Congratulations, that was a chilly milestone indeed. Snowshoes in January work great on that one! 😉
Congratulations! Always gratifying to turn those around.
We’ve encountered this with skirt lifters, too. Since the caches are usually placed away from the main part of the lot, the snow gets shoved to the area and buries the lamp post.
Each season presents its own challenges. The trade off for the snow is….no ticks! This is fairly important to Trekkin’.
Congratulations and I’m guessing 3000 might still come sooner than you think!
Maybe Dave or Bec can weigh in here, too. I did locate a website with general historic information, and it includes the text from that sign….which makes me wonder about the validity of the site in general. Still, there is basic historic information about the recent history of the tribe and it might relate somewhat to the concept of that rock disappating. Can a virtual cache require a little advance reading, sort of like a puzzle cache? Just a little, we don’t want to make this into a major research project for anyone, but I do like the idea of getting to know a bit more about the people who granted us permission to play our game on their soil.
I might just email Lorrie to get her perspective and insight on this as well. Since she was involved in the original negotiations to allow the placement, I’m sure she can offer some valuable help. Or, if you’re reading this…..shoot me a PM! 😉
We’d thought of the photo thing, but I know that’s now considered an ALR. Maybe Ralph’s suggestion works. The main thing would be to keep this going.
I’m wondering if that sign *will* be replaced. Since adopting this one, I’ve been reading up on the history of the Menominee Nation and chatting a bit with a couple of my NA friends, who are not Menominee but pretty involved in their own respective tribes’ cultural histories. I’ve been trying to find info specific to the sign’s removal online and can’t, but I’m guessing that it may have been removed by the local government. The whole county is a sovereign nation, so if they don’t want the sign there any longer, it is fully within their legal right to have it removed. I’ve been told that story is not so much a Menominee story as it is a white man’s rendering. That’s not direct commentary, but from reasonably informed folks.
Thanks for the ideas…we’ll entertain others if anyone has them.
Okay, so if I’m understanding this correctly, Garmin may not actually be *doing* anything with opencaching other than taking over that internet domain name? Are they trying to sabotage the efforts of the folks trying to get the site moving?
When I clicked on the link, I just got the logo and it doesn’t seem to take you anywhere else. What am I missing here? Or is it just a placeholder until they figure out what they want to do with the site?
Digital Dan and Bunny FuFu are trackables, too. They have tattoos that look like the travel bug icon, with tracking numbers. I accidentally retrieved Fu, LOL.
I’m sure there are others who done this too, but they’re the first I’d heard of who did that.
Trekkin’ is actually toying with the idea of going out this year…don’t know if he’ll follow through. He hunts with blackpowder, so the weather conditions have a big effect on that.
In the field, I’d want the basics. I can do the other stuff, but need to give myself those wonderful refresher courses and time to play with the numbers, since they aren’t a part of my daily life anymore.
Kudos to you for making the right choice. That window is shorter than you even realize…it’s gone so fast.
Congratulations…..may there be many more stars (and smileys) in your future.
As someone said, for caches rated 4 and below, probably not a big concern for those who enjoy rounding out that D/T grid. Of course, we don’t love seeing one of those toughies get changed on us, but someone’s grid shouldn’t be the determining factor for a cache owner. We’ve “lost” critical cells a few times along the way as the result of a change, and while it sets us back, it also gives us a new adventure to seek out to “plug” that hole. For the longest time, we only needed two more caches old enough to qualify us for the original well rounded in California. Ran the macro and noticed…..what? No 3/4.5 from before 4/6/07? There used to be!
We still haven’t figured out which one got changed, but we’ll get that one replaced and have fun doing it. I’ve heard there’s some kind of macro that “locks” one’s finds for a given date in time, but we’ve never bothered to hunt that one down. As a team that enjoys well rounded challenges (along with many others) and who owns the one for the Badger state, we’d rather see people qualify fairly on the date they find ours. I know at least one team has had a cache swing back and forth with the seasons, and finally got things lined up to get the WRC when the stars aligned, before it swung back again.
In the end….it’s just a game. 😯 Enjoy it the way you wish!
Yes, as long as whoever finds it knows to enter the tracking number and log it from there. We’ve done that with some we’ve found, and people are always happy to see them back into play.
