Tim, this is one I’ve been thinking on for a while: GC1G4QP. About 3 miles on snowshoes, and the prerequisite terrain and scenic beauty. All we need are a few more victims, ah, er… volunteers ;). I know Benny wouldn’t mind a rematch. Takers?
Congratulations guys! Caching only gets better post-matrimony. It’s possible that the rings improve reception 😉 .
Okay, I’m a definite for the 27th. Would love to carpool and catch some caches before and after. Brian, if you’re reading this drop me a line, otherwise I’ll be in touch after work ;).
I’m in for this one one way or another. I’ll have to see if your chosen day works for me, but I’d love to. If we’re voting on days, Sundays work best for me. Pretty much an 8 to 5er. I was always surprised you had to turn back on this one as I consider you to be pretty determined. Must have been a real experience! The best kind…
Looks like we’ll have quite a gang. Maybe we can menace little old ladies in the street ;). We’ll see everybody there. We’ll start at three, but it should be easy to catch up if you’re running behind.

Can anyone post a short definition of what wherigo is? From what I have gathered reading the forums, is it some kind of geocache that uses a specific type of GPSr?
Or if it is too complicated to explain briefly, is there a website that is a good resource about it?
Basically a Wherigo is a virtual game that’s played out in the real, three-dimensional world. So rather than interact with objects and characters solely on a computer screen, you interact with those things that exist virtually at various real locations. i.e., rather than use your mouse to scroll to an area on your screen that contains an object, you might physically walk to a set of coordiantes or a set distance to “find” the object.
That means you need a device that can play a Wherigo game (a game is called a “cartridge” even though it’s not a physical cartridge). Those devices are currently Pocket PCs and a handful of Garmin GPSrs, although I have heard that Garmin is not building Wherigo support into its next models. 😯 .
A Wherigo geocache also involves a cache as part of the game. Typically after you complete the game, you get the coordinates to find the physical cache. Not all Wherigo games involve geocaches, and the “play anywhere” games on the Wherigo site are a good place to start.
I still think this concept is pretty high on the dork-o-meter but the kids get a bang out of them. It’s a little extra wrinkle to the game.
Perhaps as the game evolves it will become more than just completing virtual tasks in the field. I could see it having a natural application for puzzles where you need to physically visit locations in order to obtain the information rather than just Googling it. But I digress…
Pretty well sums it up, nice definition. Looks like we just might have a second enabled device if Benny can make it, and did I hear that Marc has one now too? Just make sure to go to the Wherigo site and download the cartridge as it’s not built into the cache description or in the pocket query. One at a time at this point.
My fear with Wherigo is that the learning curve to program the cartridges is so high that the novelty will wear off before it becomes well established. Especially at historic sites I think there could be a lot of mileage in a GPSr tour guide.
While it may not be warm, it should be dry, and everyone’s welcome. Hope to see you there!
Benny, I just manually delete that file out of the unit when I’m about to load new caches. Just click on the Oregon as a drive and go into the appropriate folder and delete just the recent finds folder. Probably don’t have to, but for whatever reason I do.
Congratulations!
I can’t recall the name, but do the virtual that follows the shore path from the public beach. A couple miles of walking along the shore with quite a few impressive homes along the way.
We too had the pleasure of meeting him at a couple events. I think the first time at the Geocoinfest multi-event in Kenosha. Our hearts go out to you as well.
Congrats from the three of us as well. We really should have gotten together for that run… Noah was feeling a ton better and was full of wee & vinegar 😉 . Ended up doing a short day and then Noah couched it with Dad during the game.
heh, heh 😆 . Too funny guys. Thanks to the magic of the iPhone and the interwebs, Marie was posting finds for him while Dad did the driving. Noah was mostly looking cute. I’ll be posting those finds tonight, never fear.
Nice job Jeremy. I’ll have to see if I can add some pics as well. Maybe some blackmail shots of Zuma on our various adventures… 😉 .
If the dates work out you can include a Rear Admiral Honeybunny… Lots of other irons in the fire though. It’s been a while.
They named a coffee shop after me? Too cool! Save the event for winter Gwyn, when those caches are harder to come by and your attendance will improve. The weather’s still too nice to be cooped up inside.
