I find that to be a deterrent, too. I have discovered that if I do all my photo stuff ahead of time, I’ll remember to add them. Short term memory for that kind of thing is pretty limited past the age of 55! 😉
I talked to Trekkin’, who has some background in what might be termed “deviant behavior.” His take? Good people do these things because there ARE no consequences and it allows them to be “bad.” The same people will not steal from the workplace, lie about their time card or other such things, because there ARE consequences….even though they might be tempted to do these things.
He had other comments on the topic, but that was the main one from his perspective.
I think the gold bar might be the last one we actually received.
Ha ha, I can’t remember the last one of these promotions we’ve requested that we actually received. We request right away, but I think the game has grown so rapidly that they run out almost as soon as they announce them.
BBG, I’m curious to know if you recall the storyteller’s name. I know that story, though it’s not one I’ve told myself. There are variants and I’ve told a couple of them.

Poor girl is pretty banged up but it was great to see a sense of humor about it all. That will go a long way toward faster healing, I’m sure. Having been on the other end of a (not nearly as serious) caching injury myself, I was more than happy to stop in and help pass a little of time with you all. Here’s hoping that getting back to Madison and getting that leg fixed gets you back out soon!
We’ve done the St. Peters ones. Agree, those are great hikes with wonderful views and sights along the way. We did a couple today on the Ice Age Trail east of Cornell. One’s been out there almost 10 years, with only 53 finders in all that time. Easily one of the prettiest segments of the IAT we’ve ever hiked, too.
http://coord.info/GCM4DNPat, we were just talking about this kind of thing ourselves while we were out today…caching. We have also lost some interest in a lot of the side games out there, which in some respect, have led to some of the behaviors you mention. We were up in Taylor County this afternoon, hiking a portion of the IAT there. We found a cache placed in 2004. This segment is one of the prettiest ones we’ve hiked on the whole IAT. The location of the cache was by a rushing stream, with remnants (very few) of an old early 20th century lumber camp. In almost 10 years, it’s been found…..53 times.
We’ve had our ups and downs with grid filling, which is becoming far easier than it once was. Now a person can drive up and down a few roads, grab some “challenge” caches from stop signs, and there you are…well rounded. Yes, we’ve done some series like that. It’s what has cheapened that challenge for us, too. It feels hollow to us. When we tried to get well rounded a second time, we never thought that would be something we could achieve. We also see caches get ratings changes so that someone can get their next time well rounded on those things…which affects someone else. It’s all…so…silly.
We’ve taken the approach that we’ll just go off when we feel like it, find what strikes our fancy at that moment and walk away the moment it isn’t fun anymore. And if we don’t feel like caching….we don’t. Which happens more and more all the time in our case. We’ve been backing off gradually over the last couple of years and rediscovering old interests and even new ones. We don’t care how everyone else chooses to play, though like you…we sometimes puzzle over these odd things. We may not even top 1000 finds by year’s end, and a person can now do that in a couple days. I still hold that this is one place where there is something for everybody, which means a wide variety of folks out there enjoying the outdoors.
09/07/2014 at 1:54 am in reply to: Please send positive thoughts and prayers to 2CraziesMSN… #1976964We’ll be stopping at Gundersen tomorrow after church for a visit. Do they make floral arrangements with signed logsheets that are listed on gc.com? If they didn’t get the state park cache signed, they should be given a “pass” for that one. It’s those “safe” spots where you get hurt….never the 5/5 cache. We’ll report back tomorrow evening.
09/03/2014 at 9:49 pm in reply to: Please send positive thoughts and prayers to 2CraziesMSN… #1976947We’ve reached out them, as we’re close by and I can’t imagine dealing with something like this so far from home. Dave said the breathing tube is out and they’re trying to get her blood pressure down. They know we’d be happy to provide support in any way we can…I think positive healing thoughts would be great. Thanks for letting everyone in our geocaching family know.
Already spotted the new one, thanks.
It’s still a small device, but the write ups look as they do on the gc website. I have geosphere on my iPod and it’s invaluable for reading that kind of thing. Also, sometimes the long write ups get cut short in the Oregon.
We must have missed the cutoff to receive them, though I sent in my request as soon as I heard about them. It’s sure frustrating when they disappear, especially that quickly.
We got”nature lover,” which is probably a decent call. It’s what hooked us in the beginning, and what we tend to pick for a day’s destination. Might be the only quiz like that I’ve ever done that is close to accurate.
I mean, how does the same person get “2%” a&&hole on one quiz and “97%” bada&& on another?
Congratulations, Rick! So when is Rock Island?
