iPod Touch and your nearest coffee shop or McDonalds works for us for spontaneous caching. Our phone isn’t real smart! 🙄

Thanks for all the great ideas. We have certainly seen the degradation of trade items, it’s pretty discouraging. I recently had to archive a cache as a result of mountain bike trails expanding to the point that it was literally next to one of their jumps. What was in the container was just junk, junk, junk. Personally, I’d rather if someone sees something they like and have nothing to trade, to just take it, rather than leave expired gift cards, empty candy wrappers and whatever else happens to be in their pocket, ready for the nearest garbage can. We have also tried to leave things in caches that are empty of much swag, but these days, we’re being a little more careful with our cash until we have a good feel for how this whole retirement business works.

I’m trying to live by Ghandi’s advice, “be the change you want to see.” I know that’s idealistic, but if I keep getting annoyed with everything that might annoy me about geocaching, nothing will ever change, least of all for me. In the end, the only thing I can change is…me! Thanks again, keep any more great ideas coming.

Hurray for you guys! I’ll bet you’re getting to see some amazing scenery at the same time. Have fun!

Yup, summer is definitely our least favorite season for caching, other than paddle caching!

Trekkin’ is unfortunately pretty expert regarding ticks (three new infections of Lyme over the years, none for the last couple, fingers crossed). The ONLY time he ever showed any kind of skin symptoms was the last visit after a couple of “misses” when he pulled up his shirt for them to inspect the site and the rash had developed since he’d dressed that morning.

We now check constantly on the trail and flick off what we find. If the area is secluded, we’ll check each other with shirts pulled up and so forth before getting in the car. Otherwise, we make a pit stop and check there. Everything gets thrown in the washing machine upon entry to the house. Still, we find a few after all that, and Dick even found two in our dryer today. One actually survived. They are amazingly well adapted critters.

And we found a good sale on the BugsOff line of pants. Each ordering a pair of our own.

It’s a long way off, but we’re hoping to go there and make a trip of it. We could get more New England states at the same time, since I only managed to visit CT. I learned quickly one thing about New England…lots of rock wall hides! They make that one in Pike Lake SP look like a park and grab.

Oh, that’s just miserable! We encountered that stuff yesterday near Rochester. I have always called it cow parsnip, but you’re the expert in these things.

In more ways than one.- unfortunately. I got some great advice from a friend on natural healing for a deer fly reaction. It involved chewing plaintain leaves, then applying them to the affected area now and then throughout the day. It worked wonders. I did not have itching, but a huge welt at the bite site and my eye was getting swollen shut. Might look into the efficacy of that cure for what ails you.

If a person were coming out of town, would it be a terribly long walk back to the car from the end? That’s always our dilemma when it comes to series like these, which we enjoy a lot. Too much to load the bikes and the canoe for that length of a drive.

Keep in mind we don’t mind walking multi mile distances, but might be a bit tired after paddling! Thanks for the recommendation.

The bird app is called iBird Pro. It’s kind of expensive for an app, but it was on sale for half price this spring. Still cheaper than the umpteen million different field guides and song ID tapes I have.

The first aid one is Pocket First Aid and CPR. Arranged logically and clearly, so that if you were out and needed the info, it would be quick to find and easy to follow. I know it’s not quite up to date, but that stuff changes almost every time we’ve had to be re-certified, anyway.

The butterfly one is Butterflies of Wisconsin. My only complaint with that one is they don’t tell you the average size of them. So it might look big in the photo in the app, but might be a little thing.

Those are the ones I have, plus geosphere. I’d be interested to hear what other non-music apps people have on their iPods and how useful they find them.

The app will need updating, but I guess that will be coming soon. We’ve both done first aid and CPR every year, but you’re right…..nice to have it right there in front of you if needed. Just seemed like a good way to spend four bucks.

Same iPod and same computer, but one of the apps did tell me I needed to authorize this computer. Everything’s cool, nothing was lost. I have yet to put any actual music on the thing, LOL, but I have a great Bird field guide, the Geosphere app and now a first aid/CPR one and a Wisconsin butterfly app. Can you believe there are NO apps for frog id that include their calls? My bird one has sound files galore, I love it. Couldn’t find a decent one for dragonflies or wildflowers, either.

Okay…so then why does it ask me if I’m sure, because I’ll lose everything? That’s what had me confused.

And yes, I do wish Garmin could work that out. I’ve learned to drop “caches of interest” by loading them onto the Oregon one at a time directly from gc. Those don’t drop out unless I do it manually from my Garmin folder.

Make sure you have spare batteries in your pocket and a tweezers can be helpful for retrieving logs or tiny caches. Most of all….if you’re having fun, keep on going. If it’s not fun anymore, quit for the day!
