I am definately a big fan of how helpful GrouseTales is.. when I was doing my 52-Pickup WWF (WI Waterfall series) he was so helpful and always kept me in the loop as how things were going.. Thank you again, GrouseTales for all your hard work..

Oh and.. you’re welcome, CheeseHead Dave(grins).. it just shows that even if I’m not out on the trails.. I still have a constant eye on Geocaching.. and enjoy helping anyone anytime I can, if able to.. but I know how often JThorson had to deal with my odd phone calls on clearing up my confusions here or there.. that’s really what impresses me the most.. the geo-buddy circles of friendships made because of our love of the sport.

in reply to: Event Cache Finds #1746424

I think why people in the normal geocaching forums are sometimes harsh upon temp hides at events is because they feel shorted by the fact that if they can’t attend they lose out on a ‘find’ or two or ten. Some people of this sport are such PURISTS that they actually ruin the fun for themselves or for others by their constantly picking apart what should always be a fun activity. I’ve never attended an event because of the caches.. but it is a great way to team up with some new faces and enjoy their company.. I am a solo hunter so this type of caching is so enjoyable to me.. I’m quite social by nature and really enjoy the idea of our events.. I’ve been to several states where their events were the same as ours.. with logging done the same.. The few ‘human caches’ done at the last breakfast were really an ice breaker.. I’ve never seen so much mingling.. it was fun to watch.

in reply to: Rusty & Libby’s Big Page of Cache Links #1746381

Thank you for sharing that link.. there I followed another link to (http://members.aol.com/GeocacherBB/locationless.html) I had a great time today reading old logs on a bunch of locationless cache topics that interested me.. Native American Trail Trees found by others as well as other historical items/places.. I’ve jotted down their lon/lats and will enjoy seeing those places for myself. (I don’t log locationless caches but am glad that others can share these gems)

I have always kept a ‘address’ book of special lon/lats that have interested me.. now I’ve added a few more pages thanks to those pointing out historical spots like these.

Don’t get me wrong (smiles) I love your caches.. Your The Spice of Life was one of my favorites.. I’ll enjoy returning to the same parks only because of your talented hides and ideas.. You are the sole person that brought your area to our geo-maps in such a varied way.

    Just a thought..

Wouldn’t it just be good to relocate the same cache (with same name, same waypoint) to a fresh area within 500′ of where it was? I was all excited about seeing new parks/trails etc when those new ones popped up.. it just seems then that I’ll be going through DeJa Vu around the area. I know alot do not like driving but isn’t that half the experience of caching is going somewhere new?

in reply to: Snowfall Maps #1746324

(smiles) I’m still digging out from this last snowfall.. I have a great bunch of ‘retired’ neighbors that love to keep an eye on me. One came over on his 4’wheeler w/plow and said he had to help his “elderly” neighbor (giggles).. I’m the ‘baby’ in the community so they always are ribbing me. Another neighbor (handy with sm engine repair) came and ‘fixed’ my 5-stage snow blower that hadn’t been working since I bought it several years ago.. I guess I better learn how to use that thing soon (grins)

Just .. those actions mirror how we of the WGA always watch out for each other.. I like that feeling.

in reply to: Life span of a cache, just a few thoughts…. #1746266

These types of topics scare the heck out of me.. I begin to wonder where it is headed or what new clobbering/policing will come of this sport..

As most know.. I’ve done over a 1000 caches in Wisconsin alone.. traveling throughout our state on my geo-adventures.. if it was all about gathering numbers/counts.. I’d have not put on 1800 miles or so each trip to just gather 40 caches in the north woods.. (I’d head to/focus only on Minn/StPaul/Milw/Chicago/etc).. The point is – I’ve not done one negative log.. if I
want to get a taste of an area I thank others for showing it off…. I don’t see it as wasting gas or my time.. it’s all part of the day’s adventures.

I keep pushing for mentoring in private emails and would hate to see public bashing/rating/archiving etc on a cache that seems of little value to some. I’ve taken some comments here personally.. as I bet others also have.. so if I feel offended or having to justify my own caches.. ask yourself how our newer members must feel like??

I doubt that anyone that places a cache thinks that they are setting it out to ‘waste’ someone’s time or gas etc.. but to actually bring others into their life/mood/memory/excitment within the sport.. so if visiting my grandfather’s grave or stopping by a painting on the side of a barn bothers you.. just don’t do it… I’ve walked away from many caches that just don’t sit right with me.. but others in their logs just rave about it. So it’s all about personal opinions and life views.

To get back on the topic.. I feel that if a cache is making a vol. trail that impacts the land or if the hints are not clear and the surrounding area is getting trashed up from frustrated searchers.. those things should be handled and addressed.

    I like the look.. (smiles)

except it shows how lazy I’ve been these last 6 months (grins) I have cabin fever sooooo bad right now and no way to do a ‘getaway’ because of my home improvement project.

Here’s an attempt to map mine.. only retrieved 1473 caches but it should give an idea of my travels

All is well and this cache is now relocated.. though not as far in as the cache owner would have liked to try to show off this BEAUTIFUL area.. so take your time and hike on in further and enjoy the State Natural Area..

Oh by the way, Grousetales.. congrats on your 1000th post (grins)

My Dusty dog (15# maltese) travels with me in spring/fall when it is cooler.. she doesn’t bound out the door because she enjoys napping while I hike a bit.. I never do long ones when she is with me.. even tried taking her out caching on two of them but ended up carrying her (grins) 15 pounds sure gets heavy after awhile..

She is 15 years old and has no teeth, so her tongue hangs out (smiles).. I was once parked on the side of a IL roadway and didn’t realize the police saw me dash out of the van and into the bushes.. when I returned.. there they were talking to my pup and wondering if she was okay.. (remember her tongue was hanging out like she might have been dehydrating).. she was bounding all over the van all excited about the company and both the police and I had a good chat about geocaching.

But I know one day that my Dusty gal will leave my side.. but not because she wanted to.. and it’ll feel odd that no one is there to welcome me back home.
