FOY (First of Year) Sandhill Cranes, Ring-billed Gulls, Common Grackles, Red-Winged Blackbirds and Kildeer. The weather isn’t super-nice, but the birds don’t mind. Many of the resident birds are now singing, too.
Our grand-daughter has a new favorite author. I just did some research, because we’re going to write a letter to her after school tonight. She lives in Red Wing, and mentions on her “about page” that you shouldn’t get her talking about, among other things,
“Northern Exposure.” I love her already! We spent the better part of yesterday clearing the roof and removing a really impressive ice dam on the north side of the house. We got about half way done. Took us about five hours. Hoping we get the rest done this afternoon. The sump pump is at the ready. We would like to skip basement flooding this season. We’ve avoided it the past few years and want to keep that streak going! 😉
Nothing here so far. We’re on the edge, it might be more rain and less snow. Not sure which is more desirable at this point.
I dunno….I went out snowshoeing in the woods for a couple hours with a friend, then we went out for a leisurely lunch.
We figure after this weekend’s messy storm, it might be our last chance in these parts for that kind of thing. One can hope, anyway. Yes, even I’m ready for it to be done!
Um, how is Georgia on the way home from South Padre? 😉 Safe travels.
Well, some days are good days. This morning I waited patiently to get a nice photo of an Eastern Screech Owl peeking out of its tree hole. Then I got an email from the owner of the yoga studio where I practice. They are giving members who have attained a certain number of classes cool handmade mala bracelets (one of the instructors makes them). I’m one of the “committed yogis” as the email stated. Or does it mean I need to be committed? *eye roll*
For me, it seems about the same as before. I use Chrome and haven’t tried other browers.
We are 11 days from surpassing our “longest slump.” Chances are we might just do that, since we don’t have any caching plans anytime soon. Only thing might be if we can get out and do some ice walking yet….otherwise…nope! None of the ice walking options are nearby, though we might be able to pick one up if we head north as planned this weekend for family stuff.
The snow was fluffy enough that we got out and broke trail with our actual, traditional snowshoes yesterday. We weren’t out as long as we’d hoped, as the long hiatus from use meant one of my leather laces on the binding was brittle and broke. Amazingly, I was able to shuffle all the way back with a broken binding. Good thing. When I tried to carry them, I went in up to my knees!
We really should have known better. We claim senior moments. As it was, we can both feel it today, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise. We got maybe a couple miles in the woods. Nice to enjoy the winter instead of complain about it! Today we stay in, except for my trip into town for yoga practice. Which will help with these aches!
We got about three inches here. Trekkin’s taking care of it now. He’s my hero. Our snowblower is still broken.
bennycams, The comment wasn’t intended to suggest that anyone using the phone app isn’t ‘good enough.’ It was more a theory on why things might be slowing down. If someone is going to enjoy the activity, the way they get there isn’t going to matter. Yes, we all take breathers, even if we’ve been avid participants. A lot of our friends who’ve been doing this even longer than we have mostly use their phones now. Trekkin’ got a phone last spring (I still won’t get one myself) and we’ve used it for caching as well. They’re great if you find yourself somewhere you weren’t expecting to be and want to see if anything interesting is nearby to seek.
So please accept my apologies if the comment offended you.
John, Your observations are interesting as well. Other than the turkey event raslas hosts in our area, we don’t have anything like a recurring “big event.” I sure don’t want to be responsible for making that happen, either, we have enough other things on our plate. Interestingly though, at least in our case, as we’ve moved along, we find we’d rather go out on our own now. That doesn’t mean we haven’t enjoyed the friendships and times caching with those folks. Just….where we’re at these days.
Aaron, I agree, this winter has made it *really* slow, but we’ve noticed this trend well ahead of the winter. I kind of wonder if the use of phone apps has anything to do with it all? When people invested in the GPSr unit, they had money into it, so incentive to make use of their toys. Now, people have the phones anyway, so getting the app isn’t any big investment.
Everything around here is covered in a layer of thick ice under the snow. I might as well just put the yaks on my boots even to walk out for the mail. I like ice with skates….otherwise, ice is not my friend. Especially when it hides under innocent looking snow.
Yesterday was sloppy with huge puddles due to the storm drains being frozen over. Snow overnight. maybe about three inches, but thick ice under it all from the sloppy stuff as well as the rain that fell before turning to snow.
And….the snowblower has died. It owes us nothing, but what a time for it to go.
Lots more snow here and it’s still coming down. The snow piles are almost to the bottoms of the hanging birdfeeders now.
