Well.. I just joined Match.com (heard it worked for another Admin here) (grins).. so with putting in that I am a geocacher into my ad..
I’ve now had to call dates ‘geocache adventures’ because I’m getting asked so many questions about the sport that I now just arrange to meet them to mentor them on the sport at a cache location.. so much for love (grins)

Oh.. you didn’t tell me you’d have a fire there .. now that makes a big difference (grins).. I’ll try my hardest to be there as well..

(chuckles)I had to post about this one.. even though those states are closer to me.. I doubt if I’ll get west of the Mississippi often.. I love historical areas and love roaming around the eastern states the most. So my prediction of what I might do this year would be:

    To head to:
[Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia]

And I’ve still not found a cache in Iowa, Missouri or Arkansas… but would love to adventure to those states as well..

I’ve been to all of these states before but will totally enjoy returning and seeing them through geocaching eyes.

The only States that I have never been to are Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii. So even before I found geocaching.. I was a traveling nut (grins)

But then again.. I’d really love to return to every state I’ve been caching in already.. they were so amazing to explore and discover all those back roads. I’m atleast going to try to break away this winter and head down south to the warmth again..

(giggles) no outhouses.. but I did build two matching sheds and a 24×36′ garage.. I can always buy the next lot and put those things there (grins) But I am rustic and have a firepit and hammock right out my back door..

yes.. it does look like a lil church from the side (that’s my bi-level entry)

(smiles) just so you know.. that tale has been almost a secret for over a year now.. and I still chuckle when I read my old log that I made on that cache.. it was so tame compared to what I actually went through that day..
back then.. most thought I was crazy..(no longer a doubt now).. if I would have posted the total adventure.. they might have taken away my geocaching ‘card’.. (grins) but.. we know already.. how I lose things.. so if you find anything of mine.. best bet would be to keep it.. because I’d probably lose it again on my next adventure. But I still don’t understand why JThorson wouldn’t let me borrow his GPS to allow me to head back out there (grins)

    Glad you enjoyed my story..

hmmm.. so many options for me here (grins)..
but I’ll take the easy way out..

    You haven’t cached until…
You’ve lost your keys, in your underwear, treading water in cold Sept waters.. as you bail out your sinking raft..as your GPS drowns and dies.. with your dog locked in your car, as you talk to the police.. as an elderly couple assist you breaking into your van, while you’re standing on a garbage can…finally able to change to dry clothes.. then calling a geo-buddy (thanks JThorson) to dash you to the dealership for replacement keys..then eating pizza trying to talk the buddy into using His GPS (which he didn’t) to go back out in the water to find your keys and replacing the cache.. then bribing a metal detecting scuba diver that just happened to show up.. to recover your keys. (which he didn’t)

Yes.. this all happened at just ONE geocache, honestly (grins)
    see Under Where cache.

Well.. now this topic is right up my lil Otter alley (grins)

As most know.. I’m a female soloist in the sport..and have traveled well over 45,ooo miles alone while geocaching..

My top advice is.. never look like a victim.. show your strength in other ways.. a few examples below that I have ran into upon the trails..

    1) I was about .75m into a swampy area of a out-of-state park when I ran across a group of younger park volunteers building a walkway. They didn’t seem as ‘friendly’ as I thought they should be.. so I just said a quick ‘hi’. As I was exiting the area and walked through their camp area.. I came upon a wooden (empty) coffin within 75 ft. I didn’t stick around to question but did a power hike straight out of the area and back to my car. I then located a ranger and reported it. Rated: 5 star concern because it was a group

    2) While up in the northern area of our state I parked in a lot where two ‘Harley’ hog-types were hanging around. They were very ‘interested’ in me and I realized that I had to take the upper hand. I didn’t shy away from approaching them when I took out my GPS and asked them if I could question them on their health. I said I was there checking the radiation levels of this area and if they had any tingling in their genital area. (this took them totally by surprise and naturally they had a concern). They politely answered my questions and left the area ASAP.
Rated: 2 star concern.. (they always pretend to be ‘bad boys’ when in a group)

    3) While in a county park that seemed to be a ‘men’ only hangout.. I was approached by a elderly man that asked if I wasn’t concerned about being attacked out here alone.. Naturally.. this is a warning sign and a odd question for any hiker to ask. I spoke professionally about the sport and brought up my ranking.. people are less likely to harass someone that might be ‘someone’..
rated: 1 star (he was older than dirt)

    4) While visiting one of the top 10 haunted graveyards in the world near dusk (out-of-state).. I noticed most hikers were Goths (kids that wear only black, dye their hair black and try to pale their skin).. realizing that I stuck out like a sore thumb I introduced myself to a small group (guy with 2 girls). After explaining the sport I handed over my GPS to the guy and asked if they’d like to enjoy the adventure with me.
rated: 1 (being in a group of the ‘same’ makes anyone fit in even if they stick out)

    5) City (out-of-state) after dark.. well if I don’t glow in the dark.. no one will.. I was hunting down a micro around the sidewalk area. I wouldn’t have started this cache if I felt concerned about it (it was historical). A woman was walking by warned me that this was not the safest area of the city (inner city location). Knowing that she was a local, I explained the sport to her and asked her to join me in the hunt.
Rated: 4 (alone) but it went down to 2 once she grouped with me.

These are the only times I have ever felt a worry or concern (except a bear or two upnorth).. but use your own judgements and know your limits/extremes and how well you can assert yourself in vunerable situations.

oops.. I should also say that I have done most of what Rangerboy has recommended.. I own a whistle.. have a cell phone.. leave a note attached to my car with time in and expected time out and lon/lat.. I carry a black pocket knife.. and wear a blaze orange knit hat and vest.. and have a lighter or two. I have a very high pain tolerance and have had broken my arm (3 weeks without a cast) and broke my sternum (no body cast) so I know I could crawl out even with a broken bone or two.. I also always look at the maps to make sure I know which way out is the closest roadway/firelane. and I carry a compass as backup..8 rechargable batteries and a very small flashlight at all times.

    in reply to: % of Multi-Caches #1745938

Thank you wzbt03 for tossing me in the limelight (grins)

Actually many of my multi caches are out of respect for the area I wished to highlight/showoff.. most know that I love historical caches.. and placing a cache right at the ‘cool’ spot just doesn’t sit well with me.. I’ve traveled so much and saw so many ‘ground zero’ places worned down in a hunt or just normal foot traffic.. that I wished not to have our geocaching hunters disturb the area that way.. so I off-set them many times to a safer spot that allows a bit of fun.

Don’t get me wrong.. I do have some nice multi caches as well that will take hours to do.. but it’s all about the area to me and the reason for coming.

    ~The Lil Otter
oooo000PS.. I just realized that you were talking about “found” caches.. not placed ones (blush) I guess now is when my coffee finally kicked in..

before my PDA.. when I travel in-state.. I printed all caches here.. and out-of-state was more troublesome.. but now armed with my PDA I can be challenged by any cache along the way.. multi’s are enjoyable and now easier for me to tackle with the right setup.

My favorite.. Northern Wisconsin areas.. so peaceful there and such fun.. less traffic (none most times) and all the waterfalls I could ever wish for.

    Burrrrrrr…

It was a welcomed climb up 8′ through my old crawlspace hole to gain access back into my haven.. I elevated my entire A-frame up and had a lower level built underneath. Last night was the first time back into a constant ‘warm’ temp of 55 degrees and I enjoyed crashing on the couch. I had spent the entire time camping out in my driveway in a popup since the 17th of Oct constantly assisting in the build.. a few flurries and some ugly rainy days made for tougher work days but it’s a memory I won’t forget anytime soon. What a rush to see my entire ‘haven’ inching off its foundation and rising over my head. The first time I was inside the upper two stories, I felt like it was swaying (grins) remember.. I have a fear of heights. I was very surprised that I had no drywall cracks and I needlessly packed up most of my home thinking things were going to be falling all over the place as it was lifted and lowered.. the only thing that was ‘out of place’ was a shower curtain that fell. now to focus on unpacking after the ‘move’…

I still have a few more weeks to a month before everything will get back to normal.. I still need a few decks added to the front and back entries as well as the main ‘new’ 2 and a half story A-frame entry addition is complete.

I’m proud of my design and lucky enough to finally find a contractor that was willing to take on the challenge.. most A-frame additions are just slapped on additions that don’t fit within the overall house design.

I had the coolest idea last night.. it would have been so cool to have a deck building party where each would bring a deck 2x4x8 board with their name carved into it.. so just think of me outside today building my back deck entry with my daughter and son-in-law.. which will finally give me a safe way into the house and will then allow my maltese to come on in too (grins) The poor ol’ gal is roughing it down in the lowest level.

I’ll enjoy getting back into geocaching.. but really loved working upon my home and learning more skills.. I know how to mortar now.. so expect a fake rock hide from me soon (grins)
