If you are worried about Lyme Disease, NEVER crush a tick on removal! See link for the right way to remove ticks. Personally the Tick-Off device mentioned has worked well for me…http://www.aafp.org/afp/20020815/643.pdf

Mary called me early Sunday morning to tell me she had a tick in her leg and was asking how to get rid of it. I was sleeping when she called so I wasn’t understanding what she meant. I knew she had probably been running that morning so I thought she meant a tick like a stitch or a spasm in her leg. After I finally realized what she was talking about, I suggested placing a hot extinguised matchhead against it. That worked for her. Immediately after we hung up, I checked myself and found one on my neck. Eeeewww! I didn’t bother with a match. I just pulled that sucker off and crushed it.

Also a great primer on UTM coordinate system…that’s what the magazine will be using as their standard.
If anyone gets the chance to come over to the LaCrosse area in the next couple of weeks, there are an estimated 90+ species of birds that will be going through the area…the “pike” between LaCrosse and LaCrscent, MN had at least 40 species viewable, yesterday according to my DNR friends…
Sawyer’s has a great line of Permethrin based products that are great for applying to clothing. DO NOT APPLY to skin…I generally treat a set of clothes for hiking (just did last weekend in fact, because I have spotted some ticks also…) and caching…in 3 years I have NEVER had a tick on me when wearing the treated clothes…follow the labels directions and it works great…also the stuff lasts 4-6 washings. Also great to use on a set or two of clothes for kids that may go to a camp…
Great advice…GrouseTales…if you have a few minutes check out: http://www.backpacker.com/gear/footwear/step1/0,5201,,00.html
Take the time to see the things to think about when making your boot buying decision(s)….
