I, for one, would be more likely to attend if a GPX of the caches were available. That said, since most (if not all) of the caches will be listed on gc.com, so generating a PQ of 500 caches, centered on Eau Claire, is going to bring in nearly all the caches we would need. I just checked (we have not finds in that area) and it will bring in everything in a 45 mile radius. Considering that you are putting 100 MORE caches in the area, querying for nearest 400 caches will get it down to a 30 mile radius. Is this going to be close enough?

Makes me glad I have my cheap Toyota pickup with a windshield made from recycled beer bottles.

You know, I actually do check when I swap out a log, just to see what is happening. I’ve had a bit of abuse from people logging from points unknown (Thats what I get for having caches with “Liar” in the title) and would just as soon not have my cache pages cluttered with a bunch of fake logs. That said, I don’t delete logs when someone says “I forgot my pen” or “My kids were so busy trading swag that we forgot to sign” or even “We found the container but couldn’t figure out how to open it” (an old-fashioned metal match case). If someone logs a find without signing and without posting some sort of excuse, I will usually email them, just to make sure they didn’t log the wrong cache. If its a mistake, I ask them to delete their log, but I don’t delete it for them.

In any event it will be interesting to see if the cache is still in the same place. If the can floats, it might be downstream in the Fox River by now. Hopefully the bush that was surrounding the can kept it from moving along.

I guess I will bring both the boat and the scuba gear to look for the cache. Till then, I have disabled it but hope to get it up and running as soon as possible.

Well, the good news is that there is not much current in a marsh. The bad news is that this cache was not really entangled in the bushes, at least when I found it. It was a good 6 feet from the nearest tree trunk. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was gone.

And, Jim, you are talking about the wrong Fox River.

You don’t need a boat for this one, just guts and gumption. I think the water is about 3.5′ deep there on the edge of Vernon Marsh.

in reply to: How many in a day? #1871711

You know, it’s funny. I think our top day is around 30, but, for me, those big number days are less memorable than days where we do something difficult. Saturday, we did 18 with a group, but most of the memories will come from hunting a very difficult puzzle based multi, another multi where we were splashing through a flooded area, a couple very difficult micros, and the event we attended after the hunt. Travel bug hotels, micros in lamposts, tupperwares under a pine tree, and other generic type of caches (we found all of these also) tend to get approached with a “Find it, log it, forget it” mentality, whether we intend to or not. Of course, the company present can make finding a very dull cache interesting, but a challenging, clever, or well placed cache is much more memorable.

I guess what I am trying to say is, while it is somewhat about the numbers, you won’t remember much about hunting a film can in a tree in a neighborhood park, even though you can knock out 3 or 4 of these in an hour. You will remember a 2 mile hike through a marsh, a 200 foot ascent up a pine tree, a diabolical micro that took 3 visits to find, a beautiful vista at the end of the long climb, or even a puzzle that took you a couple weeks to work out the solution. Don’t be afraid to attempt those 4 star difficulties or terrains. The numbers will take care of themselves.

OK, given that Bible Accuracy appears to be out of commission, we are going to move the start tomorrow to Lion of Biblical Proportions. Here is the new attack list. I will be emailing everyone who RSVPed, but if you didn’t RSVP, hopefully you will see this. I will post a note at the Biblical Accuracy parking, but if you don’t see it, sorry about that.

    Here is the attack list:
    Lion of Biblical Proportion GC1084V
Another walk in the park_17 GC105RE
Honey, I Shrunk The Cache! GCH10J
    Shakespeare Secrets: The Script GC10Y26
Bootlegger’s Stash GCFD22 (I already have the first 3 stages, so should be easy!)
Another walk in the Park_22 GC10HDM
    A Secure Park GC10WPQ
    Cachelight GC113N3
    Sussex Park and Walk GC11F3C
    Bug Line Mini-Drop GC10G0Q
    Bug Line Drop GC103M9
Bugline Trail – Dangle Berry GCXKV1
Bugline Trail – Cattail Swamp GCXKTZ
Hangin’ out in Lisbon Oaks GC10N16
    Emma’s First Micro GC11F36
    Eric’s Birthday Cache GC10V8B

See you all tomorrow! There is parking for the GC1084V to the NE of the first waypoint, which is where I will be at 11, but I will be looking toward the cache if you approach from the other direction.

Wow! That’s an ambitious list for one afternoon. Having found Lion of Biblical Proportions and gotten stuck on Bible Accuracy, I have a feeling those two will keep you busy for quite a while.

But my family may try to get out tomorrow and try again on Bible Accuracy. Maybe we’ll see you out there on the trail.

You are probably right, but my experience is that the number of people in a group exponentiallly increases the finding speed. One person gets stuck a lot, two people get stuck once in a while, three experienced cachers only get stuck on the really diabolical hides, and four or more, well, someone is going to turn over the right rock…

Plus, nobody says we HAVE to find all those caches. Its just a lot easier to find the closest one that nobody in the group has found before we get out on the trail. Otherwise, we are all dependent on our memories and when people name their caches names like “Another walk in the park 10”, its very difficult to remember which is which until you physically get there.

So, feel free to join us just to laugh at us for the first two waypoints of Bible Accuracy, then join in the fun. Hope to see you there!

OK, we now have 4 confirmeds (notmuch, knoffer, Sean Connery and us) and 3 maybes (Uncle Fun, Lost Boyscout and Green and Gold). I will redo the cache raids tonight in case anyone else confirms (probably around 10PM) with TWO lists, one for if the maybes show up and one for if they don’t (since Uncle Fun and Lost Boyscout together have found every cache within 10 miles of the starting point except the first two!)

And, thanks Ken for noticing the two new caches in Sussex. I have a new PQ coming which should have them, but Sussex is a little out of my notification range.

Hey, mud and water beat ice and snow anytime in my book. (Although last Sunday’s hiking through hip deep snow drifts in a tee shirt and jeans was pretty interesting!)

in reply to: SPRING Chippewa Valley Geocaching Event UPDATE #1769844

Kent, I think everyone really appreciates your work coordinating this event. It is really great that the vast majority of the caches will be listed. Great work and thanks for your efforts! We are definitely going to try to make it up there this year. Last year there was some big event going on when we wanted to travel, so we couldn’t get a campsite or room.

in reply to: Attention: Pizza Eaters! #1871198

OK, so far we have a yes from Notmuch and a maybe from Uncle Fun, Lost Boyscout, and Green and Gold.

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, this looks like a route that will work for a start, basically heading toward Sussex after picking up the two multis. Let me know if any of you have already found these. (And yes, Dave, we know you already found AWITP 17. Notmuch is telling me that we can’t leave New Berlin without finding this one. We are hoping you can expedite!)

You know, Marc and Ken, between the three of us, we could form an “illegitimate organization”. Maybe they wouldn’t notice the extra 2 letters.
