Ugh. Falls on my work weekend. It’s too bad because I’ve thought about doing this cache many times, and it’s been far, far too long since we’ve gotten together Marc. Nice to see you poke back in here and say hi.

Wow, another passing. David wasn’t somebody we had ever chanced to meet, but we spent a lot of time in the Portage area doing his caches. He had quite a few in the little rural cemeteries we love to visit and I really liked his Evil Monkey Visits the Power Plant by the Columbia Coal cooling ponds. He wasn’t a close friend, but he was part of my community, and I’m sorry to hear that it’s now smaller by one. Our thoughts go out to his family.

I’m sorry to hear of Ron’s passing. He made great caches that made great memories. Our community was only a part of his life, but he made many, many people happy among us, and there’s comfort to be found in that.

in reply to: We say goodbye to Linda Fawn, a SE WI geocacher #1972367

I don’t believe we ever had a chance to meet Linda Fawn, but she’s been a part of our little community for several years and we’ve even been privileged to find a few of her caches. Our thoughts go out to her family. I hope the beauty of their memories salve the pain of their loss.

in reply to: Who completed all of the 31 days of Geocaching? #1971989

We were able to complete it, finishing in style with several paddle caches. It was a lot of fun, more than doubled our previous streak, and gave me a reason to look at our souvenirs. If Groundspeak has found a way to get more value out of an overlooked feature then more power to them. I am surprised at all the angst and outright distaste. Souvenirs are almost by definition the cheap garbage scavenged off the gift shop shelf as we pass in or out of some amazing place. I’m not sure why anyone would feel that they are being robbed of an experience by the expansion of souvenirs. But, we all play differently, so seek your muse. I have 8) .

Wildcat’s a great place! My first visit was while the missus was still finishing her degree, and I was caching alone in the winter with the snow coming down hard. Real hard. I couldn’t get my little Pontiac Sunfire up the entrance road and had to settle for just one cache that wasn’t accessed from the top. One of the old Cat caches.

Heh, heh. At risk of hijacking the thread, we’ve cached in Fulton as well. We stopped and did a handful near and in Heritage Canyon, which was not what we expected, but really interesting. We took a long weekend and followed the Mississippi from Dubuque down to the Missouri border and back up the Illinois side. Pretty, but we still love the Wisconsin stretch of the Mississippi best.

in reply to: your #2 caching state #1971476

Minnesota would be our second with 1777 finds to date. Somehow caching out of state never gets old. Even guardrail finds are more interesting when the scenery is different than home.

I guess we’re going to give it a try. We’ve been in a bit of a caching lull (with some notable exceptions), so this might be just the thing to break us out of our shell. Our longest streaks have always been just the long week of a family vacation, so this should be fun. A bit of planning too, as there aren’t really enough caches in Stevens Point to sustain a streak.

If they are going to begin to expand upon souvenirs I look forward to seeing what happens. It would be nice to see it expand so that everyone can have fun with it, not just inveterate travelers. I guess I have spent less than five minutes looking at our souvenirs since their inception, so maybe this will move the needle.

As for making souvenirs meaningless, weren’t they before 😉 ? I checked our souvenir count to qualify for some challenge caches over by Eau Claire, and wouldn’t it be nice if some of the locals could log those by doing some dedicated caching instead of having to spend thousands of dollars to add to their states and countries?

in reply to: Looking to adopt out some of the TOTS caches #1970884

Glad to see these going to new homes. We have spent some nice days in the past wandering the Trail of the Serpent and would hate to see them go. Seems like its been a long time.

in reply to: DeLorme Challenge gets little love these days? #1970736

I’ll have to agree that something of the tone of the game has changed. For us it has (almost) always been about exploration and what’s around the next corner. The DeLorme has of course suited me perfectly in that respect, though we do have yet to complete the Part Deux (bought the atlas though).

I think perhaps the classic challenges have suffered a bit as less demanding challenges offer seemingly the same rewards. Still a smiley, still a question mark, still an interesting combination for those who like to fill their grids, and certainly not requiring multiple road trips to areas that for many would never be considered destinations.

The journey IS the destination though, and I hope people aren’t missing out on some of the wonders out there by staying close to home. One less dinner out equals one more tank of gas. There are waterfalls, wild rivers, towering cliffs and sweeping vistas to be found in that next county, next DeLorme page and next Fizzy grid!

Like others have said, those challenges have led to discoveries and we continue to visit some of the remarkable places they have taken us, even in other states.

Great choice for a milestone guys! Been there pre-caching, will have to get back. Hope you had fun.

Work covers my Saturday, though we may be interested if anyone would want to team up on Sunday. Any others?

in reply to: SIGN THE LOG #1967397

I’ve had friends laugh as I sign a wet, sodden, frozen mess. Will it be legible? No, but I will be able to say that I did in fact sign the log.

In the balance, I think many of us have found broken containers due to freezing and the cache owner would probably have been just as happy if those finders had waved their hand over it and walked away.

in reply to: Archiving a virtual #1967426

The cache in question was our first virtual, way back in 2005, and I believe even at that time our email bounced back or was unable to be sent due to an unverified address. I am sorry to see it go, like any virtual. We’ll go check out the new puzzle though!
