I have seen Marc sign a log sheet a time or two…even have a photo to prove it!
Congratulations Marc.
I don’t know about the malicious and vindictive part, but definitely the mischief part works. Congratulations!
Oh, and CJ…..there are different macros out for GSAK that create buttons to allow you to load your POIs into the nuvi. We have the nuvi 360 and that’s how we do it. I have a new one I want to try, but I’m afraid to mess with what’s working, LOL.
I absolutely cannot believe I know something technical that you don’t know! 😯 Mark that down on the calendar, it will never happen again!
I already have that version set as my preference. Could there be something I need to do with GSAK? I think I’m only one version behind on that…the newest came out in only the last couple weeks, I think.
I have also updated my Oregon 300 to the latest software, as of Saturday.
We have gone to Door County twice specifically to cache, both times in the off season. We’d camped with our kids a couple times years back, before caching. We love going up there in the winter. No crowds. A completely different feel. We had Cana Island light all to ourselves. Ditto on the Europe Bay cache, where we had the amazing good fortune to encounter a wolf pair on our way out. (Yes, there are DNR confirmed sightings of them up there).
Both times we stayed at the White Lace Inn Inn in Sturgeon Bay. Rates are really great off season, about like any chain motel. If you time a trip to be on a Thursday night, there’s free live music and beer! There are some caches up there we still want to do, but aren’t so easily accessed with snow.
We agree with your geocaching road trip philosophy. We spent a couple days this summer in west central Minnesota over to the SD border. Our caches were chosen much as you chose, and we discovered some wonderful spots known mostly to the locals. I have done the same thing with my long distance trips to Hawaii last summer and Newfoundland this. We hope yet to visit the North Shore of Minnesota with a cacher’s eye. I spent a lot of time there as a kid….Dad’s from Duluth….so I’ll be curious to see if it takes me anywhere new. Don’t care. Any excuse is a great one to travel there! It’s a great way to see all those little corners of a state and slows us down to appreciate the back roads and small towns.
Jeremy, I don’t think you should feel that the problems are partly yours….as Shane said, our culture in general has made anything competitive seem to be a Big Deal. You can’t control what others say. People have asked for kids’ activities at these events and folks, especially Shane and his family, have tried to make that happen. Kudos to all of you and I’m sorry that some folks feel that complaining to people who *volunteer* their time to provide events is okay. It is not okay. It’s not the “Amazing Race” with big prize money and appearance contracts, it’s a silly game which should be enjoyed in that spirit. From where I was sitting, it looked like the kids were laughing, which should be the real prize here. And…..I’m sorry… Real pancakes? When there are people who’d love a bit of food? You’re kidding, right?
Many, many people… from the citizens of West Bend to countless volunteers from around the state…. offered their time to give us a fun weekend. From most accounts, it was a fun weekend. I am not speaking as a member of the Board, but someone who tires of petty complaining about things that don’t matter when there are so many more in this world that do.
Count Trekkin’ and myself among those who applaud what everyone who was any part of this fun event did. Of course there are always things that can improve, but Trekkin’, who has been to all three, says the event gets better every year. Thank you to each and every one of you.
08/16/2010 at 3:07 pm in reply to: Thanks to all who helped with the WGA Booth on Saturday!!! #1934525frmr and lone gunman were present most of the day as well, which was much appreciated. It’s a fun way to put many faces to names, especially at a big event like this.
We did every cache on the island in two days, plus some on the mainland. Start with the caches near the ferry landing so you beat the crowds once off the boat. Do the stuff along the shoreline first. You can head up and get the things near Arch Rock, then come back down and continue around. When we got to the other side of the island, we went up on top and tackled those. You get to see parts of the island only the locals visit, which is fun. Finish up around the bottom and enjoy the ride. We hope to go back, as many of the ones we’d found are archived and new ones placed. Have fun!
We’re hoping we can come for at least part of this, but Pooh’s Pal turns one that day, and his birthday party trumps geocaching!
Mike, Thanks for the Rice Lake reminder. We did some of the other Felsenmeer ones a couple years ago in the winter, and wanted to get back when the snow was gone to do this one. In fact, I think we’d targeted this one for 1000, but then hit that milestone during deer season…so we ended up in Iowa. 🙄
With the horribly oppressive heat, we are seeing the worth of the park and grabs lately. Cemeteries are interesting places, and have something to offer besides stopping at a nondescript guardrail. But we can’t wait till things cool down and some mosquitoes meet the end of their life span to get out and hike for miles in the woods or some such place to get one cache. One cache.
Like HI-LO. Or Felsenmeer Ridge. Or Lost Falls in Cornucopia. Or Eagle Source. That kind of thing!I’ll help the “noobs” at the Saturday caching class.
I hope there are more volunteers for this and I’m just missing that thread somewhere. I will be around for the entire weekend, and will help where I’m needed, but I do want to spend some of the time caching with Trekkin’ and friends as well. Please tell me some others have stepped up…. 😯
Just a reminder that any member of the WGA is more than welcome and encouraged to take a little time out of your day to help out here. Thanks!
Two of the first finders were ladies….myself and mamasplash. It’s one of our favorites as well. We were just down in that area this morning and some places along this hike might be really wet right now. The Kick is dangerously close to jumping its banks, and in some low lying areas….it has.
I’m guessing Dad G*Force probably has more hides than logged, too. Way to go!
That one sounded like a fall cache, but the berries could tempt me! I’m a bit cautious of late….some kind of spider got me really bad even with jeans on, and that was not even in very brushy stuff. Let’s just say I am currently wearing nothing shorter than cropped pants, as the surrounding bruising or whatever it is is UGLY!!!! And extensive. Doesn’t appear to be brown recluse, which I thought at first. Thank goodness.
But we’ll get to that one eventually.
