I’s back (grins)… enjoyed this last trip out. It’s so nice to find geocaches again. And to find a surprising cache close to home.. it’s still stumping me.. but I’ll tackle that one again soon.

I was surprised that only a couple of the 100 caches I found.. pertained to historical sites.. I really was all worked up about learning on the way.. but I set up two around their backyard. We really have a great roadside manner as far as pointing out our history. LaSalle now means more to me than just a walk in the park. But it felt odd placing cache containers so far from home. But those that have done it were starving for caches to do.. they hit on them like locust (grins).. even invites to return to plant some more (chuckles)..

Now I’m plotting my next trip to GA / FL area.. will take me ages to print out all their sheets.. they really have alot of history..

I said I was semi-retired from caching in winter up here.. (grins).. not retired from caching. But there were some real nasty days I was in.. just glad to have missed the snows (grins)… I didn’t even bring boots.. just wore my famous, beatup tennies (grins)..

I bet you guys thought I was just sitting around this last week (grins).. actually I’m on another geo-trekkin’ adventure..
I decided to bust out of Wisconsin for a bit and head on over to meet a few geocachers. I’m making the rounds of Illinios, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virgina for a long week of geocaching.. (just hopping off of Interstate 80 on my way to PA)

Hopefully, upon my return trip.. I’ll meet up with my Ohio host (that reminds me of how Artophy torments us with his caches) BigDrano’s two caches just busted me the first go..so, I’ll make it a point to return that same way in hopes of actually finding them (grins).. Also, I’ll be stopping by the Michiana Area Geocache Picnic on Nov 9th to meet that crew.

Boy these guys in Pittsburgh really rate their cache terrains low (giggles) I’ve never been so tired doing 1/1’s before.. I kept teasing my Pittsburgh host ~ The Leprechauns ~ of how I’d love to see a wheelchair make it up those huge cliffs (grins).. Just think of our state’s “River Cache” rated a 1/1 and you’ll know what I’ve had to deal with (grins)or our “Devil’s Lake Revisited” with a smaller patch of boulders..

I have a new respect for Pittsburgh, this place reminds me so much of our La Crosse area.

I’ve also grabbed up about seven Travel Bugs that I’ll be bringing back to Wisconsin.. and will try to sprinkle some around Milwaukee on Monday, as I try to do a SE’ern caching day there.

I’ve done a few personal things I’m proud of.. please read my logs “Purgatory On A Stick (Michigan)” (felt sorry for all those NOTES and no LOGS so I proved how fearless us Wisconsinites can be) (grins).. and “Elves in the Heights (Pitts, Pennsylvania)” (had been informed that the best time to sign the log book was 1.5hrs..)

All in all.. I really miss our tricky caches and twisted humor.. no Nells tied to train tracks.. no silly hats to wear as I hunt down weasels.. no piles of crap to pick up.. no crypts to spook the life out of me..
You get the message.. I’m getting homesick..
(I’m sure they have their unique caches.. remember I’ve just traveled through on my way to get to Pittsburgh and just did a selective run of those I thought were a good relaxing time on the way)..

It sure is amazing to put on 1000 miles to get to Pitts.. caching along the way sure is a joy!! the miles just flew by.

(giggles) I don’t have to get a job..(grins) besides why use my adventures for a tax write off? (chuckles) or spend my ‘office’ time charting my finds (grins)..

I had the pleasure of writing to Bruce.. as well as questioning when he DOES work (smiles)… Nice guy.. give him a break..
He actually got stumped on one of mine.. even offered to sit at Dells of the Wisconsin River #1 and goat him on to victory (smiles).. love tagging along with geocachers that travel up to my neck of the woods.. this sport is great.. and gives this lil otter a chance to TALK alot instead of Type alot about caching.. (smiles)

And you all thought I had too much time on my hands…

I’m very impressed as well.. thank you, Ken and the other WGA’s, for all your hard work in representing us in these important issues.

I really enjoyed the area too.. just so you know.. it’s my 60th cache to find.. sorry that I beat you two (grins towards the Hotdogs)but I waited a couple days hoping you’d beat me to first finder..
    ~The Lil Otter

Well I did honestly wait a few days (7 days to be exact).. kept looking at that cache and hoping that the Hotdogs off trail would log it soon.. finally realized that they weren’t about to so I even wrote them.. (grins).. nothing worked so I had to go on the hunt.. didn’t realize that I beat them by a few hours til I read their log post (smiles).. each cache has a special memory for me.. but this one really was fun knowing that they called me sneaky (grins).. so cute..
~The Lil Otter (almost retired for the winter but will brave it tomorrow.. oops today.. tagging along with Miata on his hunting trip here in my neck of the woods)

(grins) I’ve only done up to 21 a day and that’s when it used to be light til 9:30pm.. I’ve been on the mutt mode til now because I was camping out in my van at Marshfield hospital this past week.. my father just had quad-bypass and is doing well. I had to come back home because I caught a cold and wouldn’t wish to pass it on to my dad.. those new caches I’ve put up were from last week before all this hit the fan. So don’t think I was out having fun (smiles).. it was a real nightmare at times. I was so tempted to do that Marshfield webcam cache.. but killing two birds with one stone sounded pretty sic to me (is teasing).. oh.. I have a great joke to tell about my playing Nurse to my father.. he was just out of surgery and started to cough so I was helping him hold his pillow on his chest.. he kept saying “it hurts it hurts” and I kept saying “I know it hurts.. I know it hurts” and I finally figured out he was saying “Nurse.. nurse” as in needing more help.. it wasn’t funny at the time but now I can look back and think of what others passing by must have thought.. me pushing a pillow over my father and I looking like I’m suffercating him or something .. he’s laughing about it now too.. but not then.. geez.. guess otters aren’t good at hearing are they??

When I worked with Ranger Dave on my Rochi-A-Cri cache container.. I found it better to bring to him several locations that I’d enjoy hiding it at.. I had those locations marked on their park map with lon/lats. By getting his okay on the placement prior to setting it there just seemed to be less of “she’s telling me where” but of him agreeing with me that the place(s) were well suited for such a hide. It would seem to give them more control over what’s going on instead of a cacher coming in out of the blue and INFORMING them that they already hid a cache and acting like it was their right.. (I hope I made sense in explaining it’s been a tough day)..

3.3 A cache may remain at the approved site for no more than five years at which time it must be removed and the Park Manager informed of the removal. This will control cache abandonment and assist in preventing volunteer trail development to the site.

Five years of caching on one spot would really make a volunteer trail likely.. but let’s see if they catch that (grins)..

And as far as prior caches.. I say that there should be a line in stating that older caches be grandfathered in.. as long as they are not in a sensitive area.. perhaps some volunteers can fill out the forms as to the lon/lats so that the rangers can place them in the files and forget about them (grins).. hate to lose ones like those at Gov Dodge..

in reply to: What GPS’s are y’all using out there? #1745031

I have the Magellan Meridian (waterproof) and a 64mb memory card & 32mb to hold VERY detailed maps.. then I have the MapSend program, which sits on my computer and I can use EasyGPS to download all of Wisconsin’s waypoints from geocaching.com.. and have them both on my GPS and computer.. I can find addresses, dirt roads and all that fun stuff.. it goes into 100 ft detail mapping so I won’t ever miss a turn (grins)..I have the street/trails map of Wisconsin totally on my memory card so I can sail around the state without looking at my atlas. I then can print custom maps of my day trips.. keep track of where I’ve been as well as easily use geocaching.com’s waypoints. I had to buy a car cigarette adapter as well as a car mount that sits on the dash.. I figure this unit should meet my needs and I wouldn’t have to upgrade for abit.. screen is small but easily seen while driving.. I had to turn off 2/3rds of the screens because I didn’t know how to use them (grins).. but I figured that the 3 screens I’ve chosen helps me get the job done.

(raises her hand to volunteer) I’ll help him (grins).. will also teach him about BEARINGS. I still have trouble with that .. (now knows it deals with the 360 degrees on a compass but can’t do it on the GPS) I’d love to know how to set up a bearing target away from ground zero (I know there’s a name for doing that)
Oh.. and I didn’t do 900 caches (grins)…YET… All I have left undone (in my safety zone below hwy29) is just a cluster of SWern ones, a thin ribbon from Beaver Dam to Ozaukee County, and Door County.. so UPNORTH I’ll go before hunting season kicks in.
