Something is going on over at the opencaching site…there is now a badgerish looking blue mascot on the page.

I think his name is Blue BuckTooth Bobby. And he’s mighty creepy looking (IMHO).

I finally succumbed to temptation and clicked on the linky… Is this supposed to be building anticipation? Even a basic premise would offer something to be curious about. I’ve been a loyal Garmin user from the outset, but they shouldn’t mistake my loyalty for a desire to replace a quality product with an untested and unknown quantity.

I’ve actually discussed this while caching with friends, and I’m most curious as to how a different site will improve on the fundamental idea of listing boxes placed at coordinates. I guess some yearn for freedom of expression, but the vast majority of hides on any site will remain traditionals.

Even so, competition will only improve the site that I will remain loyal to.

I know at least one team has had a cache swing back and forth with the seasons, and finally got things lined up to get the WRC when the stars aligned, before it swung back again.

Guilty as charged… and maddening! Doubly so, because I had to replace that cache with a new one in my D/T bookmark so we could be of the right age well-rounded year round. The cache in question is Tischer Creek Cache, GCMRQH. The cache owner religiously changes it from 5/3.5 to 5/4.5 every winter. I really wish he wouldn’t, because this is an incredibly good cache in a beautiful place. But, we just sucked it up and found another that won’t change (hopefully). It’s part of the game chasing the D/T grid.

As an aside, I disagree with people dimissing the hard water walking that takes place every winter for those T5s. TBC was eye-witness to me taking a swamp water fart bath for one of Mathman’s caches last winter, and thought perhaps the world would be less a Honeybunny. I’ve walked on ice where water was oozing through, I’ve manufactured log ladders and scuttled across on my belly, and I’ve been within feet of open water making retrieves. Far, far more objective hazard than paddling a perfectly good canoe to an easy retrieve. I’ve also taken the smiley on island caches that I drove to. It’s a mixed bag for sure, but don’t assume it’s easier.

I don’t see any reason why we can’t incorporate those. At some point a couple years ago at least one Navicache was nominated. It’s going to require a few votes to make it a more pointed issue though. I had looked at navicaching and terracaching back in the day, but can honestly say I haven’t so much as clicked on an opencaching link. The vast majority are probably of the same mind as myself though and don’t really care if the neighbor’s grass is greener because the yard is so small.

I say go for it if you like and if enough other people try opencaching to garner some votes? Even better.

I’d really have to hunt to find the listing again, but while Zuma and I were over in Michigan last time, we saw a cache in the Grand Rapids area that required you to progressively find one mystery cache the first day, two the second, three the third, etc. for six days in a row, each day with an increasing number of minimum difficulty and terrain stars. “The Devil Made Me Do It” or some such. I knew I didn’t qualify for that one for sure, so we drove on by.

We have a good variety of challenge caches in this state, but there are quite a few bizarro ones across our neighbors’ borders.

Thanks for riding range Dave. Out here in the provinces we kind of forget that a lot of the prototypes for geocaching policy are being built down in the SE corner of the state. Plenty of land managers of all types pay attention to the plans that others have already developed.

Congratulations to all who helped. Discussed this one with Zuma the weekend before, but I was in the trenches at work during this one. Thanks to all who gave time to the WGA and the cleanup!

Congrats Shane! Glad the whole family is having fun out there.

Yeah, what he said 😉 . I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to sufficiently explain this obsession to anyone else, but I do appreciate the kudos. Get out and see the world, it’s a beautiful place!

Wow, great cache for the big milestone! Team Family Affair puts out some good ones. Must have been incredibly satisfying to take a classic cache off of the DNF list. Looking forward to seeing you on the trails again soon.

I’d love to see a moose in the wild in Wisconsin. Our only encounters have been in Montana and Wyoming.

in reply to: Team Honeybunnies stop for bismarcks and a DeLorme #1935956

Thanks everyone! Like I’ve said before, the DeLorme is a great way to see the real America. It’s always fun to be in far-flung parts of the country and see the names of friends and acquaintances in the logs too. We ran into Timberline Echoes’ name in the logs in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and North Dakota on this particular run.

Most especially a hearty thank you to those who spent the day, and manned or womaned those mid-day hours when there are few cachers actually lurking on the grounds. We were blessed with quite a few volunteers who spent time at the booth. Thank you all, ya done good.

I will of course be there for the entirety of the breakfast on Sunday, and Saturday my preference is to be available for whatever time slot needs the most love. Things will be a little more concrete Saturday morning. Could even see helping with the newcomers class if we’re shy there.

Count on the handsome half of the Honeybunnies for sure, start to finish.
