Is anyone thinking of possibly attending this years event?

In full disclosure – I feel really bad here guys.

Someone from Michigan just pointed out to me that Survivor is on the same weekend as the Westbend event. I certainly don’t want to take you away from that but we would love to have anyone willing to brave the Michigan elements.

Very tempting, we’ll have to see how things transpire this summer. Thanks for the heads up!

Well, after (finally) meeting you last year I sure would love to chat some more.

I have definitely made some good friends from Wisconsin.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. I sure hope to see some of you for this years survivor event and if not perhaps another one in the years to come.

    Corrupted cartridge.

After having experienced this multiple times and almost on everyone of my cartridges I have learned how to go through the code line by line to see if I can fix it. Starting from scratch is NO fun. Done that too many times. No more!

I think 15 to 20 feet is fine.

I recommend no less than 100 feet. I’ve been burned real bad on a 15 feet one – mine! It had people leaning way over a wide creek on a cold February day just to get it to fire. Not fun. Having to walk in circles just getting the zone to fire is no fun either. That’s my general rule and what I always tell people unless you have a real specific reason to have something smaller.

the rule still would not fire until I got to the exact coordinates, even if the zone was supposedly a 60-foot circle.

Therefore I to set all the rules to fire “when a player is in proximity to the zone”–20 or 30 feet or whatever. This may just be a “Garmin thing.”

It is a known Garmin bug which is another reason why I don’t use anything smaller than 100 feet. It makes getting the unit to zero out much easier.

But getting it to work right is very important in my opinion, because it is very frustrating in the field to have to do the drunken bee dance to get to the exact zeroed-out coordinates before the rule fires off (unless that’s your intent to do so).

    Absolutely!

I have to travel like 60 miles for a whereigo, so as soon as I get to one, I will try it out.

There are some very fine Wherigos in Wisconsin after getting almost all of them as we drove through Wisconsin. Very much enjoyed finding them.

If you drive to West Michigan you’ll have your choice of probably 30+ Wherigo caches in one area.

I am available for questions if anyone has any.

I did host a Wherigo development event too this past year. It has been requested of me to do it again. Would anyone from Wisconsin actually travel to Grand Rapids for a day?

Have you tried to open the backup file (*.bkup)?

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten the backup file to work. If the main is corrupted so is the backup.

I constantly save my work. It’s not uncommon for me to have 30+ copies of the cartridge as I’ve been progressing while working on it.

Alex, You’re running on a Mac, right? I’m on a PC. For some unexplained reason, when I was trying to build mine, I’d be able to save my work, but then never be able open it up again. I’d get some conflict error about a 64 bit thing. I wonder if I used a Mac if I could get things to work out. GLS says his system runs on Vista also and he never got that message. Go figure..

Very common to the cartridge files to be corrupted. There is a patch for 64 bit. Some say it does make a difference.

Well this weekend is fast approaching. Hopefully I may see a few individuals from Wisconsin.

I know Michigan approached MiGO a couple of years ago when I was on MiGO’ EC about working with them to try and get at least one cache in each of Michigan’s Welcome Centers. Every rest stop is not a welcome center, but it is the same organization.

I didn’t know that…. the things you learn when you read another state’s forums!

    Dear Bob Spoerl:

My concern is related to the issue of the placement of geocaches within Wisconsin’s rest areas, and I am contacting you on behalf of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association. Our membership is very concerned that geocaches are not allowed in Wisconsin’s rest areas and note that geocaches are either allowed or encouraged in all other states except for Wisconsin.

Edited here to keep it short….

I would be very interested what type of response you get back from your elected officials.

Sounds like a good excuse for a roadtrip!

I would certainly love to see a group from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, or Ohio carpool together and show up. Find a cheap hotel or camp like I usually do when on a road trip. Make a weekend or a 4 day out of it.

There are also plenty of Wherigo caches in the West Michigan area for you to find too. I’ll bet its safe to say I’m sure there would be several cache owners who would love to go through the cartridge with you provided they had the time.

Thanks everyone for the great response! We’re up to 28 or so people watching the cache page which is yet again for this year a record!

I’m really hoping to see and meet a few of you guys!
