Now THAT is funny!
Minnesota, my home state. We have over 3000 finds there. Our two favorite areas to cache there are around Cannon Falls/Faribault/Northfield and the North Shore.
They are dumb, but harmless. Geocaching in general is dumb, though not necessarily harmless. So far we’ve been able to get them, and when I’m bored, it can entertain me to look at them for a couple minutes. But I’m with Pat….how did I EVER manage to miss the one for National Bacon Day???? That would be worth something! 🙄
Well, we’re seeing that some are logging challenges that they actually found another time to get their souvenir today. Oh well. We did log a challenge, but we actually found a cache, too.
Pooh’s Pal just dictated his log for today’s find. He thinks that souvenir is “awesome.” Since he can hardly ever find a cache big enough to trade toys anymore, why not give the kid a digital toy? 🙄
If you just want active caches, do a search for wisconsin, then click on”placed date.” It will arrange the caches in order of publication date for you. Also, the challenge cache that kungfuhippie has for wisconsin’s 13 oldest, located in gov. Dodge sp, has a bookmark of those. Hth
It’s harder to look for archived caches, but lord of the caches predates this one and is still active. I looked through a couple of long time cacher’s profiles and sorted their multis by placed date.
They are kinda cute. One half of our team says “meh,” but we’re a team, so we’ll give it the old college try, though I’m quite sure life will intervene at times. I am always surprised at how much controversy something so inconsequential engenders. I’d be thrilled if my biggest concern in life is whether or not these things have “value” or are “cheapened.” Kind of like the FTF game. It used to be a challenge to get them around here, especially without notification or a fancy phone, but with 400 or so appearing on nearby bike trails….the challenge is gone. For those who enjoy challenge caches, we’ve discovered souvenirs can have “value”. But like anything in life…..if it’s not one’s bag, they can be ignored. One half of our team would like to ignore the challenge attached to souvenirs, but again….we’re a team. 🙄
I was surprised to hear groundspeak can remove them. On my first trip to CA getting caches, the souvenir never came, so I wrote to them to see if they could put it in. They tried, but it didn’t work. We got one on our second trip out. Go figure.
We’ll give it a go for the same reason as KFH. Overall, I’d much rather get travel-related ones, but hopefully we’ll get one of those next week.
If you have gsak, there is a macro for “the well traveled cacher” that may be helpful.
On a side note…enjoy your travels!
You sound like Trekkin’ now! 🙄
Congratulations, I just noticed that one come through on “recent logs.” Those can be a lot of fun, and a lot of frustration, glad it all worked out in the end!
Congratulations to both of you!
Congrats you guys and thanks for choosing one of our favorites for your dual milestone. We really appreciate great logs and yours was one of them.
The new Minnesota DeLorme also has a “find after publication” requirement. We may or may not complete it, who knows? Everyone has differing opinions, but we like that aspect, because it makes it a real challenge. We couldn’t just waltz up to find the new Wisconsin because we’d already done the original. It gave us the chance to explore the state once more. Yes, it means more travel and expenses. Some of us can make that choice, others maybe not. There are things we’d love to do as geocachers and cannot for other reasons. The new Wisconsin DeLorme was one we could do, though it took us quite some time to get there. I can see the opinions some have stated about preferring the county challenge over the DeLorme, too. And I can see the opinion some have about not wanting to bother with ANY challenges, but that wasn’t my question. My question simply asked why the DeLormes seem to have faded in popularity. Thanks for an interesting conversation!
