That is a great thing you are doing there CacheCows!

Do most of the attendees already have GPSRs? Or are most in the selection stage still? Reason I ask is that I know that you have Lowerance and Magellan covered. If some of your future events have participants that still haven’t chosen a unit, I would be happy to lend my Garmin, or attend with it, so they could compare the three major brands, and also have an extra unit to use for the hunt. Just an idea

AHA! Steve… you just stumbled upon the easy solution to using a single park sticker with multiple vehicles the EASY way!

Get a motorcycle helmet, be sure it is the type with the plastic flip-down face wind shield. Place the sticker on the lower left corner of the face shield. Viola! You are now set for riding your cycle into any park, with your sticker prominently displayed. If you decide to take your car or truck to the park, NO PROBLEM! just wear your helmet in the car! No law against that, is there?

Seeing that I didn’t even notice it, I’d say its PERFECT

in reply to: Poker, maybe I could win some cache! #1735013

Now that is pretty neat Too bad it is way up past Fon Du Lac. Will the other caches be in that general area, or will they be scattered over a large portion of the state?

I plan on playing, although I have no clue if I’ll hit enough caches over the course of the game

Wow, saturday morning, sunny, and weather.com says upper 60s for the day. This presents a dillema. Should I go HUNT some caches? Or should I finish creation of the series of four related caches I am placing? Hmmm…. the possibilities on a day like today are ENDLESS!

Hey, ya know what’d be real FUN….

Get together and make our OWN intro to caching video! We could cover all kinds of handy stuff for the beginner, such as an overview of GPSRs (brands, models, basic usage, etc.), show a basic hunt (from simple planning to the actual find), and cover environmental issues (Leave No Trace, responsible cache placement, etc.). The latter that I mentioned would probably be the greatest service to all, as I remember on my first couple of hunts, I did some excessive bush-whacking, which I now regret. Never realized that most caches are very close to a trail, and that if my GPSR is pointing 500 feet into thich brush and briars, there would almost certainly be a round-about trail leading very close to where I needed to be.

We could implement a wide range of cheesy humor.

Video could be burned to cd-rom in VCD format for a very low-cost distibution method (about 40 cents per copy to make, and less than a buck to mail, so they could be sent free to anyone interested for all practical purposes, or even streamed on the ‘net (although bandwidth might make this option cost prohibitive). And of course, good ole VHS is always an option, but the amount of time to make a “lossy” quality copy, plus increased postage would make this a less-than desirable option I guess.

At its worst, we would just have a lot of fun doing something like this, at its best, we could be of some help to beginners, and raise some environmental awareness. Video can do this in ways that words and pictures fall short.

    Any thoughts?

Try http://www.geodashing.org which is the main page. Click on “Summary” under “Current Game”. Actually, a more dirext link would be http://www.seaotters.net/~scout/Scoreboard/index.htm

Right now last month’s game scores are still up, I expect them to reset to the April game in a day or so. Looks like we finished 6th. Gee, if that farmer had been home so I could have gotten permission to walk out into his field, we would have finished 4th

Team Rabid Badgers currently has 3 members: Myself, Jeremy, and a man in Australia called “Dashing DOg Mac”. We did nicely last month, being only a couple dashpoint out of 4th place. This is pretty good seeing as we only have 3 team members, and started very late in the month!

We have room for 2 more members, if anyone cares to join, let myself or Jeremy know. We think it’d be fun to get more cachers from Wisconsin or the midwest involved, so you all have first chance to join before I post to the dashing group for global members.

Hehe… something like that. The Dash-Points are random points around the globe, picked each month. No cache to find, just get within a hundred meters of the point. The challenge and fun arises from the fact that being random points, you never know where you’ll wind up, and you can never even be sure if it is POSSIBLE to reach a point. My first dashpoint was in a corn field. Not very exciting. MY next one happened to be about a half mile inside off a highway in the Collins Wildlife Refuge, a place that I lived near as a kid, but never knew about! A good number of otherwise reachable dashpoint fall into private property, and this in itself makes it interesting. Many dashers seem to enjoy knocking on the door of the property owner to ask permission, explaining what they are trying to accomplish. Very often the owner is quite interested, and I have seen posts where the owner even tags along for fun

The challeng in Geocaching is finding an object concealed by another cacher, and the reward is often visiting an area that the cache hider enjoyed, and wanted to show others. The challenge in Geodashing is reaching a random point that, because nobody actually ever placed a cache or even walked out to, may be unreachable, and may be virtually anywhere. Preplanning (Studying maps, topos, and satelite images) is actually more important in dashing than in caching.

In a nutshell, caching and dashing are as different as they are similar. Dashing may not appeal to all, but I find it an interesting variation.

Heck, I just got my new 2002 sticker this past saturday, and was pretty irked when I tried to get the old 2001 sticker off my windshield… that IS some nasty adheasive!I managed to remove only small chunks of the corners Now I have a 2002 sticker above the 2001 sticker. What DOES work best to get those things off… razor blade? Hair dryer? Alcohol?

Hmmm… If I read this cache correctly, you are supposed to do more than pull into a parking lot. “Liquid Cache at the end of the trail.” and “You will have to follow the trail (a guide will direct you) to the end. At the end lies 4 containers with a golden supply.”

Sounds like a legit 1/1 difficulty cache to me

Oh, wait, nevermind… Caches are not supposed to contain alcoholic beverages

    Cache invalid!

    Welcome to Geocaching!

Everyone has their favorite units, and seriously, I think it is safe to say if you buy a new unit from Magellen, Garmin, or Lowrance, you’ll have a good piece of equipment. Make sure it has full 12-channel reception (I think you would only need to worry about this is you are looking at buying a used unit).

When I got started, I ran out and bought a basic Garmin eTrex. These can be bought for 100 to 120 bucks new. I have been happy with it ever since It is very small, rugged, and has very easy one-handed operation. Even though I called it a “basic” unit, it is packed with fun and useful features. Garmin offers several more models in the eTrex series which offer goodies like roadmaps, digital compass, etc.

I do know that the Magellan units have a slightly better built-in antenna, and supposedly do a little better under dense tree cover. My eTrex usually does just fine though. And it is a very bright yellow color that makes it very easy to spot if you should happen to drop it

The new Magellan Meridian series looks to be a winner. They start at 200 dollars, all have built in maps, AND expandable memory, and user reviews have been very positive on their accuracy. Plus they have a very large screen, making it easy to read. I went out to buy one of these a couple weeks ago (I wanted something with maps), and elected not to, simply because they seemed huge compared to my eTrex, and I was put off by the front side control buttons. They seemed to press rather easily, and I was sure if I put the thing in my pocket, the odds were pretty good that the buttons would accidently get pressed. My trusty Garmin has rugged side buttons that are close to impossibe to activate by accident.

There are so many good units out there now-a-days, I don’t think you can really go wrong if you are buying new. Just look at a bunch of different ones, and decide what features you want.

Does anyone know of any units to stay away from? That would probably actually be MORE helpful.

Hmmm… worked for me. I am using Microsoft Word 2000 (9.0.2720). Versions before 2000 may not have the ability to do this. Also, this will not work on Wordpad, just in case that is what you tried.
