I know the hamster has been working diligently today on this, so the one must have been deleted before you got to it.Ā  It sounds like GS will be working to resolve this by next week some time, but I understand that some of the effected CO’s have been deleting these bogus logs on their own.Ā  That’s what I would have done had I been hit. . .that is unless Groundspeak got to it first.

I also have the eTrex 20, and was wondering about the 5,000 cache limit.Ā Ā Ā  I have several PQ’s that I normally run that have overlapping caches (i.e. the same cache being on both PQ’s), how does it count those caches?Ā  Does the eTrex recognize that it’s the same cache and count it just once, or does it count those cache once per PQ?

I was hoping to learn about GSAK, which I have here.Ā  It just seems like most everything that GSAK has to offer, I have without GSAK.Ā  The couple of extra features I’ve heard about here certainly aren’t worth the $30 they ask for.Ā  As far as downloading caches to my GPS, I just open up the associated ZIP folder and plug my GPS into my computer and drag the file from the ZIP folder right into the appropriate folder on my GPS.Ā  Trekkin’, you’re not the first cacher I’ve heard from to say that you can’t download PQ’s with GSAK, so that’s something that makes it worth it to you.Ā  As for the challenges I’m working on, I just keep track of those things manually.

One thing I don’t get is why cachers think they *have* to use GSAK to download pocket queries.Ā  I’ve been downloading pocket queries just fine without GSAK for years and I’ve been satisfied with the results.Ā  Is there something I don’t know that makes GSAK so special?Ā  That’s what I’d like to find out.

When I said about $30 a year, all the FAQ’s and other pages I see recommend buying a GC Premium Membership to be able to use GSAK.Ā  That’s on top of paying $30 for GSAK itself.

I looked at your stats, Happy Hodag, and you appear to be able to handle your current caching needs without GSAK. Because we have a Mac, which GSAK has no intention of developing a version for, and we don’t want to do all the workarounds to get our Mac to use GSAK, we have done without for almost eight years. There have been times when having some of GSAK’s bells and whistles would have been fun to play with, but for our normal caching use, we have been able to cobble together other methods to handle our laid-back caching style. I just wish it wasn’t assumed ā€œeveryone has GSAKā€. :?

I’m with you there.Ā  I didn’t even know there was such a program until about two years ago, and the research I did between then and now hasn’t shown me much of anything other than how redundant the program is.Ā  I’ve heard other arguments like needing GSAK to filter out caches that you own, I can do that without GSAK.Ā  Include or exclude certain attributes or cache type or difficulty or terrain ratings?Ā  I can do that without GSAK.Ā  Most of what I’ve heard here you can do without GSAK, and I’ve been doing things without GSAK for years.Ā  It’s not that I’m against such a third party program, but I’m just calling it like I see it.Ā  I actually want to learn more about GSAK, which is why I ask when I meet other cachers in person, and hence the reason for starting this thread as well.Ā  Based on what I’m hearing so far, I just can’t justify spending $30 on a third party program where I would have to pay $30 a year that I’m already spending just to duplicate what GC.com already provides me.Ā  That’s just me though, and I’m glad I’m not the only one out there.

Mass logging- you may not do it but it allows you to log 539 caches in 10 minutes or less. Also…writing my logs in one handy window and then clicking one button and having them uploaded, saves me from opening countless cache pages and the clicking log for the next page and the Submit to actually submit it. It gives me more time to actually write meaningful logs instead of web browsing for everything.

That may or may not come in handy for me depending on the situation, and even then it might be rare.

Sort and filter caches in the database. Have everything within 60 miles of home? Ok…but not interested in looking for those ā€œ?ā€ in Appleton then filter those out before you send the PQ to the GPS.

I can filter out all those pesky “?” caches without the services of GSAK.

Checking to see if you qualify for challenges (Busy Day, Delorme, Counties, WGA State Park Series…) Drop ā€œMy Findsā€ into the database and sort/find them anyway you want (i.e. 25 caches that start with WalkingAdventure).

I’m not all that into challenges, but this is good info in case that ever becomes a thing for me.Ā  BTW, I do have my eye on at least two at the moment.

Doing puzzles? Drop your corrected cords into GSAK along with notes on how you solved it.

I can do that directly to the cache page without the services of GSAK.

]The $30 is a one time fee. 10 years later I am still learning how to play with GSAK but I paid a 1 time fee. That’s cheaper than a premium membership or almost anything when prorated out. Excuse me, I was wrong-for major upgrades 8.xxx, 9.xxx, etc. , there is another fee but you can also add GSAK to several computers if you want for no additional price. Minor updates 8.x.1,8.x.5 etc. do not charge for updates.

That’s good to know about the $30 fee, but I think I’ll hold off a little to see what else might be out there on GSAK before I make that commitment.

I still haven’t heard anything new except about the map/list, that looks neat how you can see details about the caches without having to open each cache page.Ā  At least that’s what it looks like to me.

I don’t remember ever seeing that attribute, and I can only imagine what the grumble would be.Ā  I would think that this was a fairly recent grumble since you only placed Great Reception in May.Ā  That and the PUC cache are currently on my ignore list because they’re both beyond what I’m capable of doing to grab a cache, I know I can’t get them all.

Not sure how you missed Great Reception? Camo tape test tube up about 12 ft up the tree (1.5D/3T)

Could be the fact that it’s 12 feet up a tree.Ā  I exclude the tree climber attribute from my pocket queries, just sayin’.

WA, is that a hint on any of Team Northwoods, or any of yours?Ā  I seem to remember DNF’ing one of yours in/by/close to/in the general vicinity of High Cliff recently.

I’m safe so far. I don’t think I have seen any Hodagging found logs on my caches yet so have at it. If I do win an annual award someday I would like I to be a joyous affair with in which to accept such award and to give my speech of acceptance.

Should I go out of my way to find one of your caches now?Ā  I’m sure you hide what I might consider a plus 1 cache.

Probably my least favorite find was under a bridge, and the only way I could tell it was the cache was that someone had written “GEOCACHE” on the lid of the container.Ā  Otherwise it looked just like all the other garbage laying around.

I have two DNF’s yesterday, and the one that bothers me I don’t even remember the name.Ā  It will probably go on my ignore list sooner or later.Ā  I speak not of the tree climber.

That goes to show that the reviewers and lackeys really can’t verify whether or not the cache is truly there.Ā  I just wonder if the last finder was going off an old pocket query.
