I’ve had mine tell me to drive across the lake. Problem is, there is no bridge. Silly GPS.

As a CO, I don’t mind short logs sometimes.

Example: I have a cache on top of a steep hill.

Most recent log of that cache:

“Huff, puff, up the hill. No one around. Cache was in great shape.”

I enjoy short logs like that mainly because it is not one of those cookie cutter logs and it does tell me that my cache was ok. I had planned to go check on it after a tough winter. But I can hold off on that now, based on the info from the log. And adding a little humor helps too.

Barry and I went back to Ed’s Lake today. Since we were there almost a couple years ago, 13 more caches was placed for a total of 24 caches on this trail. Barry and I had fun getting the 13 caches in addition to the ones we got a couple years ago.

A recommended series for cachers who love to hike and cache. Pack a lunch and take some water with you as all 24 caches may take 5 to 6 hours at the most.

Parking coords can be found at the cache in the parking lot GC1X5D0 .

    Have fun 🙂 I know I did.

Gas 4.24 here. I totally will not be geocaching period unless I’m in an area for something else. Gonna make my gas last now by keeping my car local.

Sucks to live in an area where the nearest unfound caches are over 20 miles away.

I only have 5 active caches. Two are a P & G. Both are at boat launches with a good view of the body of water.

The other 3 involve at least a short walk from parking to the cache.

I used to have cemetery caches as well but have pulled those as I don’t think cemeteries are proper places to go geocaching, but that’s a different topic for another time.

But anyways, “TFTC” logs don’t really bother me. For every cut and paste or TFTC log I get, I get several others saying it was a nice cache, they enjoyed the walk, blah blah blah.

    To each his own.

Urban caching with a bike is not an option for me. I use my Nuvi to get me to places when using my car. Car charger is always plugged into it. A Nuvi typically lasts about 3 to 4 hours on a full charge when not plugged.

So unless there is a charger that generates power from the bike itself similar to some bike lights, I doubt i’ll use the bike for urban caching. I’ll use it on trails though as i dont have to deal with city streets.

Unlike some of you, I do not have the luxury of living in a cache dense area.

According to my GSAK database, nearest unfound caches for me would be 50+ miles (Green Bay) if I want to do urban caching and about 25-30 miles if I want to go to the woods.

I have my own benchmark to consider when filling gas in my car. When gas was $3.19, a typical fill up in my Buick Century was about $35-38 dollars. Now it is $45-48 dollars. If I do not go anywhere, a full tank lasts me two weeks as my work commute is only 3 miles one way and I drive elsewhere only if I have to.

I make sure now that my tires are properly inflated and that my bowling balls are out of my trunk when I’m not bowling as the weight can lessen the gas mileage.

I’m thinking I’m still going going on my trip next month but may shift my focus to power trails where I can park my car once and then walk or bike to get the caches.

Originally I was leaning towards going to West Bend for a 3 day numbers run but starting and stopping my car for almost every cache I get will take a toll on the gas itself so that trip is out.

Instead, I’m looking into areas that has bike trails and hiking trails with Mackinac Island on the top of my list. I wanted to go to the Mackinac event this month but I’m working that weekend. So I’ll be doing that trip in Mid-May instead.

Looking forward to seeing more comments on this subject.

Exactly what I’m doing this spring, J & L. My son plays for the local high school tennis team so when he has a road meet, I’ll use the opportunity to pick up a few caches here and there.

I’m going to save up a bit more for my gas expenses for my May trip. I’ve been planning to do this for a while – where I don’t know – but I do have vacation time set aside to do it.

I think I can manage at $4 or less a gallon but if it goes over that, then I have a decision to make.

Thanks. My last three milestones all have not gone the way I wanted and I hope to change that with 900 down the road. I was glad to get 800 out of the way.

And thanks, Bakrdz, for the lottery ticket from Oshvegas. Sad to say it was a loser – lol.

Hell, I doubt I’ll see even 100 ?’s lol. Only got like 30 or so among my 800 finds. Nice job, Frogger.

Way to go, Mimi…I still have to solve that one yet…too bad I wasn’t with when you made the find.

I know I’m a bit late here. But I figured I’d give my two cents here.

My GPS is a Garmin Venture HC.

While it is only a basic GPS, I still love it. It’s small enough in my hands and looks like a cell phone that it’s great for urban caching. Heh, from a distance I look like I’m texting when I’m actually caching.

I use my Garmin Nuvi and my Ipod for the paperless aspect. I read the cache description on either device and off I go.

I know many of you want to be able to load more than the standard 500 waypoints in a GPS..but I’m more than happy with that. I have my laptop with me when I go geocaching and I have more than 5000 caches in my local database on GSAK with the potential to load thousands more via PQ’s when I hit a new area. For the most part, 500 waypoints is more than adequate because I usually don’t hit any more than 20-30 in a day. Only twice have I done more than 40 in one day. I always reload the GPS with new caches whenever I go on a trip unless I’m hitting the same area more than once within a week.

To sum it up, everyone has their own preferences in what they want with a GPS. Some want all the bells and whistles while others, like me, are happy with the basic functions. Some prefer Delorme over Garmin and vice versa. Some want more than the standard 500 waypoints in a GPS which I think is a bit of overkill sometimes..

Glad you found the type of GPS you wanted, Lenzes. Let us know how it works out for you.
