I was just going to ask for the report, as I dont get the best coverage for the area, being from Iowa. Thanks for the good news!
Being an out-of-state member, I dont get any other chance ot meet and form friendships with the awesome group of cachers from Wisconsin. I would really be disappointed if the upload is ever changed for the events put on by the WGA.
I have attended the first 2 Campouts and last years picnic, and will be bringing a couple of other Iowa cachers along to this years Picnic. I’ve got pictures of cachers in the woods, but the best Pictures and memories seem to come from the morning activities of loading the info and froming a quick plan of attack. The excitement level is at a peak, and everyone is ready to go.
I am currently involved in froming a group similar to the one wisconsin has formed, and many of the ideas I suggest are born in some manor from the practices of this group.
If the practice of early release is ever undertaken I think a document could be drafted that you would have to identify yourself to gain access to. This would cover the act of agreeing to the disclaimer protecting the WGA.
Can’t wait for the event.
Team Kilroy was here!A group of Iowa Cachers will be camping at the KOA just north of Madison, on fri & sat nights. Unless there is a better recommendation for us we can still change our reservation.
We would like to do some caching besides just the picnic.
What are some must do’s in the area?
Are there any Night Caches close by?
See you soon
Team Kilroy was here!Hi
I dont often log here as I live in Iowa, but grew-up in Wisc and still call it home.
I also have cached with many of you at the 2002 & 2003 Camp-outs and the 2003 picnic. I must say those are some of my top Geocaching memories, and I was sad to not be able to attend this years camp-out.
To get on topic, I totally agree with alot of what is being said here, and disagree with alot of the rest. I have found a way that works for me to make the [so called Lame] Caches more interesting. I go to Buxley’s Maps, Click on a cache in the center of an area I plan to cache in, then scroll down to the find near-by caches link. I then choose all the Traditional Caches that I have not found, and download the Coords only [Never look at the cache page] and set out looking for the caches. Then if they are truly lame they will have had an extra element of difficulty added to them. I usually find about 90% this way and the others are saved for another day of usually much more difficult caches, that I then take the cache info with me. This method seems to keep the anxiety level up a bit, which makes for a more exciting day, and no cache is ever lame. This sounds like lots of fun, and I would like to participate, but coming from central Iowa in winter is not likely.
That said I think if you posted maybe three sets of coords at each location teams would have to choose which direction to go, and the team with the best choices would have the best chances of winning, while spliting up the group into any number of directions.
Maybe some of the coords could be just a dead-end and not adding to the final solution, giving other teams a chance to catch-up.
Hope you come up with a fun game, I’ll be watching for the results.
Team Kilroy was here!I have liked this idea from the start. True you do spend a lot of time in transit too & from the mothership, but its not a race, and the time at the mothership is well spent getting to know other cachers.
I am in the process of working out a “Make Your Own Event” cache, incorporating the mothership idea. I’ll place everything and instruct people to make up their own event cache inviting other cachers to join them in hunting the series. Then leaving everything for the next group to plan their event, of course hunting alone will be permitted but joining together will be encouraged.
Devils lake would be perfect for my “Base Camp/Mountian Top” idea, using famous mountians as the satelites. This would probably consist of smaller groups at the events solving many of the problems. I would probably change the locations every year to keep it fresh. What do you think?Congrats! We are having trouble getting to 100th much less even thinking about 700th.
Enjoyed seeing you at the Picnic and everyone else. Team Kilroy was here!We will be adding a Magellan Hat to the cache of prizes. Aquired from this summer’s treasure hunt. Drove to Minneapolis trying to find it early with only the clue’s. Had to leave before the coord’s were posted, but thanks to Geocacher RickRich of Mn. He was nice enough to send me a coupon for my troubles.

Kilroy was here!I’m not saying that this is a bad contest, I just hope Magellan reads what we as the Geocaching community are saying, and try to make this contest more fitting the ideals and expectations we Geocachers have come to expect. I’m not sure Magellan really knew what to expect from this experiment, but I’m hoping the results are better than they estimated and they decide to spend more money advertizing and supporting our sport to help it grow and gain acceptance.
Team Kilroy was here!I’ve been following this pretty closly, and have noticed some trends that I’m afraid will end up looking bad for Geocaching on a whole; for instance the latest cache on the west coast had people acting all crazy, the find in Chicago had them out racing through rush-hour traffic, the one in Georgia had them entering a National park when it is supposed to be closed and caching is not normally allowed. They may have some kind of agreement made but it is not encouraging use of common sense or courtesy.
I hope Magellan reads the logs that people have posted as many concerns have been mentioned and need to be addressed, or it may make a bad name for our sport.
Team Kilroy was here!It looks like a chance at the big prize my be comming our way. The only problem is it looks like it will end during the week, but just the same lets hope for a wisconsin placement. As I’m in iowa with little hope of a cache near me you will have about a 5hr head start on me, but I’ll be driving fast. Good luck to all, hope one of my Geocaching family or friends gets the FTF. Andy
Re: Parts. What brand/model PDA did you get? I have spare sync cables (not cradles) for the Palm Pilot/Palm III series, and possibly the Palm V series (I’d have to check on this one). I also have a junk drawer full of PDA “accessories” that might be of some use… styli, various covers, some Handspring modules, etc.
Sorry I forgot to say I got a Palm m125. Thanks for the quick response, I’ll get started with the links you provided.
[This message has been edited by jvechinski (edited 06-16-2003).][/B][/QUOTE]Forget all the progs at this point, I ordered a PDA from ebay and when it arrived I got no stand, no cable’s, no instructions, no drivers or anything. Does anyone have any old parts I could buy cheep. Once I can connect to my computer, then I’ll worry about the progs. Thanks Andy
I also use the Garmin GPS V, and did extensive research, before making a purchase I plan to keep for quite some time.
– If you plan to use your GPSr for Caching only I felt the Magellian Meridian was the best chioce hands down, but if you plan on using it for travel as well I felt the GPS V was a much better choice for several reasons.
1). The GPS V uses 4 batteries
2). It has a removable antenna, “did you know some new vehicles have a coating on the glass to block UV which also blocks GPS reception” rendering some GPSr’s usless in the car. For a few bucks you can buy a remote antenna for the GPS V.
3). Plus the data base that comes in the unit is cool.
4). I also liked the switchable screen from portrait to landscape, making it more readable from hiking to driving.
– The choices are so varied, I felt it is something you need to really think about how you are going to use it, before you can make an informed decission.
– Good luck
-Team Kilroy was here!We really liked the Mothership idea, and enjoyed the little time to socialize at the mothership that we had. We hunted it late in the day and had almost no waiting. We also met another team halfway to save on time as it was 4:30 and we did not want to miss the picture. I see no problem with this as long as you dont jump ahead of someone who started before you.
I feel a few more satelites would help, or maybe limiting the number of groups to the mothership at any one time, like 6 satelites and 8 groups to hunt them, possibly with a time limit, so all get a chance to attempt them.
All in all I feel this idea solved more problems than it created, for an event of this type. keep up the good work.
