Where Zuma goes we’re not far behind, or ahead depending on the timing. We passed 5,000 on 9/16 and 5,500 on 11/12, and we’re at 8,143 now. So, I guess we’re at around 3,000 for the year too. Saw a lot of our beautiful country in that time too.
Everyone will get something different out of their visit to a graveyard. From the caching perspective, some will go into that cemetery looking just for the smiley, get it and leave. Others will point out stones attractive to them, others are interested in the bronze plaques of the newer veterans, some like the originality of the new engraving styles. My area of interest is the distinctive Civil War markers, and I always scan for them as I get out of the car, noting important units and days of death signifying particular battles. It’s interesting to see veterans from every state of the Union interred on Wisconsin soil, and every once in a while a Confederate veteran.
My point is that there’s a lot to see in the cemeteries if you look for it. Some will not see it because it’s uninteresting to them, which is fair. We can’t all be the same. Some want that find and that’s it. Some consider our presence in the cemeteries an abomination in and of itself, though they have not made their voices strongly heard.
As for pictures, I’ve never thought much about it from the perspective that it’s wrong. The ones that interest me are almost the stone equivalent of historical documents. At some point, the family fades and all that’s left to remember someone is that stone and those who see it. I personally do not know where my great grandparents are buried. As time passes markers become orphans, without a family. I feel that the visits of people like us and of course the geneologists bring life back to these country plots. Pictures highlight something others may want to see, and maybe when they arrive they will find something that piques their interest as well. We have a great history in our own neighborhoods and townships if we take the time to look.
I’m not going to be silly and say that I have a profound experience every time I visit, but I almost always do the scan to see what I can see. There have been a couple moments though. I’ve placed a cache bringing you to the marker of a soldier fallen at Gettysburg. The marker is just the standard name and unit marker, with nothing to offer a clue except the date and a knowledge of the unit. Standing at that marker gives me the cold pricklies. I’ve read about his unit and the sacrifices they made on that battlefield, and I’ve stood in the place where that sacrifice was made while on vacation. That’s what I’m looking for when I scan the stones.
I’ll add to the thanks. I should have thought of writing something like this, as we try to do the theme trips from time to time. We had thought about the mother road a couple of times but back-burnered it. It might have moved up on the list after your stories!
Yup, they’s borked. There’s a gripe thread on the GC.com forums under the website forum. Lots of ornery Geocoinfest travellers. The little bit of response from Groundspeak implies that the server is backlogged and that it’s just going to take time. Sigh.
Heh, heh. I’m just happy to see you didn’t lap me as badly as I expected… Robin must have had you on a pretty tight leash 😉 . Talk soon my friend, can’t wait to hear the stories.

Memories ……….
Wow, thanks for the stroll down memory lane Marc. My grandmother was losing her battle with cancer at the time and I’d head to Green Bay every weekend (I was her favorite and she was mine). When we needed a breather and/or some lunch we’d head off for a couple caches to clear our heads and some nice strolls in the Green Bay parks were just the ticket. The N.E.W. Solar System was a great series, and Jupiter, Saturn and Mars are still on our Highlights bookmark list even after thousands of caches. We were really proud of that first milestone, and it was a real thrill to see it posted here. Tiny acorns grow into mighty oaks!
Another thought would be bundling the Cache Rescue into the Lonely Cache Game, offering points for picking up archived caches? I’ll confess I haven’t logged any points in the game, but I have visited some of them while they were on the list.
Hey, thanks everyone. The extended family we’ve found in the geocaching community is one of the big things that keeps it continually fresh. The real milestones are all the miles we’ve hiked with you. If you go caching the numbers find a way of coming along.
As for Noah being a secret weapon, all I can say is that he is definitely versed in biological warfare, and many a parking lot garbage can has felt his wrath 😉 . It has definitely been a new challenge caching with him, but the rewards are a multiplicity. Just having him in the chest harness when we pass under the tree canopy and he immediately is transfixed by the patterns of the leaves overhead? That really is priceless.
Look forward to seeing all of you guys again soon!
Congratulations guys 😀 ! Nice to see the schedule is allowing time again. Time to share the trails again soon?
That was a really fun puzzle. Glad to see you chose a nice one for the milestone. Maybe we’ll meet on the trail someday?

Gold or Platnium??
Gold was for #5000 so I guess it will have to be PLATNUM
When THB beats me to 10,000 some time next summer, I was thinking of platinum.

Blah, blah, blah 😉 … We’ve discussed this, and I do believe we may meet each other again at that milestone. May be time to pick a special cache for a milestone?

That could be a lot of fun! I’d be game to place something. Not that we need incentive, but it would give people a new option for traveling around the state after completing challenges like DeLorme or Counties.
What would we be wanted for? Hmmmm. Left ourselves wide open here.
This could even be done regionally….you know, you have to round up whole gangs, with there being several gangs statewide. Possibly with regional finals and a centrally located Final Final where you would round up THE BOSS.
That has a little bit of the flavor of the MN State Park Challenge. If you complete a geographical quarter of the parks you’ve attained one level, and there’s another if you complete the whole enchilada.
I’ve talked with Zuma about this being a fun idea to steal for Wisconsin. There are at least several state parks I haven’t been to.
All are lost who wander not?

Could be some competition for Noah!
Congrats on the little one LostMom/LostDad and GrannyGoesAlong
That’s right! I think Noah snagged his first cache on the way home from the hospital…..
Indeed he did. And then the Bandits, being their cache retrieved the cache container and made us a beautiful shadowbox with the original film can and log sheet along with pictures and the cache page print-out. Far too cool.
I don’t even want to guess the miles our little tyker has logged in the chest harness already.
And a great big congratulations from us as well! Caching with the little one is a new logistical challenge, but the way they look around at everything and enjoy the time with you is priceless.
We’ve hit just pieces of the old route in Illinois, Missouri and Texas. There are some really nice caches tied in here and there. I’ll be reading every post 8) . Have a great time!
