You know, the simplest approach is to hit the Bing Maps link on the cache page, which provides the county and municipality (and even the state if you have problems with that!)
Let’s see. This is the guy who claimed to have permission for a cache in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Then a finder ended up in the back of a squad car. Great…..
It is unlikely that the new Oregon’s will support Wherigo. In fact, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was removed from existing units when the operating systems are upgraded. Since they have decided go to war against Groundspeak, and wherigo is a Groundspeak creation, they are trying to distance themselves as much as possible.
I’m not aware of any LaCrosse county ordinance prohibiting cameras on their lands. I don’t really see how any harm could be done with this, plus it seems like it isn’t camoed well enough, so it will probably disappear faster than the cache.
Thanks!
Write [email protected]. Assuming there are no logs on it, I believe they can reverse the activation.
Oh, I understand it’s not perfect. The alternative is for me to set up something like 150 auto-notifications for needs maintenance logs. (The maximum radius is under 50 miles, so I need about 16 to cover the state, and there are 10 cache types.) I wish I could just put a query on the “needs maintenance’ attribute, but most people clear the attribute after maintaining their caches.
Well, you told me everything except what I needed to know. I finally found the “Needs Maintenance” logs hiding as “unarchive”.
Any idea what log type was mapping to the Needs maintenance logs? It turns out that Temporary Disable logs were showing up as Needs Maintenance, so I’m assuming something else corresponds to the actual Needs Maintenance logs. By the way, the tracker seems to be working correctly now.
Except the choice is no longer in the menu….
Having gone to this area, I can tell you that the local caching scene is pretty dead. Most of the caches in the area were hidden long ago by visitors. That said, most of the caches in the park are virtuals, and most of those are worthwhile. Our MO was to go for a hiking virtual in the morning, drive around in the afternoon doing regular caches (lots of church caches and cemetery caches), and then finding a swimming hole late afternoon (try the river along the road entering the NP near Townsend.) I’d recommend staying somewhere other than Gatlinburg, as it is very commercial and not pleasant in my opinion.
Checking my favorites list, here are the caches I recommended:
GCM1QA
GCBBF8I’d also recommend the virtuals at Clingman’s Dome (a short, steep paved trail) and Grotto Falls (a 5.2 mile (round trip), moderate unpaved hike).
If you like day hiking, the following site will prove valuable:

12/10/2012 at 5:23 pm in reply to: Important Garmin Lesson: Don’t Update with out your Unlock #1934239The SD cards can be moved from unit to unit. That said, if you update your GPS, you should probably update your maps, which ends up costing the same (more or less) as just buying a new set. Also, don’t do what I did and buy a unit without checking whether it has an SD card slot. D’oh!
You should know that there used to be a feature on gc.com, where when a cache was archived, any travellers in that cache were automatically marked as missing. The problem was that the site posted notes to the bug, in the name of the person archiving the cache, that the item was marked missing. Apparently certain individuals were offended by the site posting notes in their name (note that this would always be the cache owner or a reviewer). Rather than fix it, the site just chose to eliminate the feature.
Are you certain it wasn’t a puzzle cache? There is one located in that park, but I don’t want to spoil the puzzle.
