My daughter and I may be interested too. We love doing cache runs at big events. I believe we are camping right next to each other too.

My daughter has been collecting pathtags for about a year now. She has well over 500 different ones in her collection. We have only found a few in caches, Sammy Claws, Froggers and one at last years Cache Bash. She enjoys trading them online and in person at events. If you are going to be at the Happy Hollow event this weekend they will be there to see. This is very popular in Michigan and Indiana but it is gaining traction here. We put a few of our tags in caches we really enjoy and we have put a set of our tags in caches a FTF prizes.
We are also part of two “games” where we wait for a package of tags to arrive in the mail, trade for tags we are interested in and send the package off to the next person on the list. If you want anymore info feel free to ask my daughter via our email contact.

in reply to: Cache of the Month #1909998

We have very strong feelings about COTM. Last month, my daughter’s cache was nominated by a local cacher. She was very happy about being nominated by someone she had never met. At the same time she had a realization that she would probably never win because others did not know her as well as the oher cachers who were nominated. She looked at some of the other nominated caches and realizedthat there was open lobbying for one of them being done. She told me that she would never do that and as just going to be satisfied that she was nominated.

As the month progressed she got a few more unsolicitedemails telling her about how much they enjoyed her series, she still did not think she would get the votes. Imagine her surprise when she saw her cache at the top of the list in June. I can assure you that she did not seek any votes and it iscertainly not a popularity contest in her case. Those that voted for her cache actually did it and enjoyed it.

Yes, it is very flawed most of the time but in May I think it went the way it was intended to go.

“I also watch some puzzle caches I haven’t solved yet just in case some tidbit of info comes through on a recent found log.”

For a puzzle cache in our area this type of “Search and Destroy” method to trying to solve a puzzle will elicit condemnation from the owner and a public tongue lashing in the forums. Is it worth it to wait for these tidbits of information? Not here.

My daughter and I did 84 in Nashville by 5pm in the afternoon. We were averaging 8 per hour and if we did the 3 more hours of sunlight we had we would have had over 100 easily. Getting on each others nerves is what did us in.

in reply to: What’s the point of geocoins? #1909191

We started collecting coins that we enjoyed or that we earned in raffles or as FTF prizes. We always activated them and put them out to travel. We no longer do that anymore because of the rampant stealing of coins especially in this area. We are now into Pathtags for collecting as the trades only cost the price of a stamp or are fun face to face.

At any rate, what really sealed our decision about the coin issue was our recent trip to Geowoodstock. We went to the coin and pathtag trading event with about a dozen or so coins we still had left and all my daughter’s pathtags. The room was standing room only and we managed to find a table to sit at and spread out all our “stuff”. After about 10 minutes a couple from Texas sat across from us and opened a huge box full of coins and put up a sign that read ” Any coin $5″. They had at least 1000 or more coins. I looked through some of the coins and noticed some with holes or other markings on them. I memorized one of the tracking numbers and looked it up the next morning and it was registered to a cacher in Alabama. His business was brisk to say the least with many individuals looking for coins to complete series, etc. I remember hearing him tell some of the lookers that all the coins were unactivated.

in reply to: What is a "Logable Cache"? #1909105

While I personally do not subscribe to logging temporary caches anymore, I am a strong advocate of the cacher being able to “play” this game as they feel compelled to. Often times, individuals get too hung up on how a cache is found, solved, retrieved or logged by others rather than doing what personally gives them the most enjoyment. What I like most about this is how I choose to do it. I have friends that go only to caches to find trackables, I know people that do nothing but hide puzzle caches and I have met individuals that log temporary finds.

If you look at my daughter’s recent series of caches you will notice she allows for multiple logging of each of her stages “if you choose to do so” as it was always her intent to have 17 hides rather than the 5 GC.com approved. To date, about half the finders log all the stages and half log only the 4 multiple caches. Its their game, its their rules.

    Hummmmm……googly eyes….

Also, 2000 smiley face rings, 500 smiley face erasers and 1000 smiley face guys. I am planning a new cache…

    1000 Smley Face Bouncy Balls…

Here is my entry for Nuggets on he Trail #17 for May 3rd.

Disaster strikes! As I was riding along the trail next to the pond area a goose comes flying out of the reeds and hits me mid-flight. I tried to gain control of my bike but before I knew it I had flipped and end up on the ground and on the goose. The goose quickly took off back into the pond area as I lay bloodied by the whole incident. Looking back on it, I hope I did not hurt the goose but I believe landing on it prevented a much more serious injury than a few cuts and scrapes. I landed hard on my shoulder and the goose probably prevented further damage. So, what does one do when this happens? Wipe off the blood, try and rinse off with what is left of the water and move on to the last cache. It was a long ride back to the car. Oh, and thanks for the cache.

Would I have to put the “located on private property” disclaimer on this one?

We are camping as well. A WGA meetin’ area would be great.
