  • in reply to: Life span of a cache, just a few thoughts…. #1746262

Speaking as a relative newcomer, I support the one year limit. Many of my finds have trails leading directly towards the cache, or the surrounding area is trampled to dust. Geocaching is supposed to be an enviromentally low impact hobby.

On the other hand its saddens me to see a cache archived if I have not logged it yet. I feel as though I missed out on something.

Like many, I first learned of Geocaching from the cable channel program on “Lost Treasures of America” or something like it. Intrigued, we soon had a Legend from Amazon.com.

I often use the Legend for driving directions, even use it when I know where I’m going cause I’m geeky that way. Flying to Florida in March and can’t wait to turn the thing on in the plane and know what I’m looking at.

I too was at Lambeau, GO PACK, on Sunday.
Cold weather doesn’t get to me as much as the wind does. Wind chills below zero would keep me inside, but my two young sons keep us indoors for most of the winter, unless it gets balmy.

How about the state of Wisconsin. Growing up, hiking and camping took up much of my free time. Even when I got married hiking was a favorite past-time. After buying a house and having a couple of children that all fell by the wayside. It seemed there was always something more important to do.
With the discovery of Geocaching we had a reason to go back to all the parks we used to enjoy. Going back to Paradise Springs, Kohler-Andrae and others after a long absence was a joy. We only have 27 or so finds, but that is 27 times that we have enjoyed the great state of Wisconsin and all it has to offer.

Thank you for your hard work to get this site up and running again. I found I really missed the forums and the discussions that take place there.
    Thanks again!!

Just thinking of a burger at JJ’s made me loosen my belt a notch.

    Took burger, left tip.
    Thanks for the meal.

“..virtually seek out the 64 global locations.”

Too bad it’s virtual. Woulda been one heck of a road trip.

…when you tell your wife you have to work on your normal day off, and then go caching.
(But I did fess up when I got home!)

in reply to: How can i change a multi into several caches? #1745623

Noooooooo… Please don’t change this one.
I’ve been waiting for work to slow down to do this multi. It looks like a blast and I would hate to miss the opportunity to do this one. I’m just a newbie but I’m guessing when temps start dropping a bit Who Wants to Play Clue will get some more finds.

Nice originality!! Congrats, and may you never lose reception.

in reply to: Multi’s — How far are you willing to go? #1745432

I thought Nature Hill Odyssey was the perfect multi-stage. A nice mixture of coordinates, bearings, and riddles. The 14 stages took me three hours over two days to complete. This did not seem too severe. This remains my favorite find.

A great idea. I’ve spent alot of time poring over topo maps to find out if the cache is suitable for my two and five year old sons. This would be a fantastic addition!!

I get the boys excited about going on a geocache hunt by telling them we’re going on a treasure hunt. The idea of kid friendly items in the cache works well for us.

An update is in order. Thanks for all the replies!! Snoshu, thanks for the offer, I probably woulda taken you up on it had I read your post before I ordered from Amazon.

I ended up buying the Legend without any additional maps. After playing around with it for a couple of days, I ordered MetroGuide by MapSource. The base maps didn’t show the level of detail that I expected and I liked the idea of setting routes and waypoints from the computer instead of the GPS.

We found our first cache, Scuppernong Springs, (thanks sbukosky) without MetroGuide and while I realize I don’t need the supplemental maps for geocaching, I think I’ll enjoy the bells and whistles that come with it.
