Looks like Trekkin’s going to skip the Oshkosh Trade Fair for about the first time ever. Sick of winter driving, tired from traveling for family duties, it’s going to snow this weekend…again.
I love having snow, but we’ve got enough now.
Trekkin’ is with our older son and our son’s friend at an ice fishing derby in Point. Tip-ups and bluegrass on the ice. Sounds like a fun day!
I have shoveled twice…yesterday about two inches, then this morning another couple that fell later on. I am ever thankful for the neighbor next door who blew out the front sidewalk. Looks like this next batch might be more than that and Trekkin’ keeps calling to explain the snowblower (which I hate). I am not an auditory learner.
Just came in from about an hour of xc skiing in the woods, no trails. My favorite way to go. Tried to take photos but the camera batteries dropped dead, so you’ll just have to believe me on this! 😉 Depending on how the rest of the day goes, I might go out later tonight. We shall see. I am never happier than when I’m gliding on wood planks through snow.
Coming down steady here. Trekkin’ just called to try and explain the snowblower, which I don’t like, though my back might appreciate it. Last big snowfall when he was gone, I injured one side of my back and my left shoulder hasn’t been quite the same since.
We’ve found a total of 5 caches this year…it’s been about 35 days since we found one. We have actually been enjoying being free from “needing” to cache…especially when the weather’s been brutal. Trekkin’ may or may not try to do an ice walk cache when he comes home from up north, but otherwise, we have no caching plans in the near future.
Our monthly gasoline bills have been way, way down, too. There are birds close to home. Things to knit. Local music venues to enjoy. Books to read. I’ve been having fun freezing soap bubbles and watching crystals form in them. And….it sounds like I’ll get to do lots of snow shoveling while he’s gone!
For some reason, this song is rolling through my mind today……
Actually, in our early days of caching, this was kind of our theme song, because….it seemed we never did things nice and easy. Today….other images are coming to mind!
Trekkin’ left for his 9AM appointment to get new tires this morning, snowstorm and all. Well, when he still hadn’t been called to the counter at noon…..they forgot! Needless to say, he got quite a nice discount for having to sit around the Subaru dealership for the entire day. All this snowy weather gave him a good feel for what it’s like to have new tires, too.
We do the same thing with mail like that, jar. Today I got a big envelope from our congressman. Inside was a copy of the photo taken right before Thanksgiving when I met with him as a representaive of Audubon. Autographed. For real. Personalized and everything.
My tax dollars at work.
Hey, Birdin’…we went to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge today…lots of birds winter in the area including the whooping cranes. We saw a couple at a distance…also saw a reddish egret that we’d never seen before.
Way cool. I took part years ago in a program at Necedah to view the flight training of the chicks there and got a pretty awesome shot of a pair of Whoopers later when they took us on a tour into closed parts of the refuge.
We are finalizing reservations today for a “once in a lifetime” trip by special conveyance down to NOLA in the fall. I started looking for areas along our way home where we might see some birds I wouldn’t see here. Apparently in the town where Tabasco Sauce is made, there is also a bird sanctuary. So….we might take the long road home.
I’ve been messing with my new ukulele to celebrate…..a weem a way, a weem a way, a weem a way….
Fun little instrument, should help keep the arthritic fingers at bay, that’s for sure. Lots different than the dulcimer…both are fun!
Our neighbor blew his snow right onto the side of our house last night, so Trekkin’ went out to clear it away, especially from that critical vent. Like…literally a couple feet piled up the side of the house! He’s a nice guy, but it seems like when something annoys him, he just….vents this way! Maybe his kids were supposed to do it and they didn’t. Who knows? What’s kind of creepy to us is the fact he graduated from high school with our older son. Really? Our kids are that old?????
Just ordered my own ukulele. I figure as long as I’m going to uke club with the grandkids, I might as well have my own for practicing. One can never have too much music in the house!
Taking a knitting break and somehow, I missed all these more recent comments on the topic. I have to report that now, the ammo can for the Well Rounded is….gone. We have done maintenance on everything out there again in the past few weeks, and replaced that one with a smaller, less exciting container. I’m especially saddened that the logbook and stamp I made also took a ride. Again, this is a remote area requiring a hike and in the case of that cache, a haul up a pretty steep hillside, no matter which way you come at it. Again, since Trekkin’ himself is a hunter, these have all been placed to elude detection by hunters, and because of the nature of these placements, not likely to be some teenager with a smartphone…though that could happen.
On the upside, Trekkin’ has placed about 4 or 5 new caches recently, deciding he’s not letting these issues steal his joy. Typically, the FTF and the second to finds rush out, make the find and now they sit. Oh well. I do think in our area, anyway, there isn’t as much caching activity as was once the case.
We’ve found about half Bob/seekers’ caches. Look them up, bartrod, they’re fun, even when you’re pulling your hair out in the process. Ourselves, we’ve pretty much entered our “vacation caching maybe” phase of the hobby. We don’t need to be looking for boxes in the woods in order to explore…the woods. We had an awesome time a couple weeks ago with Pooh’s Pal hiking to one of the ice caves along the Kickapoo, and no caches were assaulted in the process, LOL We discovered the joys of the outdoors and nature eons before we discovered geocaching, so we have just kind of slid back into our pre-caching pursuits mostly.
Hope this works….who else braved the cold the other night to enjoy the show in the night sky? I went skiing under moonlight earlier, then stayed up to enjoy the show.

School was delayed two hours here, and now it’s started up again. No evening activities and Trekkin’s historical society meeting is cancelled as well. Give me nice snow any day over this kind of thing!
Completely agree, Linda. Good news is really welcome in a case like this.
