We did all of whatever was there last winter. We weren’t in any hurry, spent time in the nature center and all told, probably spent 2-2.5 hours out there. It’s a neat location, you’ll enjoy it!
I really like the one in the center, Becca, though they all look nice.
Tomorrow’s event has been cancelled due to this blasted cold.
Yeah, I was wondering if my FTP here would count in the stats. 🙄
I will add that though we really don’t do the trading stuff (leave that job for Pooh’s Pal!), there have been a couple times we came across really neat handmade items and were glad we still had some stuff to trade for them. One was a wood carving and the other was a little stuffed badger. I think the badger was actually someone’s sig item, from back in the very early days of the game.
Okay, I’m done here. I do tons of photography on the trail and keep saying i need to get some of it framed and displayed. But I never do.
I know Mrs. Timberline Echoes created a really cool display for some of their geocoins by altering a standard coin book. I don’t have photos and that’s for her to share if she pops in.
Beat you to it, Pat. At least you got to see the general idea. Now it’s pretty much a pile of shredded duct tape, though the container is still intact. But no fun at all.
Sometimes the places my computer puts my photos is a real mystery. Anyway, this is the other one, before it went on site. I’m still musing how I might create a more durable replacement for this one that carries out the theme. I kind of liked the alternate use of duct tape with these, but so did the local wildlife.
Okay, this was the first of those containers.
We’ve learned that critters seem to like adhesive. We reclaimed a lock and lock that probably got dragged off by a raccoon, because it was open and the lid removed where we found it. There was an iron on patch as swag in that one and the adhesive had been chewed right off.
I can’t really say I’ve combined one of my other crafting hobbies with geocaching, though I did have two fairly unique containers that required a little background skill with crafting things. Both have been claimed by the critters unfortunately and I replaced them with boring ordinary containers now. We’ve learned that cute is fun, but high maintenance. If I can find the photos I took of them, I can post them here.
Congratulations on a Major Milestone!
I do know that at least in the not too distant past, and maybe even now, the naturalist working at Perrot is funded by their Friends group. Bill’s suggestion is great. A lot of these places are operating with pretty basic resources these days. I do think a lot of the programming the various parks offer is through the Friends groups. The state monies go to staffing the parks and basic upkeep, I’m just guessing.
I did discover something else interesting poking around the DNR website. You can search state recreational lands according to a variety of activities. One choice is geocaching. Click that and parks with caches show up, at least if the placers filed the needed paperwork. So at the very least, there’s that much involvement on their end.
01/17/2014 at 2:32 pm in reply to: 1st Time in 4 Years! Lake Sup. Sea Caves open via ice hiking #1974003I’ve been watching this and we’re tempted. We’ll have to see if all the other stars can line up for us before it’s too late.
I like Pat’s ideas. My original intent in starting this thread was a simple suggestion to begin partnering with the parks to make the cache series more visible to anyone who might stop at the contact stations.
The thread has morphed into one about how to reward people. As I said, the parks exploration is for us, reward enough. We did two placed by Lostcheq that were in parks we’ve visited before, but she shared a new part of both that we really enjoyed.
That said……with a disclaimer. We really aren’t into self promotion and “look at me.” At the risk of doing a facebook-like post of the type that finally drove me from that site……we own a challenge cache that’s been out there a couple years now. It isn’t directly related to the parks only, but if people pursue the WGA series and go beyond just “grabbing” the WGA caches in each park, they’ll be a long way toward qualifying for this one.
Just sayin’.
