The riverboat is a lot of fun. The LaCrosse Queen is the more popular one. In the evenings, at least this used to be the case, they had jazz tours. Daytime is just a cruise. The Julia Belle Swain has various cruises, more expensive but sometimes brunch ones aren’t too badly priced if they’re in port here. It’s a real beauty and a true steamer, not a pretend one. John Hartford even sang about it.

And ditto on Granddad’s. You just have to go there. Be prepared for bugs. With all the rain and standing water, it’s been really bad, even with the mosquito guys spraying. The mayflies have been hatching as well. I won’t spoil that “surprise” for you, you just have to see it for yourself. Maybe the worst will be past by that time.

Also, I know quite a few folks have posted various food recommendations in the area, all great. One of my favorites is the Trempealeau Hotel. Very relaxed dining on the river. You can show up in caching clothes. It’s at the gateway to Perrot Park, and there’s even a virtual right at the hotel.

I don’t know if we’ll be around or not, but pm us and we can share
numbers. We might be around. We were last weekend. We’ve barely been out, but hopefully that will change next week.

We’ve decided to stick with our original plan tomorrow and head over to Waushara County and thereabouts. If the weather tanks, we’ll find a coffee shop or read our books in the car. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve done that.

Hopefully it will come your way soon. It looks like we can maybe get out and mow now. We do have the steamy heat at the moment, but supposedly the next front will move that out, too.

The Omaha trail series near Camp Douglas is a great way to spend a day biking and caching. Not all the caches in the LaCrosse area suck, either. For some good up and down the hill hiking, look at the ones placed in Hixon Forest. Some are easy, some more challenging, but the area is fairly well loaded down. There are some nice park and grabs along the River Road to the north, and on the back roads near Dodge, east of Winona.

Kat is correct that the bike trail here has limited pedestrian access, unlike some on the other side of the state. We’ve placed a few, but I don’t have the desire to place and maintain a big string of them and it doesn’t seem like anyone else around here does, either. We’re having enough trouble with a couple we have there already.

The things in Wildcat Mountain and the Kickapoo Reserve near Ontario are all great hiking caches, but not easy. We’ve done all the stuff in town and most of it is just that….stuff in town. If we didn’t live here, some of it might be stuff we’d pass on doing.

TBC is right, skip that crappy cache just off I-90 in West Salem. I hear the homeowners have a screw loose! 😉

I did get a response from one person, who still has the coin and just hasn’t been out much. To me, that’s good news. I’m with Lisa, probably not releasing any more coins. With the exception of the one just located and one probably in a cache in Alaska, those all have disappeared.

I know, nothing new, but it is still a baffling phenomenon.

Oh, they’ve started here already. And the mayflies. The plows were out to deal with those, ugh!

Pat, Cute one, and it’s true, nothing we can do about the weather….except complain! So I’m exercising that particular right at the moment. I’m not typically a whiner, but sometimes I just feel entitled. This is one such time! 🙄

We’ve done that basement thing twice, it is so not fun. It seems like we’ve finally got that problem licked with better drainpipes and gutters. Actually, now that I think of it, three times. We got hit with the 1994 flooding, too.

I probably know at least one of those caches you mention. It was kind of frightening to see the Kickapoo right at the concrete bed. Only thing keeping it dry was the huge pile up of debris that slammed against the railings there.

Things outside are starting to get that funky smell, too. Rain, rain go away!

Thanks for the catch. There were a couple others with that kind of thing going on, but I caught those.

The bookmark for our challenge will just have Wisconsin caches required. I’m kind of excited to see a couple near Napa on that 2000 list, though. Goof friends live in St. Helena and I want to go visit again. It’s been a few years since my last trip.

Dave, Are some of those not legit? I’ll run it all by you before submitting it, maybe. I have looked at the “founders'” profiles to see what they placed and found from those two years and added them to my bookmark. Figured if someone was lucky enough to find those, they should be able to count toward their total.

Some really great points and concerns raised in this thread all the way around. We do these trails because, as Dave says, you do have to get yourself moving under your own power and it’s a nice change from in the car, out of the car, in the car.

Barry’s comment about the accessibility issue is a great observation as well. We enjoyed the Bugline a bit more ourselves, not quite so busy. Did you get to the part where you could see into the “lakes” in the quarry at Lannon? That was pretty amazing in and of itself.

I also share jenhen’s concern with respect to those more remote trails and the paths and such that quickly get created. If that affects how those groups, like the IAT folks, perceive what we do, we could lose out on some amazing areas for cache placements. When we go somewhere like that, we aren’t really expecting a bunch of caches anyway. Heck, when we did St. Peter’s Dome, which I think was about a 2.5 mile hike one way, we were beyond thrilled to get a Lil Otter and another along the way! Nort’ woods power trail!

My intent wasn’t to try and pit caching styles against each other, I see these trails as a nice way for people to get out of the car and enjoy some activity, although I do agree with PCFrog that every 500 feet can be almost as tiring as just riding. We have learned to do every other one if we’re doing a ride to one end and then back, which helps. As Jim says, kind of hard to pass them up if they’re right there!

We are putting out an old timers’ challenge, which of course won’t help the old timers, cause they probably already have all the possible caches. But it will require folks to have found about half of the currently active number of caches from 2001. If they have some from before that have since been archived, they count, but the number is based on what’s out there now. I’ve been building the bookmark for this, looking at “old timers” profiles to gather up the archived ones from 2000 and 2001. Just have to motivate my butt to hide the darn thing! We thought it would be a fun way to use a special ammo can we won at a 10 years event.

Barry, Actually, we have something like that in mind, just on a state wide scale. Just need to get my butt out to the location where we want to place it.

For those who want the “old time” caches mentioned in the power trail thread, this would be a good place to start.

Brian, That’s not the one I saw (nor can I find it now), but it’s the same idea. I’m sure it’s some sort of html trick and I do know about “view source,” so I suppose I could start with that but my brain is fried from a challenging read for my book club right now!

I wish I could remember where I saw this. An out of state user…if I can remember who it was, I’ll add the link.
