Congratulations Dave, looks like this would be an especially fun one to find in the next few days.
What a wonderful tribute to the value this silly game can provide. Thanks for sharing this!
Ralph, And you think you know me so well….well, I was a championship debate team member in high school and college!
Surprised? I’ve got it in me if I think it matters, LOL. What people do with their souvenirs or smileys or any of that matters not to me! 😉
Yeah, really, what a pathetic excuse of a goal, eh? I mean, really, so what’s the big deal about traversing the swamp on snowshoes to reach the source of the Eagle River, crawling into a narrow cave entrance to discover three huge “rooms” or crossing the Montreal River several times to discover the falls themselves? 😉
No, there is always the very valid choice to stay inside in the winter, but benny’s original plea was simply to encourage the use of attributes to help those of us who do enjoy winter caching, as it can be helpful in choosing where we might want to cache.
I still haven’t been successful in turning the attributes “on” so my Oregon will display them, though. I know there was a thread here about that and I did what it said, and…no go.
No surprise, considering it’s me. I still marvel that I’m active in a sport that relies so much on technology!
Not really, since basically we already got the “souvenir” when we got the electronic smiley for going there, LOL. Bonus smiley, maybe? 🙄
This hobby is one odd duck, isn’t it? Believe me when I say I’ve been involved in a variety of hobbies and know they have their own subcultures.
Looks like Ohio has been granted now. Whoop de doo. You know, if you click on the little icon thing on your souvenir tab, you get the full image. Those are really nice, but I still ask…what the heck is the point?
Trekkin’ and Timberline Echoes do. Trekkin’ has one, too. You have to get them in the U.P.
I think I can safely speak for both myself and the other half of our team….the one who enjoys a FTF quite a lot. It really doesn’t matter…honest. He would even say that. It’s a fun number that doesn’t mean anything, really, other than the fact that the chances are good you found it exactly as the owner intended. This is Trekkin’s motivation for seeking a cache first. As far as I know, other than the various stat generators, who found it first isn’t a number that is recognized officially. There is not an icon for FTF.
As Trekkin’ would say, in the end it’s fun to be the first, but mostly, we just want to find ’em.
For us, as letterboxers as well, we usually log any hybrids on both sites. I am not opposed to the current “competition,” but don’t plan to complicate my own life further by creating yet another profile and password I have to try and remember.
I think the official snowfall at the NWS in LaCrosse was about 17 inches. I know there’s a lot of it out there! I can’t find anything specific to our town, but I think maybe it’s more than that. The weather patterns here are really variable as a result of the bluffs and coulees. We’re dug out, though. Three different times, actually.
You know, I always used to think winter was great because of no bugs. But…..I wish I’d brought my camera skiing yesterday, because I stopped to watch some kind of spider battling its way across the trail on the snow yesterday. Aren’t they related to ticks? 😯
I did that series a couple years ago in the early spring, when I was at a conference in Green Lake. Out there at dusk, it was wonderful. And I also thought it could be a nice EarthCache, but my mind was on the peepers, and the American Bittern and the rails calling, so I didn’t do more than think about it.
Minnesota pulled the plows earlier today. According to our NWS, at 4PM the unofficial snowfall was around 9 inches. It’s let up some, but still coming.
Off to fry some bacon, for real this time!
Dick’s out for the second time. He wanted to clear things before the nasty cold, but it hasn’t completely stopped here yet. I’m guessing at least 8 inches now.
Gotta remember to watch the news for his yooper shoveling technique, too. Off to make an interesting supper. “Smoky Bacon and Squash Campanelle.”
Bacon being the key word here, LOLFor a system driven by strong winds, it sure took its time crossing the state, didn’t it?
