of new caches and archivals of the caches in their parks along with a spreadsheet and electronic map of all the caches, and, for now, that seems to be making them happy.

As far as negotiations go, several us have already commented on the proposed policies and they have agreed to revisit them, based on the comments. They have not asked us to check for permits on caches in their parks, nor have they asked for Boilerplate YET. My guess is that both of those will be a reality around Christmas, similar to the DNR. We suggested that a notification form instead of a permit would be preferred, but I think we will lose on that one. As far as the 3 year rule goes, I am guessing that will go away, and, quite frankly, I can’t imagine them enforcing it even if it doesn’t. (About the only person with enough records to enforce it is me, and I’m not volunteering!) On the other hand, I suspect there may be an additional rule regarding high difficulty hides in sensitive areas. As part of our comments about the 3 year rule, many of us explained that environmental damage tends to occur only when a cache is made very difficult to find in a sensitive area, and usually only in the first couple months that the cache is available. They may say that hides rated 3 star or higher will require special review. In my opinion, this shouldn’t be necessary, but we have all seen caches which resulted in damage when the sensitivity of the area was not considered when placing the hide. Note that this is also pretty unenforceable, but we can try. It is difficult for reviewers to recognize the sensitivity of areas from maps, but expect to get more scrutiny if you place a high difficulty hide in their parks.

In short, the policy is still a draft, so if you have comments, please send them to [email protected]. Posting them here is not likely to do much good.

There is a fine line with making it a GC event….we could have a GC event and then all just head over to the movie after the event…I’m fairly sure directly saying this is a GC event to see the movie would be prohibited.

Your way would work, Lostby. If geocachers were coordinating the showing as a private showing, that would also be ok. The problem would be if it was an “open to the public” showing, which would create “commercial content” issues. Assuming it is a public showing, the best bet would be to have a meet-n-greet before or after the film at a local establishment or someone’s home.

That mini-USB cable is a standard model. The same cable works for my GPS, Palm, and camera.
